Good vid. Couple of points -- - for the feeder, just block off the bottom of the Y. Preferably with a mesh or hardware cloth to allow dust drainage. Plenty of options, there. Screws/Nails/Brads to hold up some hardware cloth. Stiffer hardware cloth shaped to sit in the hole and allow the cap to be removed for cleaning. You can even stick a board leaning to the back of the pipe to provide an angled floor or slide. - You only need the purple stuff on PVC meant for pressure, like water pipes to a house. The purple softens the PVC so that the glued ends become 1 unit. Acrylic workers do a similar thing with their "glue" products. It doesn't hurt to use the purple in this waterer, but it is optional unless you are connecting to way more pressure than those nips can handle. - For those looking for PVC, the common gauges (wall thickness) are 120, 40, and 80. For whatever reason, 120 is the thinnest, and 80 is the heaviest. 40 gauge is the most commonly used PVC piping in every application I am familiar with. ALSO, there is the usual white and the UV resistant black PVC. Both are suitable for potable water, but sunlight will make the white pipes brittle.
You are so lucky that I understand “man talk”..... for a gal, you give 1/2 instructions....but this gal raised 6 men, so I have the ability to translate. LOL
The intro presentation really thru me towards well... lets watch not how to do it. Ended up learning a lot more various trade stuff you don't normally see. Props on using what you have and making the most of it!
They are probably 1/8th pipe threads.use a tap to cut threads in pictures pipe. I like the roost. Slick ! My coop is 4x5x5 tall rear 6 tall rear. Nesting box is on one end but I think I'm going to move it to the rear and put roost where box was.( didn't cut entrances to box yet ) . Now my roost will be where box was. Chicken entrance will be on opposite end of where box was so should work out fine. Should have made coop 4 X 8 instead of 4x5. First go around with chick's. I'm a wrench not carpenter. Lol Getr dun son
I found that my feeders hold water when it gets wet and the food will mold. Had to only use them inside my coop and put lids on them at night to keep down the mice.
Love all of it I'm getting ready to upgrade my chicken coop and thes are some of my plans I'm planning on using rain water for mine thank you very much
You are definitely one of the best if not the best at keeping it simple but building a great functional product. Anyone looking to build or add on to their coop should follow you. Thank you very much.
Nice looking 4x4’s, I know that sounds like a weird thing to say but all I’ve seen around here for years is P.T 4x4’s for years now. At least the big box type lumber yards. Your chickens will be proud to roost. 👍 cheers🍻🇨🇦🥂🇺🇸
Thank you you make it look so easy. I don't know what to do about my chickens? I have their food in a 5 gal. pail but they really don't like to eat from that. I will be trying your way. Thank you.
I built my coop a few years ago using many of the ideas you have shown. The issue in Colorado is winter cold that freezes the water so I used cups rather than nipples as you have shown. Eventually had to go to a heated water system. The other issue is squirrels eating the plastic pipe so I switched to a metal manufactured feeder. You did a great a d simple coop and I am confident your chickens are happy with their home.
Most people are using 5 gal buckets for water Spicket’s maybe that why they didn’t want to work on the pvc. Putting those water hose ends on a hose. Heat is the trick. I get water almost boiling, stick hose in for a few, works pretty good. I liked the torch job on the plastic barrel!! Custom Fit!!
Yea i think the schedule 40 pipe i used for the nipples was to thick. Maybe schedual 20 would work better. I like the hot water trick. Thanks for watching.
❤ love your crafty ness, suggestion on your pvc feeder, if you find them waiting food , you can insert a half moon 🌙 shape into the feeding end that will deter them from scraping it out, I have seen someone do that and it seems like a great idea 😊🎉🎉oh yes on the watering thing , water cups they have as well and they seem great for splay beaks❣️
How and where do you install the half moon,, top bottom or side of the end. How do you install to keep it form coming out. My hens completely dump four entire tubes in one day onto the ground.
Really appreciate your "step by step". So many videos just show the finished product, but there are always a lot of steps that are important to know. Question: how many chickens will you have in your coop? Thanks again.
How many different Makita tools do you have? Love it 😂 Thanks a lot for the tips, newbie chicken owner here and I’m not liking the standard feeders and waterers at all!
Thanks for doing a great video. I am at the point of finishing out my first coop and was trying to decide how to do a roost bar over a poop board. I will definitely try your idea to swing it up out of the way for cleaning!
@@JoeSimple I have my roost (27" up) and poop board 8" below that and needed idea for mid-height "ladder" (not so much a secondary roost) to help the chunky ladies get down after a good night's sleep. Thinking to cut down to 1.25"x3.5" so NOT as comfortable for roost, but stable enough to offer a "jump-down" from roost OR an interior 2x6 with rungs, like the exterior "entry plank"; steep-ish, but they'll train to it ... I "incorporated" a 5'x4.5'x6' coop under an exterior shed roof where firewood used to go. Funny how many folk admit to having to train them to roost ... I am first time chickerder with 6 aquila in a big wally-world tub in the dining room with a heat lamp right now.
@@ultimatestewartfan A poop board is basically a shelf covered with something that is easy to clean (vinyl? linoleum?), that is installed under the roosting bars to catch all the poop the chickens put out at nighttime. Poop dries on the board, then you just scrape it off and compost it.
Wow, thank you so much! Everything I was looking to make this weekend!! (Minus the water, I'm doing the cups on a 5 gallon bucket) I'm so excited that I only need to buy the large bolts for the roosting bars - that design is EXACTLY what I wanted to do I just needed to see it done.
I tired the pvc. Got more feed on the ground than in the pipe. When with a 50 gallon plastic trash can with thing i bought off amazon and i love it so much more
I bought a bunch of those water fittings, which all worked alright for a while. But within a few months they all started leaking and I loss all the water in my tank. I switched to some that have a little cup for the water to sit in and those so far haven’t gave me any troubles yet. Think the chicken like the cups better too! I’m curious how the heating the pipe worked for getting your water chicken valves in the pipe. Any problems with the valves coming loose or leaking? I was able to get mine to screw into my pvc pipe. But after a while they somehow seem to strip out and spin around just from the chickens pecking at the water valves. Doesn’t seem like much is made with quality in mind any more? Still looking for the perfect long lasting solution that doesn’t have to be replaced every few years if not sooner?
Ahh the good old days of cheep materials. PVC has skyrocketed. I found mine at the local plumbing supply it's typically used for rain water drainage or French drains. Happy building!

I'm looking for ideas for my Hurricane proof chicken coop...Not too impressed with the feeder or the watering system...But you got a well deserved thumbs up for your fold up roost...that will make clean up easy.
When you show water drum systems. Why don't you show how that system gets cleaned out? It's clear you can't just run water through there all the time without contamination build up over time. Especially rain water. Disinfecting the system every so often is important to health. Like we do with human systems for drinking water. This system of yours will not work in states with freezing temps in winter obviously. So, letting any water in the system sit in there for months will cause contamination in the spring. Show people how to clean it.
It's obvious you've never had chickens. Don't leave feed out 24-7, rats, snakes, birds , mice will be grateful. Skunks ,coons, cats, bobcats , possums, hawks, dogs, will get in your pen. One day you'll come out to feed , and find feathers everywhere, along with your dead half eaten birds. Sad but true. Also fox's , coyotes! You have rung their dinnerbell! Set livetraps to catch varments, and killem don't release em! Good luck!
It’s called installing predator proof fencing. If he has that, then his food and chickens with be fine. The smaller mice might be an issue but I think he will be ok.

You said "laziness," but I call that working smarter, not harder. Simplifying tasks is a true talent!
Exactly what I was thinking
I would do the same , anything that works .
The old gravity bong trick, works almost every time
Put some apple cider vinegar in the water, it keeps the alge down and gives the chickens some nutrients
You are so lucky that I understand “man talk”..... for a gal, you give 1/2 instructions....but this gal raised 6 men, so I have the ability to translate. LOL
I have the same cordless saw, mines backwards too. 😂
Perfect.
Just don't harm the chickens they love you

Cutting the ladder rungs... efficient. Not lazy. Old boards could vary..cutting the rungs while using the board as a fence..... works!
😊great crafty information, thank you
I would have not thought of using a torch....new technique!!! Awesome!!! Thanks much!!!
👍 great job
I love that you shared mess ups and how you fixed them. You kept it real! Thank you.
I found that my feeders hold water when it gets wet and the food will mold. Had to only use them inside my coop and put lids on them at night to keep down the mice.
If you really loved your chickens you would have installed an escalator ! Very nice work, good tips and a nice little flock.

Amazing video! I just moved my birds to my coop and need to do all of these things and found them all in 1 video!!!
#Subbed
thank you so much. you've taught me so much in only a few videos!
Very nice ! Chickens do like to grasp the roost with their feet ! Something round is better for the birds. I like all else ! 💕
Thanks for doing a great video. I am at the point of finishing out my first coop and was trying to decide how to do a roost bar over a poop board. I will definitely try your idea to swing it up out of the way for cleaning!

Awesome tips!! Thank you
What tool were you using when you cut off the excess 1x 2 pieces? Loved the video
Nice I've been using your framing ideas to try an make a porch lol wish me luck.
On the feeders, I would have used an elbow. The current design will have the same food continuously trapped in the bottom until it's cleaned out.
Well done

Really helpful and informative videos. Thank you! In the first video you mentioned that you would share the plans. Are they available?
This could have been a superb video if your display of step progress showing would have been in video view.
Nice video, Why do you want to be able to raise and lower the roost?
I can taste the eggs for breakfast
Eggs for breakfast lunch and dinner.🤮
Can you please tell me what kind of saw you used on the chicken "ladder"?

Joe, Great videos on the coop. New subscriber here. Did you ever post a copy of the plans for the coop? I hope to build one just like it.
New sub, leaving a comment to make sure it sticks. Great video, definitely more my speed lol. Will check out your others too. Keep up the great work.
How many chickens are you putting in there
11:20 😂😂😂
How do u go with water going into the feeder?
The reason the chicken raises his heD to drink he is thinking God for the water 😊
I have avoided a pipe water system because I have iron in my water, and I don't want to try to clean the pipe over and over. Any thoughts?
What is aquamating?
5/16 was the bit to use
