One word that I've always used to describe James Honeyman-Scott is "tasty", but don't take that to mean "mellow". He was plenty aggressive when he had to be. A great player who didn't need to blaze all over the fretboard to get his points across.
Nothing Chrissie could do, but the sizzle of the original Pretenders was never even approached by the following lineups. There was something interesting in their sound, in their lyrics, their intensity, their whole vibe. Once the members changed the spell was broken and never recaptured.

This must have been a helluva show. Chrissie wasn't known for being happiest person on stage, but here she looks jubilant. I've been an obsessive fan since high school in the 70s and 80s. In fact, I started a Pretenders scrapbook back then, which I still have. I've collected dozens of magazine articles and interviews. It was Chrissie who inspired me to start playing guitar, and Pete Farndon who made me want to play bass. He wasn't known as the best bass player in the world, but I really loved his style; very fluid and sexy. I totally agree! Met the entire band in Colombus Ohio, so cool, and extremely giving! (James Honeyman Scott even told my bff, Sherry that she had a very nice motorcar!) They let us use their hotel rooms that night and put us all on the guest list for Pittsburgh! Two great shows in a row!!! Yeah, great band for sure!

It's so great to see these videos of the original lineup- classic stuff. Those first 2 albums, nothing else like it. Brings back fond memories. Chrissie was a class act in her own raw way.
I saw The Pretenders at a small club in Connecticut called TOAD'S on March 26, 1980. They wanted to play a few nights prior to their NYC debut at the Palladium in May. This girl I worked with (Debbie) was dating their lighting man at the time and told me she could get me in if I could manage a ride to the show for all of us. My friend Mike Carbonaro had a limousine at the time and he agreed to take us there. It was supposed to be just the 3 of us, but Mike brought his friend Christopher and Debbie brought HER friend Chistine, so it ended up being 5. We got there an hour before the doors opened...Debbie got all of us in. We went over to the bar and the only person sitting there was Pete Farndon! Debbie and the light man introduced me to Pete and he shook hands with me. It was very exciting and I was saddended to learn of his death later in 1983. He was very gracious to all of us and didn't have to be, as the band was all the rage at the time. Of course, they did a great set. One of the best shows I've ever seen. Saw them again on May 3, 1980 at the Palladium from 2nd row seats. Another fantastic show. That was a great time for music (1979-80). So many great bands touring and playing small clubs in NYC. Their debut album is one of my all-time favorites!
Hi was the Palladium the 3rd or the 2nd of May as there is a bit of confusion over this date, I have a show that Chrissie mentions James Brown's birthday which is the 3rd of May I've seen that they played Club Detroit Port Chester on the 3rd of May. Do you have any tickets. This one has always been a mystery to me.
@@977Radio When I first started going to concerts, I started keeping a ledger with the date of the show, all the acts on the bill, the venue and where I sat, which was usually within the first ten rows! So, I'm sure that The Pretenders played at the Palladium on Saturday, May 3, 1980, because on May 2, I was at Irving Plaza to see Gang of Four with the Dots. But just to make you happy, I looked at my ticket stub. I've always kept the stubs from all of the more than 300 shows I've been to. My friends used to bribe the ticket takers NOT to rip the ticket, but I never went that far. They'd slip em' $10 to $20 depending on how big the band was (like The Rolling Stones, Yes, or The Who.) My stub is a Ticketron stub of the orange, yellow variety with a white background where the headliner and venue names were printed. It states: Saturday, May 3, 1980 8:00PM. Opening for The Pretenders on May 3 were The Necessaries. They also opened for them at Toad's on March 26, 1980, one of the shows they played out-of-town to get them ready for their big NYC debut. I also saw The Pretender with Nervus Rex at The Ritz on Sept. 23, 1880 and at The Capitol Theatre in Passaic, NJ on Sept. 26, 1980, where The English Beat opened for them. I hope this clears things up for you.
@@977Radio I was looking at your website. Very interesting. I wanted to let you know that from your audio section, The Pretenders did not play Central Park on Aug.9, 1980. Todd Rundgren's Utopia was playing in Central Park at the Wollman Skating Rink on Aug. 9. The Pretenders played there Aug. 30, 1980 with The Sir Douglas Quintet and Doug Sahm. Inside Central Park was this outdoor skating rink that they would turn into a concert venue during The Summer. Tickets were only $1.50 to $2.00 and all seats were General Admission. Todd Rundgren recorded his Another Live album there in 1975.

This live version is so grungingly fierce and raw and amazing. I would have loved to been at this performance, but I was just a snot nosed 11 year old kid at the time.
That original lineup was untouchable. As amazing as those first two albums were, this band really turned it up a few notches live. Love that little, "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting" bit James throws in there towards the end.
Oh god, look at how clean-cut James is! Ooooh, missing him and Peter, wish the world could have known them more... Cheers for posting this beautiful clip, man.
My favorite title (for a personal reason) on their monster first album. That particular rendition was/still is just ferocious. Cream on steroids and other things during the jam. Controlled chaos with max intensity. Punk with some style and chops to go with it. My heart is still beating a little fast.......
Just reading the comments now, but never surprised by how many folks recognize how brilliant this original line up was, both in the studio and live. The fact that the magic lasted for less than three years only adds to their legacy, methinks. Had the good fortune to see them 'up close' in a couple of small venues just after the first album came out. Grateful I am, still, and would put those performances up there with the best of 'em. Have to think this video captures it well. Quite the outfit they were, and quite the talent that Chrissie Hynde still is, at least in my (older now) humble opinion...
I saw them in SF when I was 17, at the Waldorf. They played and looked like this. So. Fekkin. Awesome. Chrissie Hynde is the essence of authentic rock ‘n’ roll, a true artiste completely dedicated to her work. Honeyman-Scott was such a great British Rock Guitar God too. Too bad both he and the bassist died of drug overdoses.
Chrissie did the same in Chicago & talked about it at “The UIC Pavilion”, i do not remember exactly what she said to Honor Iggy opening, was Short & Sweet & Oh so true! Maybe something as Chrissie came on stage similar to “I’m going to kneel down & kiss the spot To Honor where The Great Iggy Pop was just sweeting & very amazing as always.
This is 40 years old...just bout and still fresh tight and real rock n roll. No autotune, and other crap thats used today...Th Pretenders were great at what they did at their time and Chrissie and Martin are still in action! I sincerely hope that in Pete and Jimmys heaven, it will always be, that they will ALWAYS be as they were here. If thats what their dear, departed souls choose, of course. Loved and missed by many fans. Later on live with these four could be iffy, but alas, we all go downhill in our own ways at times. Rest in peace PGF, JHS💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💞
I was blessed and saw the orginal 4 play once in NYC in August and exactly a year later on the beach in Santa Barbara in August both outdoors..... That was all I needed forever💗
Hey Molly, I get what you are saying. I tend not to care for too much f**king around with songs in a live environment; but man, this was amazing!!!!!!!
This is outstanding footage on the audio and cameras, and the lighting is superb on this great song. Looks like Chrissie channels Pat Benatar here, but maybe Pat Benatar channels Chrissie since I think Chrissie hit it big first. Great stage presence from the band. It was never the same in my opinion after the excellent first two albums and the firing of Pete Farndon (subsequent demise too) and demise of James Honeyman-Scott. The jangle guitar of Honeyman-Scott was gone and the coolness of Pete Farndon, in addition to no longer seeming as tight. Maybe the music would've changed anyway, but I think someone pointed out the loss of the original lineup (or at least Honeyman-Scott) likely ended their unique sound. Like two other bands of that era, The Police & The Cars, The Pretenders with this lineup had a very original sound, borrowing some jangle from bands like The Byrds and the odd time signatures of Chrissie Hynde. I think this may have been at the beginning or end of a tour, or perhaps at home in London or something as they really are pumped. Anyway, ended too soon, but at least Chrissie & Martin were able to carry on.
I feel SO fortunate to have seen this lineup JUST as they broke big....Just a handful in the audience at a college gig and then around a month later in the same city, SOLD OUT with a mob outside trying to get in. Incredible band.
It may have been this tour that I MISSED! But I was there that night in Dallas, Tx at a club on NW Hwy near Abrams Rd (which is now called New West!) and my friends and I were going to dance but there was a Concert and I asked and someone said it was THE PRETENDERS…but I didn’t know who they were and the NEXT WEEK I found their First Album and kicked myself for not going! Biggest regret in my LIFE! Still I got to see them several years later at Bronco Bowl, which is gone now. Sheeesh!
If it was the one at the Globe then I was there too. I have a recording of the show on my website www.pretenders.org.uk/listen/pretenders-live-shows-2022/
When Stop Your Sobbing single was released, little did I know this band would bring me so much inspiration and connect me with my past unlike any other band. As if one wasn't enough, there had to have been two tragedies. Thank you for one of the top five best rock n roll albums of all time!! Underestimated but never forgotten.....

she did the same in Dallas! must have been an every night thing!
She introduced Honeyman Scott as Rhythm guitar? Lol. Like she plays lead?!
First time I'm seeing this clip and it's 41 years to the day of this performance.
thought this was 1981
Saw them just before James and Pete passed away. Amazing band, incredible chemistry and kick ass music!!
I was blessed and saw the orginal 4 play once in NYC in August and exactly a year later on the beach in Santa Barbara in August both outdoors.....
That was all I needed forever💗
My favorite Pretenders song of all time.
Mine too and this live version is such an amazing find!
NigelDoes ....yup. 🤗😁😉memories of summer of 1983.
Watch Pete, Holy Shit.
I love how Jimmy looks at Martin at 2:04. After he plays a particularly cool fill. Like, "that's the spirit! We're playing man!"
This made my day! Thanks for sharing
the first two Pretenders albums ....ahhh
Awesome version of this song. The first album was classic. Saw this line-up in Santa Barbara way back in the day.
So In the pocket and great synergy. This is a tremendous video, thanks.
wow! The most amazingly beautiful trainwreck. I mean in a good way..especially the zen moment where they pull out of it near the end. super cool!
The ending is a musical orgasm.
Brilliant evocative words 💖🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸
What a monster band.
GDamn, what Rock n Roll band!!!
James Honeyman Scott on "rhythm guitars" ?
This is what concert rock and roll is all about! Yaeh!
I feel SO fortunate to have seen this lineup JUST as they broke big....Just a handful in the audience at a college gig and then around a month later in the same city, SOLD OUT with a mob outside trying to get in. Incredible band.
What a voice!
Happy Birthday Chrissie! This is my favorite Pretenders!!!✌️💙🎶
Sheeesh!
This album was magic! Their newest album "Hate for sale" is the closest album to their first that I've heard. Liking it more n more!
Her voice.
Still one of the best songs of all time
Excellent to this day. Did she say Rythm? Just having fun but sure wish he was still around. One of my favorites still. Thanks for the video.
Yeah, it sounded like she said "James Honeymann-Scott on rhythm guitar" which was unexpected.
High Energy Performance. 😊
What a band they were ❤
I feel so blessed to have gotten to see Pete and Jimmy several times. This brings back some great memories. Thanks.
So glad this recording exists, luv it! :)
A Bomb Rock Band !
Thanks for posting this!! Another great example of let’s get torqued and jam…

She rocks the socks. Love her.

Awesome that is ALL
Luv you 💓 💗 💛 😘 💖 💕 💓 💗 💛

When I thought that after my till then favourite bands THE WHO, NAZARETH, HOT TUNA and ALLMAN BROTHERS nothing much great could come.. along came THE PRETENDERS! They kick some MASSIVE ASS!
