Do not know anyone who is deaf (I do have sensory issues that can sometimes count as hard of hearing but eh) and I still got ridiculously excited as well 😂
despite how i feel regarding the accuracy of Netflix's captions, it was awesome that they even included [in BSL] with the words rather than just showing the words by themselves
Yessss it’s a massive pet peeve when I just see “speaking Spanish” like put the words dude!!! Idk why they don’t give the person captioning access to the scripts or smth. Like there’s deaf people that speak Spanish!!!
Afaik it's bc translators would be paid better than a person just doing captions. So even if the person doing captions speaks the language they're often not allowed to translate it bc then they'd need to be paid a better rate and the studios don't want to do that
From what I gathered later on, is that the mother is deaf but the daughter is not (I think I saw the later speak with other debutantes) I was very happy to see such a smooth inclusivity :)
It’s kind of crazy to hear about. Did you know that the American Sign Language we know today was actual a descendent of French Sign Language? For whatever reason BSL wasn’t established in the Americas, so a French man brought over FSL and taught it, but it evolved into ASL, with some elements that define its roots in FSL.
Also in this season one of the eligible suitors is in a wheelchair. Hope to see these diverse characters get more screen time in the future! Edit: It's been brought up that the phrase "diverse characters" is harmful as it implies that some people are "normal" while others are "diverse/abnormal". I want to apologize for using harmful language, and recognize that an appropriate phrase could be "diverse range of characters." I'll be using this term from here on out.
@@candypanda7975 Sadly, using a mobility device was even more taboo for prospective suitors back then than it is today, often due to ignorance around the possibilities for reproduction if one partner was wheelchair-bound. A marriage proposal for royals often hinged on a prospect's ability to bear a child, since producing an heir was considered far more important than an emotional connection or sexual attraction. Change is slow though; it wasn't that long ago that US President Franklin D. Roosevelt used some of the most creatively engineered braces and wheelchairs I've ever seen to effectively simulate walking and conceal the fact that he could not walk without them. (His legs were left mostly paralyzed after he contracted polio.) FDR knew that Americans back then would not elect a man in a wheelchair to lead the nation. You can google some of the devices he used, they were truly incredible technological marvels for the time. Hell, every US presidential election in the last decade has seen seemingly endless commentary on the physical capabilities of the nominees and whether they're physically "virile" enough to be president. It's insane that this is still happening at all! Okay, that got rambly. Sorry about that.
But they didn't even sign the words they just fingerspelt everything to each other! She hates me is 3 signs! Point to the other person, both hands grasp once at the air in front of you (one hand above the other) and then point to yourself. "No you're perfect" is again 3 signs. A closed fist moving to the side is no, points to the other person is you and then perfect is 👌 this sign like the lady even does it after spelling the word. The amount of signs we do and we don't even realise they're legit signs (yes I'm talking about swearing)
The deaf debutante and the suitor on a wheelchair were two lovely tidbits in this season and I applaud Shonda Rhimes for including them. Hoping to see more representations in the second part
You should definitely react to some of ‘The Dragon Prince’ signing scenes! It’s an amazing fantasy show with a lot of representation with communities such as the queer community, the disabled community, etc. It implements a lot of the real world problems and how they over come it, such as racism between the two species, and war. The main characters’ aunt is deaf, however that doesn’t stop the creators from making her a badass general. It’s refreshing to see the time and effort taken into implementing these details.
Now I’m looking forward to seeing this scene myself now that I know what to look for. It’s so cool to me to see characters use sign language and not make a big deal out of it by having someone slowly and dramatically say out loud everything they’re saying.
I literally replayed the scene to make sure I wasn’t imagining things lol it was so exciting! I don’t even know BSL but I’m so happy that there is that representation
I was so happy to see it in Bridgerton too!! I was like "YAY!!" I really love how diverse they are in this series! I hope they continue to grow with it!
I'm a highschool senior and in my third year learning ASL and this scene made me so insanely happy. I am a huge Bridgerton fan and this little detail just added so much more.
I also love how supportive the mom is, clearly they could tell the queen wasn't interested, but she's like "Impossible. You are perfect", implying that the queen's esteem of her child doesn't equate to her child's worth.
I was supper excited to see that and then really disappointed because for a minor character she is very present for the the next few episodes and this is the only sign language we see from her unfortunate
The fact that I was just helping my mom with something and saw the was watching this and then I lay down in my room and this is one of the next shorts is crazy
The mother/father I think is deaf or hard of hearing as the daughter later in the episodes speaks in a group and then dances with Benedict. Causing misunderstanding of marital intentions of course lol
I LITERALLY THOUGHT OF YOUR VIDEOS WHEN I SAW THIS!! I started screaming and pointing it out to my mom, we have an aunt who just passed who was deaf and I know this would have meant a lot to her!!
I saw this and had to rewind to watch again. And then I hoped you’d do a reaction. I wish we would have seen more of them signing, but maybe there will be in the “part 2.”
I love stuff like this because thats how I started my journey with sign as a code art to talk to my friends in rooms i couldnt hear them in. (I have really bad auditory issues but am not deaf) i have learned so much sense then thank you!
Saw this and legit screamed and brought my hard of hearing daughter into the room… then we commenced with more squealing! Love the representation!

That's so cool, they say bsl was invented sometime in the late 1700s. So it fits for the time period.

This might be a dumb question but we're wheelchairs a thing back then?
@@candypanda7975 yes. They were either regular chairs with wheels attached or a wicker chair with wheels.
@@charliegoodwin1933 thank you!

Yesss my career isnt over!
I realized this is the first time I've seen sign language in a film/series used casually
I got so excited. I love that they don't make it a big deal. She's just naturally there
There’s also an eligible bachelor in a wheelchair and I loved him. There’s more representation this season and I love it!
The way I paused it and ran, not walked, to my mum's room to tell her!!
I scream “oh my gosh we got a deaf character and they are signing!” My grandma looked at me blinking rapidly because I was too loud.
I love the casual representation.
I was so giddy when that came up like “YES!! MORE INTERNATIONAL SIGNING👐🏻🤟🏻👏🏻”
I watched this part and I thought of you😭
Me too! But I forgot his name so I was very happy to find this :)
I noticed that too and I was so thrilled!
I just.
I just love Bridgerton so much

im so glad you saw that! I just saw the episode and thought how cool it would be for you to react to it!!! Ahhhhh im so glad 😊
omg i rewound too many times wondering what that sign for "hate" was before i saw "P-E-R-" and realised they were just fingerspelling 😅

I also love how supportive the mom is, clearly they could tell the queen wasn't interested, but she's like "Impossible. You are perfect", implying that the queen's esteem of her child doesn't equate to her child's worth.

I was waiting to see your reaction to this!!! I was like OMG!!!
Omg! I missed it. There needs to be more in movies & series, please.
I noticed that! I was like oooh very cool, and i liked that her mother used them as well rather than talking.

Yes 🎉🎉🎉 so cool that BSL was included 🎉
That is a fabulous catch.
THe white on white is hard to catch. I want to get a bigger scene to read it.
I remember watching this scene and thinking, "I wonder how long it'll take until that one guy I've seen on the Internet sees this" 😂
