    I just discovered big stitch quilting and binding a few months ago. It was a godsend for me because I have severe arthritis in both of my hands. I mostly machine quilt but for special people I like to add a bit of hand stitching and the big stitch binding is nice. I used to finish the binding by machine but I don’t like how the machine stitches show through to the other side. Now I add the binding to the back of the quilt and finish it with big stitches on the front of the quilt

    Really great video. I've been wanting to add big stitch quilting to a few of my small quilt projects, and wasn't certain if I wanted to use embroidery floss or crochet thread, etc. Good idea on the sharpie marks on your thumb, too. Now i feel more confident to try it. I have done regular thread hand quilting before, so this will be a fun variation.

    This is really beautiful and I like that added touch to make it even prettier. What fabric line was the quilt made from again? It is so pretty and I love pink. I am going to try this on my next quilt project but I would like to practice first to get a "feel" for the stitch length. I will try it on a pillow block first. Would you recommend a first attempt at this to use a thicker batting or just use my regular go to? I normally use 80/20 blend in my quilts and save my left over batting from the quilts so I usually have pieces large enough for pillows or runners. This was a fantastic video and I love that you took the time to go slow and show precisely how you did your handwork throughout the tutorial. Very much appreciated. I have never seen this done so it was great to learn. Thanks for the video.

    • @jessica_dayon
      @jessica_dayon  Год назад +1

      This wasn't from a fabric line. I used pinks from my scraps and stash. Some battings are easier to quilt through than others but you can quilt through any of them. My favorite is wool because it is so light and fluffy. But, in this video, I am using a 100% cotton batting. I think you can definitely use your 80/20 scraps. Thanks!

  • @themirrorimagestitcher
    @themirrorimagestitcher Год назад +1

    I understand that you bury the knot in the batting when stopping and starting but for the regular stitches, do you go through all the way to the back? If I go to your IG could you post a picture of what it’s like on the back? Thanks so much for this tutorial. 🙋‍♀️🇨🇦

I did a google search and found that this place carries them. I have never purchased from here though. redrockthreads.com/search?q=foxglove+utility&options%5Bprefix%5D=last

    A few questions about Big Stitch Quilting -
    *If we can’t locate Perle (Pearl) #8 cotton in the colors needed, what are some other substitutes? Only one store in my area carries it and the selection is scarce.
    Would Crochet Thread #10 work?
    Also, I have a baby quilted pieced top that I want to add Minky as backing using the turn inside out method with top stitch along edge with my domestic machine. I was told that poly thread was best for Minky. I would love to add big stitching once done to add special touches and to secure the layers in various places throughout. Is this even possible and with which product?
    Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated.
    I know it’s a lot.

    • @jessica_dayon
      @jessica_dayon  Год назад +1

      For me, I would order the Perle Cotton #8 instead of using a substitute. I just know I like it and I would be happiest using it. You can order online from DMC.
      I have quilted minky with both cotton thread and polyester. On my domestic, I always used cotton thread with minky (because I always use cotton thread on my domestic while I'm quilting). I only started using polyester sometimes on my long arm but not because I'm using minky, just because I'm trying polyester thread. That's the long way to say, you don't need to use polyester thread with minky. You can definitely add big stitch to it and I'd still use Perle Cotton #8

    Hi Jessica, can this stitch be done before quilting the quilt? I am currently doing the quilt along and would like to make the quilt bigger, do you have any suggestions? Say 88 x 92.

    • @jessica_dayon
      @jessica_dayon  Год назад +2

      If you are doing it for decorative purposes, I would do it after the quilting. Otherwise the quilting stitches would be on top of it which may not look as pretty.
      Yes, I played around with the borders to make it 88 1/2" x 92 1/2". (The fabric requirements will not be as listed in the patter though. Also the blocks and center layout stay exactly the same as in the pattern.) You would make the right and left inner borders both 3 1/2" x 72 1/2" and the top and bottom inner borders both 4 1/2" x 78 1/2". Then, make the right and left outer borders both 5 1/2" x80 1/2" and the top and bottom outer borders both 6 1/2" x 88 1/2".
