The Break A Leggers review The Duchess of Malfi at the Almeida Theatre in London.
Almeida Associate Director Rebecca Frecknall follows her Olivier Award-winning production of Summer and Smoke and Three Sisters with The Duchess of Malfi, John Webster’s revenge tragedy about rage, resistance and a deadly lust for power.
Lydia Wilson returns to the Almeida to play the Duchess, following her Olivier Award-nominated performance in King Charles III.
When the Duchess falls in love with her steward Antonio, her corrupt brothers embark on a chilling plot to destroy her marriage, power and agency. What begins as a jealous plan to extinguish her love becomes a bloodthirsty quest to extinguish her life.
Will it be Break A Leg? Or LEG IT!!

I'm studying this play in my a-level English class. The highlight of my days is reading bosola's part and insulting people/society. It's a good anger vent, but it doesn't quite make up for all of the 5 page handwritten essays.

I think what made it relevant was the fact it criticises jacobean politics; the machiavellian figure calling out the corruption of the court is supposedly talking about Italian nobility, but it's veiled calling out of James the first and his mistakes. Also, witchcraft and the gothic were really popular and new back in Stuart Times, so including a bunch of darkness and supernatural references made the audience like :O. Also, everyone was sexist so they felt more compulsion and emotions when the female character die. Hope that helps :)

I find your honesty refreshing. So much better than formal paper reviews. If you've not seen 'The Ocean at the End of the Lane', I highly recommend it.

Have you seen the lion the witch and the wardrobe at the bridge theatre? Really would like to see your review on that one. I saw it tonight - a real staging spectacle with some excellent ideas and visuals but want to hear your opinion to maybe justify some of the flaws I found 😂 overall would recommend though; a fun, nostalgic one for sure!

As a long-time English prof, I will likely be seeing this production of the play when I come back to London later this month, in spite of your less-than-enthusiastic review. I have seen it done previously at the Sam Wanamaker Theatre when it was their opening production back in 2014. It had the wonderful Gemma Arterton in the lead, as well as one my favorite Globe Theatre actors James Garnon (oh, that marvelous voice!) as the evil Cardinal, along with one of you guys' favorite actresses, Denise Gough. What a cast! Many years ago, I also saw it done at the Wyndham's Theatre by a company called Cheek by Jowl. You would have loved that one's design a lot because the floor of the stage was laid out as a chess board, so the various actors moved as did their chess counterparts: the Duchess moved like the Queen, the Cardinal could only move on the squares as the Bishop piece can, the brother's movements were limited to those of the chess King, i.e. one space at a time, etc. Seen from the balcony, it was an intriguing production indeed. Love your reviews. Maybe I'll run into you two at a London show some time.

Saw the Old Vic production a few years ago. Didn't have a clue what was going on (only remember the towering set). Will not be rushing to see more Jacobean drama.

Completely agree. Honestly the only way to make this play good would be a Robert Icke adaption! Waiting on your best of 2019 video

I am going on Thursday and really looking forward to it, as I love the play. But I did have a similar experience to you when I first saw it where I did not give a hoot about the characters, I was so disengaged. And then I saw it at the
Old Vic with Eve Best about 6 years ago and started to see a way into it. There is a BBC film of Gemma Arterton playing the part from the Sam Wanamaker that I have seen appear on RUclips some times.
