    I wonder if this film was ever intended to launch a series of "film adaptations" of the story. You have to think that hypothetically this could have birthed 10+ annual films that, piece by piece, retold all of the biggest and best highlights of the entire series but with Film-level animation. Finding ways to condense, combine and retell the most crucial arcs where possible.
    Remember, at this point Pilaf and co never returned. So combining the "first hunt for the Dragon Balls" with the next major adversary like the Red Ribbon army made a lot of sense, as the Red Ribbon Army is crucial for future events.
    The next film might surely have been an "All about the tournament" movie where we would have been introduced to Krillin, Tien, etc
    Or it might have even had the tournament be "crashed" by the arrival of King Piccolo, and make the final half or 2/3rds of that movie a retelling of the King Piccolo arc.
    Then the 3rd film, to complete a Dragon Ball "trilogy" would easily have been about Piccolo Jr and winning the tournament.
    In "film world" I could see Raditz not existing at all, and having 1 film dedicated to the Saiyan arc. Goku's death could come at the hands of Vegeta.
    Then you have Goku and Piccolo going to King Kai's world together, learning and training together(Goku could just excel far beyond Piccolo) while the ENTIRE gang goes to Namek, including Gohan, Krilling, Bulma, Yamcha, Tien, etc
    So then the Namek and Frieza arcs/sections become a sort of two-part "cliffhanger ending" type of film.
    So now you have had 3 films for original Dragon Ball, and 3 films for the Saiyan-Namek-Frieza arc. Then you do another sort of "two part" film arc for the Androids and Cell Arc. Perhaps even a unique version with no time travel or future trunks. Then another "two film arc" for the Buu Saga.
    Then you would have a nice even 10 films that would tell the sort of condensed and streamlined version of the entire Dragon Ball Manga.
    It COULD have been pretty darn cool, something to initiate new fans into the mythos and to really shake out all of the fat of the story and tell the whole thing in a really cinematic, streamlined way.

    Not only Bluma's hair, but did you notice how Puar's paws were colored?
    Another thing that feels odd about this movie is being an adventure story that doesn't enter a single town with civilians to save. It's all wild expanses and Red Ribbon strongholds!

    It’s a very minor thing, but regarding the poll at 20:08, it’s been shown that social media polls like that give much more accurate results if there’s an “I haven’t seen both” option. Path to Ultimate Strength is a movie with a lot more audience knowledge, since it was the last Dragonball movie for many years. It’s likely a lot of people voted for Path to Ultimate Strength simply because it’s the one they knew more about.
    An “I haven’t seen them both” option would filter out the people who are only voting based on half (or about half) of the information available to them

    Interesting how this is a movie covering OG DB material, created as a mean of celebrating for the anime's 10th anniversary and it has many trappings of GT surrounding considering the latter had premiered a few weeks earlier.
    The biggest one is when Goku goes from his classic gi to the GT version pink wristbands and all. It's like GT within the framework of OG DB. They even used the opening theme Dan Dan Kokoro Hikarteku as the ending song of the film. Plus of course you had GT's composer Akhito Tokunaga doing the score, so yet another connection.

    • @creategreatness8823

      It was like they wanted to reboot the series with GT aesthetics so that the film would be a "new beginning" for new fans and then reflect attention and viewers back onto GT as the "Current" iteration of the series.
      If this film and GT together had been wildly successful I could see a scenario where each of these films could continue to combine and retell major arcs and events of the series until the whole thing was covered.
      The 2nd movie being a big hodgepodge of meeting Krillin, training for the tournament, introducing Tien and co, but then King Piccolo returning and spoiling the tournament and taking over the final 2/3rds or second half of the film. Introducing Chi Chi as well.
      3rd movie about Piccolo Jr and having the tournament finally play out.
      4th movie for a big condensed version of the Saiyan arc. 5th and 6th as a two-parter for Namek and Frieza. 7th and 8th as a two-parter for Androids and Cell. 9th and 10th as a two-parter for Buu.

    My theory for why retellings of the beginning of Dragon Ball always include Yamcha and introcude Puar and Oolong together regardless of how pointless they are in the end, is due to some misguided assumption of Loyalty to Journey to the West...though that makes even less sense considering how much more useful Sandy tends to be in that story than Yamcha ever is despite getting about as much focus (as in not a lot).

  • @SpedeVesku
    @SpedeVesku Год назад +8

    This movie is messy in a lot of ways, mainly how it tries to force the ligh adventure story/tone of early Dragon Ball to the more action-focused style of later Dragon Ball, but I weirdly kinda find it a perfect blueprint to use, if someone ever wanted to try to adapt the franchise into a Hollywood movie again. By combining The Hunt for the Dragon Balls and Red Ribbon arcs, you get smaller (in comparison to other arcs) scale adventure/treasure hunt story, but also have a villain (and therefore action scenes) fitting for a big blockbuster movie. That would make so much more sense to me than starting with an adaptation of the Saiyan arc, which a lot of fans want to see.

    To be honest I absolutely love this movie! Way more than most other dragon ball films.
    I love it for it’s 2D animation, the aesthetics, the coloring, the backgrounds, the shading and highlights.
    And I really don’t agree that the movie doesn't do justice to it’s characters or the story it’s trying to tell. It’s a movie that’s longer then most movies that came before it. And I thought whatever time was spent on it was done rather well. Sure there are some scenes or characters that I think could maybe be fleshed out more, but this is a movie and not an episode series that could be told in multiple episodes so I’m perfectly am fine with the pacing and choices used to tell it’s story and characters. I mabey wouldn’t say it’s my absolute favorite DB movie, but as a standalone movie I think it’s great and easily an 8/10 if your in for a fun experience.

      My problem with the super 17 saga is that it just rehashed what happened in fusion reborn but worse despite being in a tv series and not a movie, seeing 17 again was nice but making him a villain again was dumb, one thing super did better was giving 17 a role among the other fighters.

    • @Thisdude850
      @Thisdude850 Год назад +1

      @@justinarzola4584 I would say even making 17 the villain itself was not what was bad but how it handled him, he was brainwashed for most of the arc so he was not even himself, it did not expand his character, it took away his character to make him an even more generic villain.

    I had the same reaction at 8:45 when I first saw the film. I don't know if i'd say its restraint or if its just flat out indecisive. Personally, I think they should have just done it. I actually found the build up to be fitting and would make for an interesting AU version of Goku's first SSJ transformation. But honestly even if that story itself is kinda nothing, it doesn't outstay its welcome and does give us a smoother and more natural start to the evil-dragons story that actually matters.

      And those are problems in the original. But very rarely would the manga be telling a single story, introduce a character, then have the character do nothing but sit on the sidelines for the rest of the story arc after one moment.
      Over the run of a decade-long manga, characters come in and out of focus. While it's unfortunate and could have been handled better, with Toriyama writing without knowing what's going to happen next or constantly refreshing himself on the manga, that's to be expected. But it really shouldn't happen in a single isolated movie.

    This movie (and the fact GT Final Bout came out in the states a few years later) always just served to confuse me when I was getting into the series. It uses the GT art style and Goku is a kid so, since we only ever got the Raditz part of Z so far, when is it? I know the Japanese directors didnt care about confusing a kid in America down the stretch, but that was my experience. Art's great tho.

    There's something about this movie that has always rubbed me the wrong way, and it's how it removes any subtlety from the original. And yeah, Dragon Ball isn't exactly Shakespeare, but let me give you an example: in the original manga/anime, Commander Red's Napoleon complex is a sudden unexpected joke. I may be misremembering, but I'm pretty sure it's not even mentioned up until his final moments when he talks about what he actually wants to use the Dragon Balls for. But the GT movie goes out of its way to establish that yes, this guy is tiny and really insecure about it. As far as I remember, there are two or three scenes hammering in on that joke before the reveal of his true motives. It feels way more kid-oriented, as if someone thought they had to beat the children watching over the head with the joke or they'll forget it. Another example is General White's redesign: in the original, he looks pretty unremarkable, like an average action movie villain. But the GT movie redesigns him so that you know that yes, this guy is, in fact, evil! He has a huge nose, a slender face and smokes a cigarette because you gotta hammer in how evil he is. Again, this just feels like the movie is being targeted to a younger demographic and trying to make everything as obvious as possible. And I'm sure there are plenty of examples like this throughout the movie.

      Gotta say, I am a fan of introducing Yamcha together with Oolong though lol. Given how Dragon Ball adaptations are known for being painfully slow, especially Z, such economic quick-paced introduction of characters in the same scene is really like a breath of fresh air.
      And I must admit that I do admire that the originally anticlimactic ending of the Red Ribbon Arc was given some dramatic weight here.

    • @SpedeVesku
      @SpedeVesku Год назад

      In the manga, there's one joke of Red telling Black to not stand too close to him, so he doesn't draw attention to how much shorter Red is, but that's just one joke told multiple chapters before the reveal, so it's easy to forget.

    Like what you have said about the previous original dragon ball movies, I've always wondered what would happen. Suppose they didn’t cancel GT and kept continuing in these movies. Would they go the Z route and adapt GT out of whatever they were doing at the time? Or back and re-adapt to the rest of the dragon ball arcs, which had yet to be covered like the tournament arcs and piccolo. It makes me think and honestly hope that even with the flaws of this movie, they do something like this in the future again; it’s interesting. I love rediscovering and interpreting the story in mixed and new ways

    • @gazeboist4535

      Come to think of it, the first tournament arc could have made a great movie. In fact, if you were going to adapt a segment of Dragonball to a one-and-done movie, I think that's the one I'd pick. It's simple and continuous, unlike the two arcs surrounding it, it's free of the continuity burden that would trouble a straight adaptation of most of the middle of Dragonball, and it doesn't have the sheer volume of stuff to cover that a true adaption of the Cell or Buu arcs would have to deal with.

    It is really nice looking. But I am curious. Would a movie version of one arc from the Z era work? A 2 hour movie of Namek Saga? Try to shorten it a little, maybe scale down characters more so that Goku dose´t have to be out of commission 2 times to reach Friezzas level. A nice what if but maybe good they did´t do that. More fun to see this based in young Dragonball era.
    I have seen this movie but over 10 years ago so I don´t remember much, it is pretty but messy.

    • @SpedeVesku
      @SpedeVesku Год назад

      Saiyan arc would probably be fairly easy to adapt into a movie, since its plot is relatively straightforward and with Vegeta and Nappa there are only two major villains (Raditz being kinda just an introductery villain) who would need ton of screen-time to be both effective threats and have satisfying fight scenes.
      As you said, Freeza/Namek saga could in theory be simplified into a movie, with things like Ginuy Force (I know they are fan-favorites, but in this situation they would take too much time) and some of Freeza's transformations cut out.
      Cell and Buu, on the other hand, have so many characters, new transformations and plot-turns that it would be by far more challenging to adapt them into movie. At least into movies that aren't longer than 50-80 minutes the original patch of Dragon Ball movies were.
