Diesel cars were always high mileage working cars. In the 90s school run mum was encouraged to buy one. As far as I can see diesels are now being bought by people who need a workhorse like me. I do 30k miles a year as a freelance musician.

Fan of the channel - keep up the good work.
I run a 2005 Civic 1.7cdti, it currently has 147k miles on the clock, has always been fully serviced and well looked after. Just had its 14th MOT and needed some minor exhaust work, which was done, completely fault free after that work, with no advisories.
Realistically it gets about 52-57MPG dependent on the type of driving, the computer mpg is always optimistic by a good 7% so I calculate it via the amount of fuel I put in the tank between fill ups.
I don't particularly enjoy diesel cars but as a workhorse they can't be faulted in all honesty. By running it as my daily it allows me to save money towards a whopping V8 petrol in the near future.

I'm in the US and just spent 4 months looking for a high MPG diesel, wound up with an F-Pace 20d which recently got 37 mpg (US) at 90mph on a 600 mile trip. With the distances here in the Western US, a diesel makes sense, even if it is more expensive than premium.
I also have an EV, which is great around town, but not so much when you are in the bush.... I considered the new Kia Sportage hybrid, but its not that much better highway mileage than the F-Pace and, new, it was 50% more.... I think it's more the cost of living that will slow used sales and diesels being the " devil" at the moment will slow first . Seen quite a few big reductions at the big supermarkets " the car people" being one which relies on low margin but high turnover , shows it's slowing generally as people are holding onto what they have longer.

It's commonly said that the reason diesel is more expensive than petrol is because when petrol is extracted from the oil, the left over products get used to make other products, generating further revenue. With diesel these other products wouldn't be made so the revenue needs to be subsided.

Dpf's and egr started to kill diesels...yes there fitted to reduce emissions and yet they increase fuel consumption causing more emissions...then there is the diesel gate scandal and now the cost of diesel vs petrol...EV's don't solve anything but just move the problems to a more localised area (power stations etc) if a diesel is used correctly ie mostly motorway journeys they will return high 60 mpg if not more. Diesel engines do more mpg because there is more carbon per litre of fuel to burn (it is denser). Theoretically the CO2 emissions and amount burnt despite revs (same amount of work) should be the same. It is not of course, but that is due to other reasons, a major one being that diesels burn their fuel better than petrol, and are thereby more efficient.

I have a 2010 Mazda 6 2.2 diesel sport, which I really like, but it has a problem. Now, in the past I have always done my own maintenance and repairs but I now have health problems and am full time carer for my mum so I struggle to do anything beyond an air filter and oil change. What bought me to my current problem was a cam chain change by a local garage, the cam chain itself is ok but the engine has now developed an oil leak. The garage that did the job has closed down, so no joy there. I took it to another place to have the oil leak sorted and they have turned out to be a bad joke. After 5 attempts it still leaks, I asked for a refund so I could take it somewhere else but the owner refused and became abusive, so thats now a court case. Thing is, I really need to sort this leak as it's making a mess of the engine and my driveway. I'm in Redditch, west mids, is there any kind soul who is local that could help me out? I have a large, flat, tarmac drive, so it's not too bad to work on. One of my health problems is severe back pain, so I physically cannot work on the car for very long, even from above, before it becomes intolerable.

I thought it was a steal; 0 tax, 65mpg real world, so I asked why it was so cheap and was told that people don't want diesel. New, that does make sense I guess, they are more expensive, there's a lot these days to go wrong and after the scandal people have been moving away. I had a Leon 1.4 TSI and considered buying a diesel as I do around 20k miles a year. The car averaged about 40mpg around town, and about 48 on a run. However, a good deal on a Audi A3 1.0 TFSI came up, and I bought it as it only had 10hp less than the Leon.
I expected similar fuel economy - how wrong I was. Around town, the Audi averages 53-55mpg. On a run, it’s 65 mpg (without trying, and I have a heavy ish right foot). On the way back from the Lake District, I managed to achieve 80 mpg.
This morning I was stuck in awful traffic on a dual carriageway for 50 mins, 1/2 of the journey being stop start and the other 1/2 accelerating up to 80 ish then back to 30 etc, and I got home still managing to achieve 58 mpg.
Whilst i’m not knocking diesel, I still believe that some modern turbo petrols can achieve diesel like economy.

Diesel is 10p per litre more than petrol, but I get easily 15 miles of motoring on a gallon of fuel vs a petrol variant. It is still a no brainer and my car tax is £30.
Should diesel car prices fall, that is brilliant news for me, because when this car reaches end of the road, I will be buying diesel again. I don't venture into cities, so any diesel ban territories won't hinder me.

Try this in most decent sized petrol SUV's ! I have to say though that I was impressed how economical a new BMW 320i was on petrol. Honestly if diesels are only worth if if you're driving tens of thousands of miles on the motorway every year then I think that's ideal. Value of diesel cars will drop so if you really need one then you're better off. If you were driving a diesel around town and you're being hammered by ULEZ and fuel prices then you'll have to move to a vehicle that's more suited to your needs, inconvenient but better for you and the people around you.
Personally I've started cycling any trips that are under 5 miles, I ride a motorbike into town when I'm commuting or doing day to day business and I use my (old knackered) car for motorway trips or when the weather is horrific. A lot of people would be better off if they didn't treat cars like mobility scooters and started getting about under their own power whenever possible.

I think modern diesels have so much to offer. My Passat will comfortably do 55mpg and over 800 miles to a tank. So even with the additional cost of buying diesel, i still get a huge saving over a petrol. Newer diesels aren't the filthy, polluting cars they used to be. Sadly, now the goverment are putting additional taxes and ULEZ charges on diesels, that will almost certainly kill them off.

Diesel will last for a very long time yet as batteries will not solve the need for diesel in HGVs, trains and ships (and small boats).
I like turbo diesels for the way they drive and eventhough I am not a high mileage driver I accept the higher maintenance costs, but modern petrol cars are becoming turbos now and they also have increased service intervals. Where I live diesel is almost the same price as petrol.
As for governments penalising diesel cars for being dirty - this is no longer true due to DPFs, EGRs and lower compression ratios (Mazda diesels are 14.8:1) and thus reduce NOX and they produce less CO2 anyway.
