    best instruction of the year for me, many thanks, coach ! been struggling with racket drop for the past 9 months : my best serve always comes with "unconscious" racket drop (before) ; but since I was instructed to have a "deep " racket drop , my serves started getting worse and worse the past 9 months , since I have to make a conscious / intended push down racket head, the most push down , the awkward my serve flow , the worse and worse result ;

      Yes.. you can’t CHASE the racket drop.., it will come to you when you stop going after it :)
      Great coaching by John!

    Another great video. I can just start to feel my serve begin to look and feel a bit more ‘professional’ due to watching and practising these drills. It’s not easy but these videos are so much help.

    Very very good one. No need for a deep drop, no need to force, no need to do anything except using the right grip, the whole body in a relax way and the drop will occur by itself. Like the racquet lag for the forehand.

    Many thanks John! Your video is so timely for me it’s as if you’ve been watching my serving practices recently ;-) I get stuck moving on from the trophy position because I’ve been trying to feel a racket drop. Then I end up leading with my arm to hit the ball by which time it’s dropped too low. Thanks for explaining the correct sequence of movements - I am going to try leading with my body and shoulder first from the trophy position and stop thinking about my arm and racket. Hopefully they will swing up naturally to make contact with the ball at a higher point.

    Thank you, John! This video is incredibly helpful in addressing the serve issues I’m currently working on. I love your instruction that the racket drop should neither be forced nor too deep. Coming out of the trophy position, do you think it is accurate to say that the racket drop is largely produced by the inertia of the racket head as the shoulders rotate into the swing? Also, thanks to this video, I believe I’m experiencing a lighter sensation during the racket drop where my hand and racket head feel like they are “switching position.” By taking note of my hand position in the trophy position, it feels like the ideal depth of the racket drop brings the racket head to just below where my hand WAS in the trophy position. I’m thinking that the often perceived “deep racquet drop“ might be a bit of an illusion because by the time the racket has dropped, the shoulder has rotated substantially forward. Do you think these observations are accurate and/or advisable?

      Hi, Thanks so much for the kind comments and great questions. The racquet drop is triggered by shoulder rotation, which originates in the legs and also somewhere else :-)...something NOBODY talks about, but it is a BIG, BIG part of the overall movement. I like the sensation of the racquet and hand switching position...that is a great image! I would have to look at your serve to make further recommendations regarding the length/ depth of the racquet drop. I agree the racquet can't drop as low once you have rotated the shoulders. It also depends on your individual mobility. I hope this is all helpful to you. If you would like a complete review of your serve, this is a possible option for you: performanceplustennis.com/serve-video-analysis-description/. Best, John

    Any suggestions to have pronation at contact? My serve now is mostly side spin as very little pronation is happening. Thanks 🙏👍

      Hi Jason, You can check out my playlist for pronation lessons. Also, my featured lesson "Every Serve Needs This" also features drills for developing pronation. Take a look and let me know. We can also arrange to send in a video for me to review....best, John

    Hi John, my biggest issue is making the simultaneous leg bend and leg drive with the pronation - i seem to always be too early with the leg drive/bend or off balance and disconnected with my ball toss - is anything i can do outside of lots of repetition ? when i take the leg drive and bend out of the equation my serve is much better. Is that a common issue for rec players ? It seems at least for me is very difficult to achieve.
