DON'T MAKE THIS MISTAKE! Replacing Supercharger Clutch on the Audi A7

- Hey guys, as you all know I have been driving my 2017 Audi A7 for about 2 months now and have noticed at grinding sound coming out of the engine. After doing some research and having the Audi dealer look into it, the problem was diagnosed to be the supercharger clutch grinding and cause noise every time you have instant acceleration. The part was purchased from the dealer for $400 and I had my independent mechanic scheduled to to have it replaced for an additional cost of $400. After spending about 3 hours removing the supercharger to replace the clutch we realized that The issue didn't go away and that it sounded like it was grinding even louder. Watch till the end to find out wha twas done to fix this issue and not to repeat my same mistake.

You are the only person that has posted a video on this, thanks!
My 2017 Q7 CPO has this problem too. Audi dealer says their technicians couldn't find anything, so I guess I'll wait till it fails (hopefully it breaks while in warranty).
On a side note, do you remember what song was used at 9:30?
I just replaced the SC clutch on my S5. Easier than expected job! The special tool is a VAS 6909 clutch energizing tool which retail around $160, but I made my own for less than a beer! I did ask some garages for quotes, but some said go to the dealer because of the special tool. So I did it myself. Thanks to this video I didn't just go get a new clutch with the hope it would simply bolt on. Thsi video and research made sure I did it correctly!
Hi Dave, I've seen your post on the a5oc as well. Looks like you did an amazing job. What connectors have you used to feed 12v to the clutch?
@davewilliams7565 can i borrow your tool you made to activate the clutch?
Hi Andy, where are you located? 😁
@@davewilliams7565 I am located in Washington State.
i was preparing to do exactly what you do . change the clutch in some local workshop . . now i see the video and i will go directly to dealer. thanks a lot for video , happy to view this video now before i make same mistake. . . . . in my case few days ago i change geabox clutch because i thought my problem is from there . seems that after change gearbox clutch i have same problems .. so now i check better this clutch and i discover i have same noise like you . . not so offen and loud but sometimes i had it. . . so i hope will be replaced good by dealer and also my problem will dissaperar .. .maybe you meet also this kind of issue .. in low rpm when i touch acceleration i receive a small shock before the car starts to go .. but only in low rpm 1200-1400 . hope this replacemet will fix this . because i don't think to something else that could be to have this small shock . . . anyway one more time . thanks for video advice.
This is only on the CREC 3.0tfsi engine. 2016 and older does not have a clutch on the supercharger!
Are you sure all 2016 models don’t have it? I just bought a 2016 A6 and wasn’t sure how to tell if I have that or not
@@SkinnySkinch There are 2015 and 2016 models that have it. You can clearly recognize it by looking at the Supercharger pulley. If the pulley has bolts on it, then you have an supercharger clutch (that might fail as in this video, mine did too after 125.000km). If your pulley doesn’t have bolts on it, you got the older version of the engine, which doesn’t have a clutch which in turn isn’t suspect to this issue. Hope I can help you!
@@danielrippen i have the same problem…i just bought my car with 60k miles and luckily i bought it with a extended warranty so i’m happy. also getting codes for pcv so this looks like a 2 birds one stone job for me
@@SkinnySkinchI think 2014 and older have the supercharger clutch
When I bought my a7 and the dealership owner tell me to buy the lifetime warranties that his place is offering for a Warranty Company. I decided to purchase and 5 years later (I still have the car with 145K Miles) with nearly $30K in replacing and repairs paid by the Warranty Company. THey have tried serveral time to kick me off the warranties but no luck because i keep my services up-to-date. There are serveral services you can have a local certified mechanic to work on your car on interval services (make sure to keep all of the receipts). Any repair that need the Warranty I Bring it to the dealership. To work on this Engine is a pain,
smart
I just found a clutch delete kit for my Q7. Not dealing with this again.
How/when did you realize it was a mistake? How did the car behave after you've replaced the 1st clutch? Any error came back? The car did not have any pull?
Im having my local audi replace this part on mine at the moment. Bummer you had buy a second one and all that but your video helped me feel good about NOT doing myself. Cheers!
Awesome, thanks for watching. Glad you came across my video and was able to learn from my mistake. Let me know who it goes once you get the car back
How much did the Audi dealership charge for this
Did you stop the old one to see what was gone on it? Was it broken or loose?
What about the engagement tool. Does it engage the clutch like it would if you put it into sport? Any reason for them saying it need electronic engagement before starting?
Maybe supercharger oil went out when clutch is lose did u change the supercharger oil
Did you use to get a tapping noise every time you accelerated when driving and it goes away when you let go off accelerater. Im gett this issue at moment on a Q7
Hey there, how many miles do you have on the new clutch now? Mine just failed and is slipping similar to how a clutch would slip in a manual car, I can also see clutch dust all around the housing and it will actually puff out some dust when I rev it. Planning to swap it out soon but I am worried about the longevity of the new one. I am APR dual pulley with a PR of 3.27 and curious how long the new one will last with the high torque gained from running a dual pulley setup...let me know!
It’ll happen again eventually. Just find someone to weld the clutch. Have had mine welded for almost two years.
@@ericklein4319 I’m getting my clutch welded soon. Are u running a custom tune after getting it done? And what other mods do you have
@@ericklein4319 what effects does it have on the car once you weld the clutch?
@@ericklein4319 do i need a custom tune from alr for welded clutch? Does it throw any codes?
i’m not sure if this is still true or not but i heard that integrated engineering was working on a permanent fix to this along with their dual pulley tune for the CREC motor…seen it on the audizine forums a while ago
How much did the dealer charge? I'm getting it replaced under warranty right now. Thanks for the video and information.
he said about $400
but plus labor and stiff, it probably cost more than $2000
Thanks for the tip, hopefully I don’t ever have to change mine. But If I do I will know how.
Glad to help Thanks for watching!
Does that throw an engine code or light?
How much did you pay the dealership to replace and install the clutch
Beautiful Car and Video
ALEBMW_ TM thanks!
Hello i have Audi A7 2016 3.0 tfsi 7speed European version, Last week I had a problème clutch electromagnetic supercharger fault I don’t know what it that and when I push the car, the car give me the EPC (Électronic power controle ) light on the dashboard and I can not push the car i have to drive slowly, and no more power only when I push the throttle it happen.
Need your help bro
Yes, this is what mine did. Accelerate above 5krpm and 1 bar of boost (mine is stage 2) and EPC came on with fault - 'Supercharger clutch stuck open'.
Is there coolant inside that supercharger clutch asm. Pls. Let me know
There's no coolant in any of the supercharger components, except for the intercoolers.
Why should it be replace with that milage?
He explained at the beginning that isn't working properly
It was grinding, Thanks for watching!
