In your customization settings you can set it so you play as an Elite instead of a Spartan when applicable (i.e., not during the campaign or firefight). You can even change which harness you wear.
Imagine going on a stealth mission, and at the time where you have to absolutely be quiet. Your shields beeper malfunctions and just rings alerting the enemy.

The BEST thing about Halo: Reach in my opinion regarding this topic is the ear ringing you get from grenades going off. Made the immersion so good!
Half Life 2 did that in 2004. I wish more games remembered the small details of immersion that added to the distinctive feel of a game.
Realistically that shouldn’t happen though because they’re all wearing fully enclosed helmets 500+ years into the future.

Bungie halo had excellent immersion meanwhile in Infinite you grapple a grunt you fly towards them and they literally say "THIS DOESNT MAKE ANY SENSE"

They had it in Halo 2, dropped it in Halo 3, brought it back for reach, I have no idea why. Someone might have to ask Marty O'Donnel.

The No-shield sound, seems that came from a modified version of The Pillar of Autumn's alarm.
I think the no shields sfx comes from fighter jets. I saw a video from a cockpit perspective where they pulled too many G’s and that alarm went off.
I like that idea, but I think it comes from landlines when your were unable to connect
