I have tried Lothur “Calm” and it is fantastic. I absolutely love it. It is easy to lather, has great slickness, and has a very long lasting post-shave. My face feels like glass after shaving with Lothur. I measure 1/16 tsp of soap and add 1/2 tablespoon of distilled water. I then turn it into a slurry using my finger. With a slightly damp brush, I turn the slurry into an incredible lather with lots of density and sheen.
Appreciate the honesty and the list. Like the clear layout. Already watched Latherhogs. Love to see these! This is what we do anyway in our heads - constant comparisons.
Nice Jack… your top choices are spot on with mine … couldn’t agree more! I would really love for you to try Shannons Soaps Chupacabra base though. It is fantastic IMO
Very interesting and good concept for a video, although I wish I could see the image zoomed in and showing the specific base (I know you mentioned for some/many) for the company logos I don't recognize.
I love that you ranked Oaken Lab so highly; I would agree. I think it's the best soap base that nobody talks about. Truly phenomenal lather, and it's tops in every metric for me. Also pleased to see MacDuffs, First Line Shave, and Noble Otter ranked so highly. Those three also perform extremely well for me.
Looks pretty accurate to me although I have not tried any S-tier soaps yet. I will be ordering some Lothur Grooming and A&E (K2e) when I run down my current soap base (Highland Springs - vegan).
I've only used the newest base for house of mammoth, but its one I would put in the top tier along with zingari man. Wholly kaw siero base has been my favorite of all bases, but I haven't tried the one you said is your absolutefavorite and now I feel the urge to buy it, everything else I have tried. Only a few I would actually swap around. Pretty solid judgment in my opinion. As I agree with majority of your list and ranking.
Very solid list! We all have our own preferences, but for me, (in my own limited experience)Tusk, Omnibus and Shannon’s Chupacabra base are tops. Milksteak, Siero, Sego and Kairos are in the next tier, followed by Noble Otter and Stirling. Im interested in trying out more massed produced soaps at the moment. I’d love to try Arko, Tabac, Cella and Proraso.
I think 345 should be higher. Shannon’s is definitely top tier imo but I understand you leaving them out based on not as much use/experience with them. I’d put Stirling and Caties Bubbles up a level especially if talking about CB’s cream soap. I would have B&M a level lower. Just my thoughts. Thanks for the video.
I think most reviewers have liked the new Fine soaps but I see both you and Jon at Latherhog have them lower in your ranking, which surprised me. Fun chart to review; thanks for sharing.
Great list indeed. I rank Tabac the highest of any soap, mass produced or artisinal. But at the end of the day mass produced or artisinal, most give me the exact same shave considering all elements wet Shaving. That's just me. Cheers Jack 🍻
Very cool to see the brands laid out like this. I’ve actually had great success with SV 4.3 Beta formula. But I’ve found it really does differ on specific line in 4.3. For me desert vetiver in 4.3 is great. Slick as black ice. I actually don’t find the Zingari Man’s Sego base as slick as that SV desert vetiver 4.3 beta; BUT thats really splitting hairs and when cost is considered; Zingari wins overall. Just picked up Noble Otter fireman, House of Mammoth Damocles and Wholly Kaw’s masquerade in the seiro base. Interested to see how they shape up. Smelt Damocles and instantly loved the scent. Definitely a unique one there. Cheers from Canada.
@@T-R.e.x ordered some samples of black wood and the traditionalist with a big sample order from Maggards. Will be able to test that out after my face heals from some folliculitis/inflammation. I have discovered Astra SP’s are HELL NO blade for me! 🙅♂️🙅♂️🙅♂️
In general I agree. Would rank SV a little higher and Wholly Kaw much lower. I don’t think I’ll try another Wholly Kaw product. In my experience his base has a bad smell, takes a ton of soap to get reasonable lather and is crazy expensive. I know hope you feel about Soft Heart but I disagree. I still enjoy it more than Excelsior and Omnibus.
Not a criticism, just a question, Jack. Why are you factoring age of base into your rubric so heavily? Personally I would be tempted to think that if it is good, it's just good, regardless of how recently it was updated. Great video with some interesting choices. 🍻 Cheers
@@TheVirtualGroomroom so it's not actually the age of the base, but the qualities the base is able to have due to more modern ingredients and processes?
Awesome List 🤙🏼it’s pretty much what I got and would Choose.. Now saponificio Varesino Arctica Thundra amazing soap and performer haven’t tried rest but this is #1 for me.. I haven’t tried Castle Forbes what do you think on it?? Scent performance compare to Dr. Harris, TOBS and Truefitt & Hill.. If I may Suggest one soap maker from Spain Highly for you try is by Los Jambones by Josserra you’ll love it 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼I got Altamira, Black Rose, and Rodrigo De Jerez amazing scents and linger quite long..if your interested to try let me know I can send you Samples all on me Jack. Great video Thank you for your time doing it so. Alan H
I pretty much agree with your evaluations except two. “The Fat” is better than the credit you give them, “C” really? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ . And Zingari Man, especially the vegan base would be high on my “S” list especially the unscented flavor. One recommendation would be HC&C, that unscented base is pretty damned good, “A” level at least. 😊
Agree with your list. Sterling Soap is so overrated. Dries so fast on the skin like bath soap, and the slickness evaporates quickly. Poraso is just trash. People worship Poraso like some ancient God, but it's terrible. Sorry, had to get that off my chest
Wholly Kaw scents are awful. Their soap base might be good but what's the point of shaving with a product that smells like a tropical drink. I was gifted one of their soaps and immediately gave it away.

Have you tried MacDuffs v4? Unreal

I rank Fine's new soap as D. Not even average for a ten dollar soap, nevermind a $24 soap.
Stoked to see Purely Skinful on the list! 🤘🏻

Don't really have enough use to grade them.

Thanks for including me in your tier listing, Jack! It’s really cool to be included with some of those great artisans.

Good question. I think soap making has developed over time when it comes to artisanal bases. They're doing things now that they weren't in 2015.

SV 3rd tier? 😳
It's good, but it's not as good as the soaps on that list for me - I find the post to be a bit drying.

Ethos is B Tier for me. Even their new F base. Totally overrated and promoted on DFS. Too much. A Tier is Omnibus and Eufros as well.
Saw this list on the other YT channel and not impressed it was ripped off from you.

Completely agree that Proraso is overrated. Hate the plastic container too.
Proraso sucks. Sterling is good if you build it right.
Agree with you on both points @Goliath .. what would be your top 2 performing soap bases?
@Faed Surji Phoenix Artisan Accoutrements CK-6 shaving soaps, and the shaving creams from Supply and Oneblade. My personal favorites.
Wholly Kaw scents are awful. Their soap base might be good but what's the point of shaving with a product that smells like a tropical drink. I was gifted one of their soaps and immediately gave it away.
