I don't think I would go to this extent but as its a project car you're planning on keeping I 100% understand! I had a 106 Quiksilver that needed some rust replacing on the front wheel cavity leading through to the engine bay, we cut it out and patched it up. It wasn't pretty but got the job done
Have a Mk1 Audi TT that I’m building for a track car but I also want to keep it forever so I have taken it all apart to find any rust and fully re protect the underside. Because rust is a bastard!
Could not thank you enough! Im in a process of reassembling one Mk3 to put it back to road as well and the details in your video helped a lot. These are really, REALLY good cars made with common sense and some solid engineering, that cannot be said about later models.
Ive basically just done this to my Nissan 200sx S14. Its a pain in the ass, but ive managed to find 14 rust holes. Ive welded 8 of them so far, only 6 more to go. One of them is the left sill (the same as you). Luckily im decent at welding etc, so im gonna fix it this upcoming week :) Im really excited about getting the car fixed up for the summer ;) Glad you did this to the golf, since its the best "reassurance" you can do for yourself and your car. Loving the progress! Keep it up!
Just got myself a little MK3 too. Mine definitely has rust! But watching you disassemble your car is very encouraging. Hopefully by following your example, I may be able to successfully tackle my rust issues. Thanks for the great video!
For rust problems, the best solution and the one that works best if you know how to do it is to cut the part damaged by rust and weld a piece of sheet metal of the same quality and thickness and then polish until the weld points are covered. Apart from this method you also prevent the rust from continuing to advance.
Well, it seems like a was not far off with my estimation. I would do the new arches, front fenders, new sill covers and some tidy up patches on the floor pan and roof all at ones. I would tackle this all slowly in the spring/summer piece by piece yourself. It makes no sense to spend the 900 pounds on a body shop just for the sills. Save some money and buy a MIG welder, gas, wire, pliers, mask, gloves, angle grinder and practice, practice, practice. It's one of the most useful DIY skills you will ever learn as I said earlier. It's gonna pay back itself immediately and creates amazing content! Also, that way your can easily decide what your plans are with the cosmetics. Full (DIY) paint job, just a paint correction (fenders, sills, roof), complete plasti dip or wrap?
I’m most definitely looking into welding, I’ll have to do a lot of learning and I’ll be needing a lot of advice from everyone but I can give it a go 😂 There’s no point spending crazy amounts on the car to be fair!
I super appreciate you filming all the dismantling! My MK3's tail light seals have been leaking so I'm going to do a big check of the back materials when I do the fix. This was helpful in seeing what I'm in for!
Watching these videos with interest. My Mum's first car was a white 1992 K Reg VW Golf just like this. It was very rusty and the ECU/Computer died at 90'000 miles. Things kept falling off it much to the amusement of the local garage we used. Hopefully you can fix this car and keep it on the road.

Cool video. i modificate mine MK3 Golf. the rust happend because MK3 golf where from fabric badly treated against rust compared to MK2 OR mk4 Golf. But MK3 are very reliable. I removed all rust and strenghten the point where a krik is needed eigen lifting the car
I just need to do some sound deadening. Subwoofer is making the boot rattle and now the speaker sounds weird but that might be due to the amount of vibrations mixing with the rattle of the boot
I had a 1 owner mk3 gsx 1.8i mp9, car had no rust except for by the fenders at the sill you could build a house with all thee sand😄keep it up love the vids
Got a hole in that exact spot on my front arch just below the strut tower, water gets in behind the seam sealer and rots it out from the inside. Common problem
This one isn't that bad, mine was way worse. You can check it on my page if you want, but prepare for the worst.. Some spots look as surface rust but as soon you'll bring the angle grinder with a brush you'll be suprised. Good luck treating the rust👌
Very interesting vid. Not many of these left and most base models have been scrapped since they are now at that age where they need rust repairs. I have a 1994 base model mk3 golf that is currently in for new inner/outer sills, floor pan and chassis legs. Expensive but I can’t let it die it’s properly under my skin
Yes most certainly luke,I have done so myself.... Piece of mind...then if you want later on is know it's all clean and solid is sound deading her😉 Top work👍 bloody clean before you clean lovely in white
My mk3 gti suspension turret was rusted away in the same spot you is but I had a hole the size of a tennis ball so unfortunately had to scrap it it wasnt so bad it was connected to the car anymore
For a car like this to have parts with rust, it had to be exposed to absolute abandonment since it is a car with the best quality of sheet metal on the market.
Hmmm. I would say it's touch and go if it's worth it tbh. The front turret rust looks pretty bad. If you can do it yourself as a learning welding project then great but I certainly wouldn't go throwing loads of cash at it. Good luck though. 👍
My thoughts entirely, whether I’ll go through the effort to restore it to pristine condition... I think it’ll be unlikely, still can enjoy it in the mean time! 🤙🏻
Yes, sills, floor and tailgate on mine. Arguably one of VW's worst cars, I seem to recall they were using some poor quality steel in this era. Mine was put out of its misery in a RTC. bought an '06 Focus - much better drive IMHO!
QOTW - Would you go this far to find rust on your own car?

After your video, I have to go this far with my MK3 I guess..
Great job ^^
I don't need to do that, because i have checked everything six months ago and btw,i live in mediterian climate so no salt
Have a Mk1 Audi TT that I’m building for a track car but I also want to keep it forever so I have taken it all apart to find any rust and fully re protect the underside. Because rust is a bastard!
If I was checking over a car I was planning on keeping for a long time, yes

I can only wish my mk3 is only this rusty..

Good video! The minor rust has probably been there for years so I wouldn't worry about it suddenly becoming worse in the near future
Yeah that rust can stay put for now, makes the car lighter anyway 😂
Thank you very much for sharing Your content. I will be cleaning my VW Jetta (Vento) CLX today. Cant wait to start.
How's the project going?
5:24 I believe someone wants in... 😁
the quality of ur vids has got really good 👌 also do you own any other hoodies haha
Thanks dude! I own about 10 hoodies, just stick with what’s comfy 😂

I will make a same with my 1996 mk3 in a next month, almost all rust in the same places like in yours... Greetings from Ukraine.
Definitely worth checking for rust before it becomes a major issue!
Thanks for watching 🔥🤙🏻
Dam this comment aged well.
I just need to do some sound deadening. Subwoofer is making the boot rattle and now the speaker sounds weird but that might be due to the amount of vibrations mixing with the rattle of the boot
I need to do loads of sound deadening too, the mk3 sounds like a tin can otherwise 🤣
@@LukeBudd 🤣🤣🤣 i just to find the best one. Like a bang for your buck. A good cheap one
How much do you think it would cost to put new floor panels in
You can remove those drain bungs fine mate just pop them out👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks mate! I thought they must do 👍

Been waiting for this Sunday vid 🤙🏼
Thanks for watching!! 👍🏻

Yeah I’ve seen this problem on mk3s before, unavoidable really 😂

Exactly it’s all about piece of mind knowing it won’t snap in half!
My mk3 gti suspension turret was rusted away in the same spot you is but I had a hole the size of a tennis ball so unfortunately had to scrap it it wasnt so bad it was connected to the car anymore
That’s sad to hear dude! 😢
Hopefully mine won’t reach the same fate!
@@LukeBudd hopefully not need to save the mk3,s
Cool vid. I would use this car as a test bed and get yourself a welder and get practising on this car.
It's a brilliant tool and skill to have.
Could be quite entertaining learning to weld and as you said a great test bed for it! 🤙🏻
Well done mate, good video and yes I would take my car apart to find the rust and fix it properly. All simple fixes in your case so just plough on
My mk3 Golf also had a lot of rust in the floor, but I have a video where I fix it.
this to me is a bit ott . im doing up a 1303 vw beetle classic and so much easier to strip less to take out . good video
I didn’t quite realise how much stuff there was until I took it out 😂
Nice video, hope you can tackle it all and make it a fun little project car without having to worry about it rusting away 😁
Thanks! I hope so too, fun little project either way ☺️
@@LukeBudd exactly! I can't wait to see what you're gonna do with it in the future and maybe get some inspiration for mine too 😋

Great video luke 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks mate! 🤙🏻
Well having in mind the car’s age. It is in very good condition.
Exactly, the car is getting old now!
This is the British version, right? It has a right-hand drive
Hmmm. I would say it's touch and go if it's worth it tbh. The front turret rust looks pretty bad. If you can do it yourself as a learning welding project then great but I certainly wouldn't go throwing loads of cash at it. Good luck though. 👍

@@LukeBudd All depends when the mot is due? As the sills look structural to me. Unless you can use a welding kit it will be v expensive fix.
mine has no rust in 2023
I had a 2 door version same colour was an amazing car tin worm sadly claimed her 😓😓

You are so close to 10k subscribers
Slowly climbing my way there! 😂
Mate. Never ever work on a car supported by a jack alone. I’ve seen a jack drop and it’s a blink of an eye.
Answering your question i wouldnt no every car of age is always goin to have surface rust
True, I certainly wouldn’t do this with the beemer 😂
Black headliner time
Yeah man! 🔥
The cars made in Germany are the best in quality in the entire mechanical sheet unit. The Germans are rigorous in everything with their products.
