A directly connected capacitor bank will immediately bring an over unity power factor to the DG which will trigger it to self-destruct by losing the voltage specially in unloaded conditions.. It is more preferred for a DG to have a lagging pf for a more reliable operation…typically around 0.8 pf for a more reliable operation… A DG being a limited capacity power source, any planned power factor corrections is switch on and off together with the load.... DG set output is often distorted and full of harmonics. These can cause harm to capacitors.DG set cannot take even light capacitive load, if this happens by chance.Load on DG can vary quite frequently, and capacitor bank cannot control it on continuous basis.Usually DG sers themselves are quite small in capacity, and capacitor bank is of not much use.

With lesser power factor say 60% Load Power factor = 0.6
DG rating in kVA = 1000 Load in kW = 500 Load kVA is required = 500/0.6 = 833.33
% of DG utilization = 83.33 With improved power factor using APFC say 85% Load Power factor = 0.9 DG rating in kVA = 1000 Load in kW = 500 Load kVA is = 500/0.9 = 555.56 % of DG utilization = 55.55 From the above it is clear that when power factor is improved the DG utilization for defined load say 500 kW is less and the burden on DG is reduced compared to the unimproved power factor. So isn't that good to connect APFC and maintain PF close to 90 to 95%? Can you pls explain what would be case if we connect a load of 750 kW with 0.6 PF, will the DG supply load current? Also one small suggestion instead of using 'KVA' pls use 'kVA'.

In DG sets, role of AVR is to maintain voltage of tha alternator. Now how it maintains Voltage of Alternator??... By varying DC Excitation Voltage and current of the Excitation windings of an alternator.....But, by varying the voltage of excitation field windings, Power factor also changes...This means role of AVR is not only to maintain Voltage, but Power factor also.. Now, what will happen if we Connect power factor improvement devices??.. There will be ambiguity between AVR and APFC..
