Last summer I spent about two weeks caring for a Troglodytes aedon that fledged from the nest without being able to fly. He spent three days running around the garden, hidding down the logs and being fed by his parents. I kept the cats and dogs away all that time.
First I wanted to put him back in the nest, without a doubt the tiniest and softest animal I've ever held in my hand. But the little guy would get down as soon as I put him there.
Then I started to pick him up and let him jump out of my hand... then he started gliding and flapping. I wanted to see if as a "trainer" I could help him strengthen his wings.
Then he started to run away but now flying low, until it became impossible for me to catch him. Good news!
Then it scurried under a Plumbago Auriculata (a kind of jazmine) and started climbing up the branches until it was high up in the cypresses. From there, he began to fly perfectly.
It was a while before I was sure that he could fly from tree to tree.
    It was a beautiful experience.
And quite an accomplishment for saving him.

I agree that this is definitely the only justification for industrial society. truly heartwarming to see that humans can care for sentient life without needing a transaction of some kind- like it has been for generations- with farm animals and pets. caring for a living creature simply because its the right thing to do seems so difficult for people. i hope your attitude rubs off on more people. i think its the best we could do as a species. thank you for your kindness and never stop!! :)

Thanks, I couldn't agree more. Also, I liked the birds, even if they were a bit angry with you :)

I felt so fortunate when birds (mud swallows) nested on my porch... saw them hatch several broods over several years... loved those birds. Hope that tape holds!

We are all here on earth to help others; what on earth the others are here for I don't know.

Have you read "unto this last " by John Ruskin , written late 1800's . I am sure you'll enjoy it . Philanthropy is needed more desperately than ever.

I feel this. A stewardship of one's stomping grounds can heal the soul. A kind heart and a clue don't often manifest in a single person. Carry on

The industrial revolution and its tape have been okay for little birds, sometimes

maybe now that the tape is there, you could safely add some glue or silicon to the top of the crack for a more permanent fix?

I have a little bird that keeps trying to build a nest on the little ledge above the house door and I have to keep moving it away from the door for about a week before it starts building it away from the doorway lol

I don't think it's the *only* value of industrial society, but it is nice to see some people still think about how to be nice.
And is the industry really to blame for the degradation of public nicety? Maybe I'm just being optimistic, but I don't think it's a prerequisite for the existence of duct tape.
