    A year ago, a senior in high school I watched this video on how to become a firefighter. Fast forward a year later and I just got hired on full time on a good department at 18. This last year was the hardest year of my life, high school, Emt school, Entry level and Firefighter 1, a job, trainings and running calls on 2 different volunteer departments. All this was at the same time but the hard work payed off and I now wake up everyday excited to go to work in my dream career.

      @@jasonibarra5513 Yes, some departments out there utilize a poly test.
      Typically they ask questions pertaining to the history statement of your background packet and any other follow up questions they feel is pertinent to their investigation.
      Pretty much they want to make sure that you aren't lying about anything (in your personal history statement), you aren't a danger to others, you aren't a liability or risk to their organization, etc.
      Depending on the agency delivering the investigation, they will have their own policies and procedures they follow to conduct their background investigation on you.

      Firefighter Ambitions what are the best steps to take? Military, university, community college, or anything else? I am a senior and I’m captain for the water polo team and wrestling team. I got accepted to Chico state and San Marcos. But I am also thinking of doing something like combat medic in the army to help with the emt and paramedic licensing. But I’m also thinking of going to a community college to get my certs as quick as possible. I live with my brother and his wife he is 32 and I’m 17. I’m a 5’10 150lb white male. I’m not sure which route to take that will give me the best chance to being accepted. I live in riverside county and I’m applying to a station to be an explorer very soon.

    • @FirefighterAmbitions
      @FirefighterAmbitions  4 года назад +2

      @@brettappleby9311 First off, congratulations on your successes. Honestly, the best steps to take are specific to you as an individual. All of those options are great routes to gain experience, knowledge, and the required certifications to become a firefighter. I personally went to college to get my bachelors and to play football prior to pursuing my fire career. That's what worked for me.
      You don't have to take this route to become a firefighter, but it can benefit you in several ways: you get your education (even better if your pursue a fire science degree or a degree that closely relates to a public service career), you gain life experience and knowledge, also depending on the department you are testing for you become qualified to receive "preference points" in the recruitment process (which are bonus points towards your overall testing score), etc.
      It honestly depends on what you want to do. I have several academy brothers that just got the necessary certifications and started testing as soon as they became qualified. You can totally take this route (get your EMT cert, and while your waiting on an opportunity to test you can get other certifications like your firefighter 1 & 2, your hazmat first responder, and any other certifications you desire.
      Unless these specific certifications listed above are required by a specific department, they don't necessarily make or break you (meaning you don't have to have them, unless required to), but they can help you throughout the process by giving you more to talk about come interview time, gained insight and knowledge about the career of a firefighter, looks great on a resume, and most importantly you can build your network (meeting fellow candidates and firefighters throughout your courses).
      I am a huge advocate of higher education. Getting my college degree meant a lot so I chose that path, but as of now it isn't required to become a firefighter.
      If you know that firefighting is the career for you, then go get the required certifications and documentations for the department(s) you wish to work for and begin testing.
      Quick tips if you choose this path:
      1) Be sure to prepare your family for the grind to get in the career and for the career. Your family will be your biggest supporters and advocates throughout your entire journey
      2) Get the necessary requirements to test where you wish to test (EMT, medic, CPAT, hazmat, firefighter 1 & 2, etc.) be sure to do your research ahead of time so you know exactly what you'll need to be qualified. Typically the minimum requirements are:
      - 18 years of age or older
      - High school diploma or GED
      - EMT certification
      - CPAT certification
      - Valid drivers license
      3) Get out and build your network (i.e. meet other candidates and firefighters throughout your courses, go volunteer at fire department events [charity and union events], etc.) The more you show firefighters and fire departments what you have to offer the, the more you can increase your exposure and odds of becoming a firefighter.
      4) Get a mentor, preferably a firefighter. Be sure it's someone you can relate to and trust. A mentor can really help navigate you throughout your entire process to becoming a firefighter and also help you throughout your career as a firefighter. (**Also, never heists to reach out to me for help with anything, ill do my best to help in any way that I can)
      5) Start working on your interview NOW. Take consistent and daily action in this area. The firefighter interview is one of the biggest separators when it comes to firefighter candidates. You want to be as sharpe as you possibly can come interview day.
      6) Be sure to review this page:

      Firefighter Ambitions thank you so much, I wasn’t expecting such a detailed answer but wow that is awesome. That really helps and I appreciate more than you will know. The only thing that keeps making me hesitate a 4-year is that there really isn’t any colleges in California around my area that I can pursue a degree in that correlates to becoming a firefighter, for example not one university around me has fire science. But I do know that mt San jacinto community college is like 15 minutes away and has a good program to receive my certs quickly. But at the same time I will be getting my college for free anyway so I really want that degree. And my brother went through navy seal training and wants me to join the military for the benefits and experience and not to mention being able to save money for those years I’m in. It’s an option but I’m leaning towards a 4-year. Any tips specifically during college. I chose media and arts, graphic design for one of my majors and nutritional sciences for my other. Obviously I will be kind of wasting time because that has nothing to do with firefighting. I can look into the majors more in depth and see which ones I might correlate with firefighting and request a major change but that’s a whole different story. But other than my major if I do go to a 4-year what should I do during that time? How could I earn any of my certs while In college if my major doesn’t have anything to do with that and from the circumstances I’m in what do you think would be the smartest move. I also kind of want to just go to a community and get it done and hopefully get in and have a career right away but I just have a small gut feeling the 4-year is a better option. I just would like to hear some different options from different people and narrow them down as I’m coming into the end of the first semester of senior year it’s coming very soon.

      @@brettappleby9311 Hey my apologies for the late response. I want you to know that you don't have to get a degree in fire science or any specific degree like that if you don't want to. I originally pursued kinesiology as well but had to switch over to my backup degree (sociology) due to scheduling complications with football and the Kinesiology program requirements.
      If you have the desire to pursue a 4-year degree, you can get the degree in any category you want. Don't worry about the degree not "specifically" being tailored for firefighting. It really isn't that important. We as firefighters are looking to hire someone we can live with for a third of our lives. You having or not having a degree doesn't necessarily make you the right hire. Who you are, what you value and represent, and what you have to offer the departments is whats going to get you hired over everything else.
      There are several advantages, like we spoke previously about to getting a bachelors degree, the most important ones being gained skills, merit, relationships, and life experience. But remember generally, the minimum requirements educationally speaking are a high school diploma or GED, and EMT.
      Although, having any higher education helps make you more marketable.
      Heres another option as well, if you truly have the desire to achieve a bachelors degree but don't want to put getting the required certifications for firefighting off till after you graduate, be sure to look for an ACCELERATED EMT program somewhere, preferably offered during the time school is out (i.e. summer).
      I took a 9-week accelerated EMT program that worked out well with my schedule. I've heard of others taking EMT programs alike and some even taking programs more accelerated.
      Do your research on it, you may have to travel to another location to do so, unless some sort of online program is offered.
      Another option is to focus on pursuing your firefighter career; get your minimum requirements, network, volunteer when it fits your work schedule, work on your interview skills, study written exam material, continue to train and make healthy nutrition a lifestyle, and start testing for open firefighter positions. Then once you are fortunate enough to earn a firefighter position and graduate from the fire academy (and maybe probation as well, depending on your ability to multitask and affectively manage your time) then you can slowly start to pursue your bachelors degree as a part time student or so on your off days from work. Luckily a lot of programs offer online courses as well that will help you achieve a bachelors degree. I know several firefighters that have taken this route.
      You can also go the junior college route part time to get your general education classes done while still obtaining your EMT and doing what needs to be done that will increase your chances of getting a firefighter job (i.e all the tasks we spoke about previously). I know several people that have taken this route. It's a smart plan as well. That way your checking off multiple boxes at a time
      So you definitely have options, it all depends on what is going to work best for you.
      I hope this helps you out, keep me posted on everything and never hesitate to reach back out

I'm still eligible for hire till August of 2021 but about a month ago I got an email saying again I wasn't going to be selected and again no specific reason as to why.. If I'm not selected one year to the date I received my conditional offer I have to start ALL OVER again with the entry exam, I feel like it's just to test my willingness and mental durability considering how far I've come but man does it hit different when your city rejected you twice in a short span, I'm trying hard not to give in cause I know I want it bad and more than others💪

      Hey Omar, no worries at all. We’ve all been there man. I remember the stress of trying to figure everything out. It’s not as bad as you think. To answer your first question, you don’t have to go to college to become a firefighter in many departments (EMT for the most part is required though, which can be taken at your local college, accredited training facility, or potentially online). There are many departments that require that you have a firefighter 1 &/or 1&2 certification that is typically taken at a college that offers a fire program (I personally didn’t have to go this route to test, the departments I tested for didn’t require that certification). There are some departments that require candidates to have a paramedic license as well. You can take any route that works best for you and your schedule. Many roads lead to the same destination (a firefighter job). I for the most part recommend to all my students and candidates to get your EMT first so you can become eligible to start testing for departments that you qualify for. As for wild land firefighting, that process is alil different than a structural firefighter career path (I.e. the testing processes, etc). This page should add some Clarity ( firefighterambitions.com/become-a-firefighter ) I hope this helps you. 💪🏼😊

    Would having military firefighting experience give me a leg up in the competition to earning a civilian fireman position?

    • @FirefighterAmbitions
      @FirefighterAmbitions  4 года назад +1

      Hey Shaun, Thanks for the kind words.
      And it's awesome that you want to be a firefighter.
      But as for your questions, I've recently answered a similar question of someone that wanted to take the same path as you. Here’s what I touched on:
      If you are looking to become a career structural firefighter, you will have to gain the necessary certifications to be eligible to test.
      - EMT
      And possibly,
      - Paramedic (if the departments you want to pursue require them)
      - Firefighter 1 &/or 2 (if the departments you want to pursue require them)
      Now for the question of you having a leg up on the normal civilian, your future military experience/contributions will come with some power. But it doesn’t change that you have to obtain the minimum requirements to be eligible test, you have to be a solid person, and that you’ll have to perform well throughout the firefighter testing process.
      Your military experience will be HUGE. It’ll show that you understand what it means to belong to something bigger than yourself, you understand the importance of the team, you understand the chain of command, you know to follow and execute orders, and so much more.
      There are many departments out there that offer “military preference points” as well. This means that you can get additional “bonus points” at the conclusion of your testing processes that can really help boost your score, separate you from others, and potentially help land you a job.
      I must reiterate, you have to still perform well. Although your future fire training and structural fire training differ in many ways, the fact that you’ll have fire experience will be very beneficial.
      I hope this helps you out. Let me know if you have any more questions, I’m here to help the best I can.
      😊

      That's awesome Madison. Here are a few tips I tell the younger members of the community:
      - Focus on your education and work hard to get great grades (the best you can possibly do)
      - Continue to learn about the career/job of a firefighter
      - Continue to grow your network (meet other firefighters, fire candidates, and visit other fire departments if they are allowing riders/visitors)
      - Be sure to develop and stick to a strict fitness regimen. As you know the job requires a high physical demand. The firefighter CPAT is just the tip top of the ice berg.
      - Along with training, be sure to make healthy nutrition a lifestyle. 8-9/10 making the right decisions, giving your body the best chances to perform for you.
      - Start to prepare for EMT school as soon as possible. Check out our NREMT instructional videos, grab an EMT book and start to explore it alil. That way come time for school, you will already be a step ahead.
      - Dive into the requirements of the firefighter testing process. Begin Studying firefighter written exam material now,
      - Work on your firefighter interview DAILY. This will play a massive role in your future firefighter interviews
      - Begin to build a resume (be sure to continually add updates to it)

      Yes getting your EMT allows you to start testing for many fire departments (if you have the other minimum requirements as well). For the most part, I tend to recommend that candidates pursue their EMT first as well.
      I would google search EMT programs in your area and see what results pop up.
      You can also reach out to your local colleges and see if they offer a fire science or EMT program.
      Don't be afraid to reach out to your local fire departments and see if they know of any EMT programs available near you.
      As for cost, EMT programs can vary depending on the school/training facility, duration, etc. Generally, you can get a rough estimate of about $900-$1400. Mine was a 9-week accelerated program that cost about $1200.

    Hello, I’m currently attending university right now but I realize that it’s not right for me. I’ve been wanting to do firefighting for a while now but I’m worried about the acceptance rates and how hard it is to get a job in sf as a firefighter. I’m planning to get my emt license go to the CCSF fire academy and get the fire protection certificate and the fire science degree but I was wondering if there was anything else I can do so I could get hired ASAP. Please let me know if you know any firefighters in sf I can get in contact with and thanks for all the amazing advice!

    Love the video! I studied fire science in high school and enrolled in the emt program at my local community College. I had to stop because I had a child and became a single dad. Now, I'm 29, 80 lbs lighter and in better shape, and more mentally mature. Things have settled down and it seems the universe is pointing me back to the job. Do you think it's too late for me? Or do they like life experience? I've heard people say both.

      Joe, based on the information you've shared with me, you have a heck of a story to tell. Experiences like you've experienced are what we as firefighters can relate to. I grew up in a single parent household and have seen my mom struggle to barley keep us afloat, while still trying to better herself and make something of her life. So I totally understand what you have been overcoming.
      Father to father, you are truly something special. A young man who made a decision that changed his life forever and steps up to the plate handling his responsibilities is somebody I would hire in a heart beat. Obviously you'd have to meet the other minimum requirements and standards to be qualified.
      What I'm trying to say is, you're far from being too late. I went through the fire academy with guys in their 40's (they were studs too). I've also had the pleasure of hiring recruits clear over your age. Simply put, if you have the necessary qualifications, meet the fire department standards, have a good criminal background, and you crush the firefighter recruitment process (i.e. written, physical, interview, possible pre-academy) you'll have a great shot at achieving your goal of becoming a firefighter.
      Go for it Joe. Create a strong foundation for your family and become a career firefighter.
      Where are you at with everything? Are you getting ready to get back in an EMT class?

Anything to improve my chances and gain experience. Also my local fire district is hiring volunteers and some of my old friends from fire science are on the job encouraging me to apply. @@HippySpeedballPodcast Absolutely my man. I will be here to help you make it.
      And it sounds like you're all over it, awesome. Go get your EMT and get the ball rolling again.
      Keep in mind to do a great job of getting out and networking with as many firefighters and fire departments that you can (i.e. go on ride-alongs). This will definitely help increase your chances of success. Go show firefighters what you are all about and prove to them all that you are an undeniable candidate for their department.
      Some quick tips when networking:
      1) Always be on your best behavior (of course). It just takes one bad encounter to create a bad reputation for yourself. Remember we as firefighters all talk with one another and rumors spread like wild fire.
      2) Grab some black steel toe boots, a black belt, navy blue dickies (or something equal to), and a white, black, or grey cotton or collard shirt to wear during your ride-alongs. Also, be sure to bring some PT shorts, shoes, and a shirt to wear just incase you train with the fire crew.
      3) Always bring some treats or coffee for the fire crew you are riding with (i.e. ice cream). Do this every time you are blessed with an opportunity to ride with the fire department, unless you are specifically told NOT to do so by the fire crew.
      4) Always plan some notes/questions ahead of time so that you have material you want to specifically work on with the fire crew (i.e. certain interview questions you'd like to work on, certain fire equipment you'd like to learn about, etc). Never just show up empty handed with no plan. This will help the fire crew further help you based on your specific needs. (Note: be sure to do a good job of writing things down that you learn. Try your best to keep all notes organized. This will come in handy later when you're preparing for your firefighter interview)
      5) WORK ON YOUR FIREFIGHTER INTERVIEW SKILLS PRIOR TOO YOUR VISIT. The fire crew is going to ask you several questions to see what you're made of. And believe me the fire candidates that come in sharpe, prepared, and who can remotely crush an interview question, tend to be remembered. And like I said before, we all talk to one another, especially about potential fire candidates, so know that if you fit the mold of the department and do well on your ride-alongs, you will be recommended to go see others members within the department. This is a GOOD thing.
      6) Most importantly, Humble yourself, be coachable, speak when spoken to (or as we say "listen twice as much as you talk), and HAVE FUN!
      Good luck in EMT school, be sure to check out some of the instructional videos we have on the NREMT skills, they've helped many candidates before you succeed in their skill exams

I haven't started anything as of yet and am about to apply into an EMT course. I haven't done any ride-a-longs due to COVID (I haven't caught it luckily). So basically I am getting started in pursuit to becoming one I am just making sure that I am on the right track.

      @FirefighterAmbitions  3 года назад +1

      Yes you are on the right track. Go get your EMT, ensure that you have the other minimum qualifications, and start testing for departments you qualify for.
      In between now and when you begin to test, you can simultaneously work on the other steps discussed in the video (i.e. trying to expand your network, volunteering if any event is available, working on your interviews, etc).
      As for your age, I get this question a lot. You are fine. Know this, I have mentors and academy brothers that didn't get hired until they were well in their 30's and some in the 40's. It is all about how you prepare to crush the testing process. You have to show up, perform, and prove to the departments why they should hire you.
      DO you have any doubts? If so, what doubts challenge you the most currently?

College... some sites saying I need 4 years, some saying I don’t need anything except English language and maths and some saying I need physics and chemistry along with English and maths. I’m not in school much anyways at the minute so I was just going to try get the English and maths, get into good enough shape and get my EMT then start the training.
    Not 100% what I need. But I know this is what I’m wanting to.

      It's exciting to hear that you have the passion to pursue a fire career.
      Generally speaking, as of now, the education required for an entry level firefighter position is a high school diploma or G.E.D., and an EMT certification.
      There potentially can be departments out there that may require a higher education, but I have yet to see these departments.
      There are many departments out there that require a paramedic license, and some even require a firefighter 1 &/or 2 certification to be eligible for hire.
      It all depends on the specific department you want to work for.
      Focus on enjoying your younger years now, work hard in school, and be consistent in your training/nutrition.
      3 things you can do in the meantime:
      - Try to get involved in the fire service ASAP. Look out for fire explorer or fire cadet programs near you. This will give you direct insight to what the career has to offer.
      - Volunteer at firefighter events. The help is always needed and appreciated
      - Work on your interview skills. The firefighter interview is unlike any other interview. You want to be well prepared for the day you have your official interview. We can discuss more about this on a later date if needed. I will be uploading videos on the topic as well, so stay engaged with the channel so you don't miss it.
      I hope this helps you out Ben. 💪

      - Get out and start building your network with other firefighters, fire departments, and other firefighter candidates. Volunteering at fire departments events is a great way to build your network. This will play a huge role in your overall success.
      - Grab some Firefighter written exam study material and develop a studying schedule.
      - Start developing and practicing your firefighter interview material NOW. The interview is the biggest separator when it comes to fire candidates. The KEY is to know YOURSELF.
      - STAY OUT OF TROUBLE. Slipping in this area can really hurt your chances of earning a firefighter career.
      - The biggest thing is to ENJOY where you are at in life. Stay positive, have fun, and make the most of it. And carry that energy, positivity, and momentum into your future firefighter career.

    Ok so I'm 17 now, I was 16 when I decided to talk to my fire department about a junior program but they didnt have one. They finally decided after a couple months of waiting to allow me to be signed up as an adult and take college classes (Paid for by the department) and I was so excited. I was so excited to pursue this but then I figured out how hard it was having a job, going to college, and going to high school that after about a few courses I got burnt out then I had a family member pass and that broke me. I completely ceased everything including checking in with my department. I slacked in school and I made a lot of dumb choices that I wish I could take back (I never got in trouble with the law just so you know) i finally decided I was messing up my life and so I decided I'd go back to my department which I was not welcomed back with open arms by any means. It was almost as if it felt like I failed them. They definetly didnt like me and now with the coronavirus I'm not allowed back until it's taken care of. I have been running it over and over in my mind like what if I did this different or does everyone hate me because it seems like I gave up or I'm not serious about it. My main fear is that my department hates me and is there anyway I can get back to the way it was. I'm at a department where I'm the youngest by 13 years and sometimes i dont feel like I belong. I know with me not going there it looks like I'm not serious about the fire department but I'm hoping I can change that. I was so dumb for getting burnt out because I felt so stressed even though every fireman probably feels 10x the amount of stress I did. I feel like i came out stronger now since i know for sure it's the career path i wanna take. Do you think i ruined my shot with my department, Is there anyway I can change that especially since I cant go back until the coronavirus is dealt with (Per department rules) and will they ever like me again. I've had people just tell me to wait and once I can go back that everything will straighten itself out but I just dont feel like that's true. Everytime I went to my department and asked questions i felt like i was a burden is that normal? Please help me with some advice sorry if its confusing.
    Thanks,
    Kevin

      @FirefighterAmbitions  4 года назад +4

      First off, sorry for your loss. I’ve recently lost someone special to me as well, so I totally understand the adversity you’re facing.
      To put your entire statement in simple terms, its sounds like you made a mistake(s) and you feel like you aren’t welcome back with your department.
      Quick question: Are you a volunteer/reserve firefighter or are you a fire cadet/explorer?
      Okay to touch on a few points, I want to start off by saying, we all make bad decisions/mistakes my man. It’s what makes us human. It’s what we do with those mistakes that molds us into who we are and what we represent. We aren’t always going to be perfect.
      Just like you, I’m sure several firefighters in your department have done a thing or two in their lives that they aren’t proud of, but it is because of those experiences (and others of course) that led them to where they are today.
      To be honest, the fire service can be brutal. What I mean by this is all it takes is one bad encounter to ruin someone’s entire reputation. People try so hard to get into the fire service, sacrificing a lot along the way because it’s worth it. As you may know thousands of people stand in line for just a handful of spots because it’s worth it. We as firefighters know what it takes to become a career firefighter. We take so much pride in it. When we have people/candidates that come around and don’t respect the traditions and are serious about pursuing the career, it bothers us to the core. With that being said, we also understand that people come to use for education/help/mentorship, and it becomes our task to help guide them and put them on the correct path. We also understand that no one is perfect, and mistakes will happen.
      Long story short, being a firefighter is “WORTH IT.” Fight for what you want. Don’t settle and leave your department with a bad taste in their mouth about you. You have to own your mistakes/decisions and make something out of it. You need to earn the trust and respect back from your crew members at the department (if being there with them truly means something to you). They need to know that your mistakes don’t define you. They need to know and believe that you’ve learned and grown from your mistakes. They need to know that you are a better version of yourself and that you’re 100% committed to them (the team) and 100% committed to your goals of becoming a career firefighter.
      Everybody makes mistakes Kevin. Own yours and make something positive of them. You’d be surprised at how much support you’ll actually get taking this path
      Just know that it is going to take TIME and WORK to gain their trust back, so remain humble and be persistent. 💪
      What is your plan from here on out with your department? What actions are you going to take next?

    • @Hollywood07
      @Hollywood07 4 года назад +1

      @@FirefighterAmbitions appreciate it a lot man but to answer your question I'm a volunteer firefighter. And you made a lot of sense and I never thought of it like that. I did make mistakes and I want to correct them. I hope that they see how much it means to me and i guess I'm just going to have to wait to regain there trust back in me. I will work harder than ever to study and train so that when this virus is gone and I can return. I'll be brushed up enough so if they ask me questions I can give them a proper answer and I haven't just slacked off on my "vacation". What my plans are for my department is when they open back up I'm going to make sure I'm there a minimum of 4 days a week and hopefully ask plenty of questions. I'm going to also head back to college when they open up, I did miss quite a few classes but I'll just have to retake them next season. After I'm certified including my EMT I'd like to work as a volunteer for about a year so I can get some experience under my belt since we run way less calls. After that on to try and get on a career department. I'd love to get tips from you on my journey to become a career firefighter. Hope you make a new video soon but I'm glad that your still very active on here.

    I’m currently in the process of taking the CPAT right now and I’ve gone through my first orientation. I’ve always wanted to do this as soon as I had gotten out of college, I was just wondering if it matters which order I get the certifications in whether it be CPAT first or EMT first?

    • @FirefighterAmbitions
      @FirefighterAmbitions  4 года назад +1

      Be careful with taking the CPAT route first. There are departments out there that only accept valid CPAT certs in a specific time frame (I.e. within 6months of testing) so if you take the CPAT and don’t test before 6 months, your CPAT can become invalid for that specific departments testing process. Now if you take your EMT first and you have the other minimum requirements ( firefighterambitions.com/become-a-firefighter) you can become eligible to start testing with the fire departments you qualify for. So when you begin applying for open firefighter positions you can simultaneously go out and get your CPAT (per the job application requirements). That way you have more tome to utilize that CPAT cert before it expires. I hope this is making sense. If not let me know and I can try to reformulate my response 😂 You can take any route you want. Many roads lead to a firefighter position. For the most part, I personally recommend getting your EMT first 💪🏼

      Yes, not all specifics about hiring practices will be 100% the same across all fire departments. They have the ability and right to conduct their own unique hiring practices.
      That is why I'm a huge advocate to educate our community members about researching into the specific fire departments they plan on pursuing, so there is no surprises.
      When it comes to the overall testing process performance, preparation for the most part will be similar. You will/may have a physical, a written, interviews, and potentially a pre-academy (depending on the department), so it is vital that candidates like yourself do their best to prepare well in advance; working on their skills DAILY.
      Do you have your EMT already?

      @gavint4634 3 года назад +1

      No not quite there yet. But about the physical part of it. They allow you to hire a fdny academy trainer that get you prepared. The only thing I'm worried about when it comes to all of this is being able to afford living there and actually like follow through with it. because it's been my dream my hole life. And when it comes times to prepare and stuff. It gets scary because the thing you wanted for your hole life is in your hands. And I know is a very realistic and doable dream. But still scary

      Be sure to do your research. Many Departments out there have some sort of EMS component to them requiring an EMT at a minimum to be eligible for hire. You have to do your research and find departments out there that offer what you are looking for. Some departments out there have a separate fire and ems division within the organization, but typically many of those departments hire from within their ems division to their fire division. With that being said there have been external hires before

I've made really good connections with my local fire stations, and my dream-station (Farmington, Missouri Fire Department). I've done a couple department tours, and I go to church with the fire chief and two of the captains. I've already completed one summer of a fire cadet program, and I wanted to ask if there was more I could do at my age to help me become a dedicated firefighter in really any Missouri fire department? Nice. It sounds like you are headed in the right direction. Keep growing your network like you are. It'll come in handy when you're eligible to test.
      My best advice for you would be to:
      - Focus on your education and work hard to get great grades
      - Continue to learn about the career/job of a firefighter
      - Continue to grow your network (meet other firefighters, fire candidates, and visit other fire departments)
Begin Studying firefighter written exam material now, Work on your firefighter interview DAILY.
      - Begin to build a resume (be sure to continually add updates to it)
      - STAY OUT OF TROUBLE (of course 😊)
      - HAVE FUN (responsibly). You are in a great time in your life that you cant get back. Be sure to live it to the fullest and enjoy yourself.
      The list can go on, but these are some of the top points I wanted to make

    Hi Markell, Great video! I am interested in the career path and doing as much research as possible right now. One thing i don't understand is the process of getting onto a department. I am a college grad with a bachelors degree in an unrelated field. I have a friend who had his lottery number called (Chicago dept.) and he was brought right into the academy to start without an EMT cert or any other kind of cert's that i've heard mentioned. Do I need to get my EMT cert on my own through school or should I try to get onto a dept which will train me?

    • @FirefighterAmbitions
      @FirefighterAmbitions  4 года назад +1

      Hey Patrick, apologies for the late response. Hope the holidays have been going well for you.
      But I totally get where you are at, I remember being there. The confusion got the best of me at times lol
      But there are fire departments out there that don't require you to have an EMT, firefighter 1 & 2, etc to be eligible for hire. I personally tested with a department in Arizona like that.
      My video is speaking generally on behalf of many career fire departments out there. Generally an EMT is the minimum requirement to be eligible for most firefighters positions.
      With that being said there are fire departments out there that require more (i.e. firefighter 1 & 2 cert, EMT cert, Paramedic cert, etc)
      Certain requirements all depends on the specific fire department you are testing for.
      As for the EMT, yes you would have to go through an accredited EMT program yourself to get your EMT certification (unless you test and get hired with a fire department that doesn't require it prior to hire like your friends department did in Chicago. What department was that by the way?)
      And congratulations on obtaining your BA or BS, that is HUGE. I took the same path and got my degree first then pursued fire.
      As for your degree not being directly related to the fire field, it's all good. Your degree is going to open more doors for you. There are fire departments out there that offer what they call "preference points" also known as bonus points for candidates that have higher education degrees and/or military experience. Meaning if you are neck in neck with another candidate in the testing process with similar scores fighting for a spot in the department, you will beat he/she for the spot when the preference points gets added to your overall testing score (testing score meaning overall score throughout the entire testing process).
      Not only that, having your degree and experiencing the college grind gives you more to talk about come interview time. That life experience is invaluable, so hats off to you
      To answer your question of : "Do I need to get my EMT cert on my own through school or should I try to get onto a dept which will train me?"
      ** I honestly say if time and money is truly a problem for you, then testing for departments that don't require it would be a decent route to take. Just know that if you go this route you're really limiting yourself. Remember this, opportunities to test for fire departments don't come as often as a normal job, so if those departments that don't require anything holds a 2+ year hiring list and you just missed the testing process, then you have to wait 2+ years to even have an opportunity to test.
      On the other hand, if you have the time and can pay for school, do it. It will open many more doors for you. If you acquire the minimum qualifications necessary to become a firefighter you can test anywhere that you are eligible for while still testing for those departments that don't require anything.
      And here's the beauty of it, say you tested for 5 different departments roughly in the same time period, and you did well enough to make it through each departments testing process. You have now increased your odds of getting hired. There's nothing better than having multiple offers coming in at the same time, allowing you to choose what your heart desires.
      What I'm trying to tell you is, don't limit yourself. Start testing now for what you're eligible for and start to acquire the general certs you'll need for most fire departments in the mean time. ("mean time" meaning on the off periods of waiting for open opportunities to test)
      Keep the questions coming my man, let me know what you need.
      I hope this helps.

      Try not to overwhelm yourself too much. EMT school is totally doable. Plus, the instructors (typically can be firefighters) and your future fellow classmates are there to help you along the way. Of course it's going to take effort and discipline from you to be successful.

      If it helps, I graduated from EMT school in September I struggled so much in high school so I was worried too but I passed, when you really want something you’ll do your best, it really just comes down to studying and being friends with your class mates and working together.
      Also with all do respect this field involves a lot of hoops to jump through so you really can’t afford to have a fear mentality because EMT school is just the start
      Also another thing to consider is even if you “fail” along the way it’s not really a total fail because no matter what point you got to, there’s always a career there. Some people go to EMT school to become a fire fighter then find out while they are there that they much rather be a paramedic or a nurse or just stay an EMT and all those careers are rewarding.
      Good luck and remember it’s better to try and fail then to never have tried at all 👍🏼

    • @FirefighterAmbitions
      @FirefighterAmbitions  3 года назад +1

      A college degree is HUGE. it isn't a requirement at the moment but it definitely looks great and shows that you are a committed individual. Plus outside of earning your degree, you gain life experience (which we highly value), you gain relationships (networking), an so on, which gives you more to talk about in your future firefighter interview(s).
      GPA should matter, especially to you. But in regards to the fire service, for the most part we only require you to have a high school diploma or G.E.D. You having that already, you've already checked off that requirement box. Push yourself to crush it in the GPA area though. 💪
      And yes, you will see some things that you wish you hadn't. Things that you can't quite get out of your head sometimes. Some see more than others depending on where you get hired and where you are stationed. But for the most part we all see and engage in some rough incidents throughout our careers. It isn't all the time, but it could be, so you have to really know if firefighting is something you truly have the passion to do. We utilize our personal coping techniques, our crew/department members, our families, and internal/external resources to help us through the struggles of our careers. You will have the same support throughout your career, if you allow yourself to.
      A firefighter career is truly a great one. It comes with its fault like any other career, but truly offers more than most in the happiness/fulfillment area.
      What degree are you pursuing?

I want to become a firefighter once im out, and not sure which exact route to take. I know it depends on the fire station, but I dont have a particular one im going for (my general idea is Colorado, Idaho, California, Arizona). I am able to get a bachelors degree before im out, and I saw any bachelors degree will help. Is that true? or is there any degree I can get to help me get hired? (I can only do online classes, part time too). Also, since I get my GI bill, which route would you suggest for me? Fire school? EMT? Both? Paramedic and fire? Fireschool, EMT, & volunteer? Try to get an internship? I also have the potential to be able to volunteer for a local fire station part time on top of my military career (not 100% if I can yet). What if I did this for only a short period of time? Would this be worth it since I can go to school for "free" anyways? If you know 100% for sure that you want to become a career structural firefighter for a city department, then start by going to get your EMT. Once you get that you will become eligible to test for most departments out there.
      As for a bachelors degree, you can get whatever you're interesting in. Most degree fields can translate into atleast one aspect of the fire service (communication, leadership, medical/science, psychology, sociology, etc). A degree in general makes you more marketable, but it doesn't guarantee you a job. Some departments out there offer preference points for degrees and military experience so look into that as well.

      Thanks for reaching out Steven.
      And yes, I personally typically recommend that candidates like yourself get your EMT first/right away. That way you can become eligible to test (that is if you have all the other minimum requirements).
      Once you pass the EMT program and you pass the NREMT, get your state EMT license and start applying for the career fire departments you desire and qualify for.
      While you are doing that, try to simultaneously test and volunteer if it fits your schedule.
      It is a heck of a commitment, but it can help you gain experience, help grow your network, help prepare you for the testing process (due to help from your firefighter network), all while still putting your name in the hat to test for hire.
      Be sure that you can maintain a steady income (unless you have the benefit of staying home with family) and maintain healthy relationships with your family/friends. It can be easy to get lost in the grind.
      Be sure to sit them all down and let them know what you have to do be reach your goals. And be sure that they are all on board to help you in any way they can.

      Firefighter Ambitions well i was seeing that a degree in fire science would benefit me down the road, is it required just like the EMT?

    • @FirefighterAmbitions
      @FirefighterAmbitions  4 года назад +1

      @@argueta7231 No it is not required.
      But pursuing a fire science associates degree can help you get some fire classes that may be required for future promotional opportunities within your department.
      For example, I had to get
      - Fire tactics and strategies
      - Building construction
      - Fire apparatus and Hydraulics
      to be eligible to test and promote to engineer within my department.
      So for your case, if you do pursue a fire science degree, you can/will take these classes and more that can help with your certifications and help you gain experience, knowledge, and it will also help build your network.
      Also if you plan on attending a firefighter 1&2 academy, most programs require prerequisites, so pursuing a fire science degree can help you become eligible. 💪
      Long story short, it wouldn't hurt to pursue a fire science Associates.
      I personally pursued kinesiology and ended up getting my bachelors degree in sociology because it fit with my sports schedule.
      If you want to pursue a fire degree, go for it my man. 😊

    • @FirefighterAmbitions
      @FirefighterAmbitions  4 года назад +1

      @@xboi1227 It only benefits you to properly prepare for the written exam and to score as high as you can.
      Many departments out there score their entire testing process accumulatively. So, if your weakness is the written exam, you have the other phases of the testing process to help increase your overall score.
      ❗️*Note when I say weakness, i don't mean you will score low, i mean if out of all of the other phases of the testing process, the written exam is the most challenging for you, don't let it get you too worked up because if you at least have the minimum written exam score required to advance in the process, you'll have the opportunity to do better and score higher in the other phases, thus increasing your overall score❗️
      Let me explain further, Hypothetically speaking, lets say Department Alpha requires that you score at least an 80% to advance on to the next phase of the testing process. Lets say you scored an 82%, while most candidates scored in the 85-87% range. Although you are on the lower end of the scale you still have the other phases of the testing process to increase your overall score (i.e. interviews, potential pre-academies, CPAT [I tested for a department that conducted their CPAT at their academy as a third phase in their testing process. Their testing process was conducted as such, Phase 1: written exam, phase 2: first interview, phase 3: CPAT, phase 4: second interview or "chiefs interview." As you can see there were several opportunities to increase my score if I had scored on the lower end).
      ❗️*Side note: if you have a bachelors degree or higher, or military experience, many departments offer "preference points" also seen as bonus points, that can be added to your overall testing score❗️
      In this hypothetical scenario, lets say the testing process you're in only has the pass/fail CPAT phase, the written exam phase, and two interviews. Lets say you out perform the rest of the candidates and receive a 98% on your interviews, while the others scored in 88-92% range. You've just put your self back in the running for the tops of the candidate ranks.
      ... Now if you have the required certs for the "preference points" like I listed above, now you just moved yourself to the top of the ranks guaranteeing yourself a spot in the department (that is of course you pass backgrounds and the rest of their requirements).
      Simply put, what I'm trying to say is, do your best in every phase. To do your best you must prepare way ahead of time on your interview skills, written exam skills, fitness, and networking (meeting firefighters showing them what you have to offer the department).
      Specifically talking about the written exam, I recommend that you take focused daily action with you written exam studying. Truly make it a habit to review some written exam material everyday. That way you aren't cramming come actual test date (i personally started by studying 20-25 questions a day and then increased that amount the closer I got to an opportunity to test)
      Here are some topics you want to focus on:
      1) Basic math
      2) Mechanical aptitude
      3) Reading comprehension
      4) Personality/human relations
      5) Memory/visualization
      6) Etc.
      This will be a good starting point for you to develop a cache of written exam material.
      Check out this article that briefly covers what to expect in the firefighter written exam:

    Some departments here locally don’t require Fire certs to apply. They will pay for the academy once hired.
    Question: Is the $4,000 investment for the a self sponsored route for the Fire Certs prior to applying going to create a significant “standing out” in comparison to other candidates, or is having an EMT license alone enough to be competitive?

    • @FirefighterAmbitions
      @FirefighterAmbitions  3 года назад +1

      Yes, some departments don't require those certs. The departments I applied for didn't require any firefighter 1 &/or 2 certifications to be eligible for hire. One of those departments didn't even require an EMT. I tested, had gotten selected, and they put me through their own fire academy. (this is a possible route you can take as well)
      As for your question, it depends on your own goals. If you have the time/resources to do so, then why not. I recommend testing as soon as possible though (meaning when you're 100% ready to commit to the grind of the recruitment process). Get the minimum requirements necessary to test and get out there and start testing. Work on other certifications simultaneously (it can be rough at times but is totally doable). Who knows you may get picked up before you begin your other certs.
      With that being said, of course investing in yourself is vital and having those fire certs can make you more marketable, while opening many more opportunities to test with other fire departments that require them. Plus, going through and acquiring your fire certs gives you more experience relative to the field (giving you more interview material, which can be helpful come interview day). Plus you further expand your network with other firefighters and fire candidates teaching the courses and going through the fire programs with you as well.
      With all that being said, it depends on the candidate. If you have a candidate that has all the certifications in the world, but cannot perform during the testing process, the certs become merely interesting. On the other hand if you have a candidate that has the minimum requirements eligible to test, that is a good individual, fits the mold of the department, and crushes every phase of the testing process, they are more likely to be hired compared to that of the other candidate.
      Think of it this way, we can train someone to be a firefighter, we cannot train someone to be a loyal, selfless, hardworking teammate, and an overall GOOD person.
      It all totally depends on the individual candidate. If they have all the certs in the world, crush the testing process, and fits the mold of that specific fire department they will have a higher chance of being selected than that of a candidate that has/does lesser.
      Simply put, if you properly prepare for the testing process and crush it, you can definitely pass up other candidates that have more certs than you
      I hope this makes sense. Let me know if I need to clarify further 💪

      If the department you are pursing doesn't require you to have an EMT license to be eligible for hire, then awesome go test when you're 100% ready.
      I'm assuming that they must run their own EMT program throughout their fire academy right?
      As for your second question, having your EMT is HUGE. It opens more opportunity for yourself (i.e. testing for more departments that require an EMT, become a more skilled public servant, etc).
      EMS is over 90% of the job of a firefighter. Most career departments require their firefighters to have at least an EMT license. There are many departments out there that are requiring their firefighters to have their paramedic license as well.

      Hey Elitee Skii,
      First off, early congratulations on your success in school.
      The career of a firefighter is definitely a solid route to take. I'm glad that you have interest in dedicating your life to making a difference and helping others.
      As for the worries you have about succeeding at becoming a firefighter, try not to let it worry you too much, it is totally normal (especially in the stage you're at).
      We've all had our worries at one point in time along our journey to becoming a firefighter.
      The fact that you are actively seeking answers is a GREAT start. You'd be surprised at how many people wont even do that.
      I must say, at first things seem very confusing and foggy, but the further you dive into the pursuit of this career the clearer things will become (*I will explain this further in our future conversations*).
      As for talking to a firefighter, I will be a resource for you as long as you need me. But I definitely always recommend that you go and set up a station visit or ride-a-long with your local fire department. With this you can start to network with firefighters and other candidates pursuing the career like yourself. Also this is where you begin to build a reputation for yourself.
      Every time you interact with a firefighter, think of it like an interview. From the time they know that you want to be a firefighter till the time you become a sworn firefighter, you will be analyzed and judged, so make sure that you are always on your best behavior.
      To schedule a ride-a-long or station visit, contact your local fire department, fire administration, or city and ask what their policy is to schedule a visit.
      *Note: before you go on a ride-a-long or station visit, be sure to reach out to me so we can discuss a few things that you'll need to prepare for*
      As for EMT school, it is totally doable. It will definitely be challenging at times, but you have to find a way to push through the grind. The best general advice I can give you is:
      - Develop great study habits now
      - If possible, grab the book ahead of time and dive right in to get alil exposure prior to school (be sure to check in with the EMT program you pursue and make sure that the book isn't already included in the tuition cost. You definitely don't want to buy two books)
      Here's the link if you do purchase it:
      amzn.to/2Ph0mTA
      - Be sure to check out our EMT/NREMT skills videos to familiarize yourself with whats to come. Check out the link below:
      firefighterambitions.com/emt-videos
      - Be sure to network with other classmates (this will be a huge part of your success, BE A GOOD TEAMMATE)
      - Don't be afraid to ask questions (You will not only be helping yourself. Im sure others may have the same questions you'll have)
      - *BONUS: be sure to always be on your best behavior. A lot of these EMT programs are instructed by firefighters or EMS personnel that have access and/or connections to firefighters. If you are a stellar student you'd definitely be increasing your odds at landing a career. If you are a horrible person/student, then they will definitely remember you and words travel fast. You definitely don't want to ruin your reputation in this career. You'll be failing yourself before you even begin*
      I can tell you from personal experience as a firefighter and EMT evaluator, we remember the solid students but we DEFINITELY remember the not so good ones. lol
      Have you looked at any EMT programs to sign up for yet?
      We are here to help you along your process to becoming a firefighter. So be sure to stay engaged because we have more content coming that will add value to you and your journey to the job.

    Hello, I am entering my junior year in high school and I am around 280 pounds and 6’4 feet in height, I’m worried about not being fit enough to pass the tests and be able to compete with my competition, do you have any advice to help me achieve my dream job?( firefighter )

    • @FirefighterAmbitions
      @FirefighterAmbitions  4 года назад +2

      Almost there, graduation will come sooner than you think. My advice for you is to develop and stick to a strict fitness regimen. Incorporate several training styles into your program (I.e. bodyweight training, resistance training, interval training (also HIIT training), LISS training, cross training ( circuit training , superset training , tri-set training, etc), and perform firefighter specific skilled events (I.e. tire drags, stair climb/sprints, tire strikes, etc.). Most importantly you want to make healthy nutrition a LIFESTYLE. 9/10 times make the right food and drink choices. Your body is your greatest asset/tool. You must allow your body the chance to perform for you, so come test day, you’re ready to crush it. I hope this helps 💪🏼

      its exclusively in the becoming a firefighter program now. There are audio/video tutorials walking you through the interview process step by step. If you haven't done so yet. enroll in my free program first and see what your needs are. I don't recommend you paying for anything unless you truly feel you need more support. Glad you've found the video helpful.
      As for your age and it being too late for you, no way!
      You are in a great spot. The sooner you can earn a spot the better (it is a 25+ year career). I've just recently had the pleasure of getting a phone call from one of my students that got "THE CALL," (meaning gotten hired) from one of his favorite departments and he's 21 years old.
      Let me tell you, being on the younger side and getting hired is a true blessing/honor. I turned 24 when I was hired and that was considered being on the younger side of recruits compared to that of previous fire classes.
      I had academy brothers well in their 30's and early 40's, so that should paint a picture for you.
      You are in a great spot 💪
      Where are you at with everything regarding the recruitment process?

      @@chentz7744 Its not a bad thing at all. I didn't graduate from college till I was 22, then I started to pursue fire right after. You're already ahead of where I was fire wise. You are in a great spot.
      Stay engaged with the content I put out and start to check off the boxes one by one. You'll be surprised at how fast things come together for you. Plus you'll have my support and resources to aid you through your process, which is light years ahead of what I had when I started. YOU GOT THIS!

    • @FirefighterAmbitions
      @FirefighterAmbitions  3 года назад +1

      Start with EMT school. Many times you'll meet firefighter instructors or personnel that have access to firefighters and fire departments.
      You'll be tackling multiple things at once; getting your EMT and networking.
      Where do you wish to work in the near future?

      Your experience/contributions in the military does come with some power. You have to obtain the minimum requirements, you have to be a solid person, and you must perform well throughout the firefighter testing process.
      Your military experience is HUGE. It shows that you understand what it means to belong to something bigger than yourself, you understand the importance of the team, you understand the chain of command, you know to follow and execute orders, and so much more.
      There are many departments out there that offer military preference points as well. This means that you can get additional “bonus points” at the conclusion of your testing processes that can really help boost your score, separate you from others, and potentially help land you a job.
      I must reiterate, you have to still perform well.
      Thank you for what you do.
      I hope this helps

    I dont understand how do I start going about it ? I'm 25 and an automotive technician, have been for the past 5 years. Except I only have my high school diploma . Do I need to take an ems course and then fire academt , or vice versa? Do I pay for the ems course

    • @FirefighterAmbitions
      @FirefighterAmbitions  3 года назад +2

      Yes go apply for an EMT program available to you. Yes it will cost you to take the course. Prices vary between the different EMT programs.
      Depending on where you wish to work in the near future will dictate what certifications you'll need.
      For example, if you wish to work for a department that only requires an EMT license to be eligible for hire, then all you'll need is just that (an EMT license).
      Now on the other hand, if you wish to work for a department that requires candidates to have their paramedic license, or firefighter 1 &/or 2 certification, or both, then you'll have to set out to obtain those through further schooling.
      It all depends on what department you'll be pursuing.
      I tend to recommend candidates go get their EMT and start testing ASAP (meaning, as soon as they are 100% ready to commit to the testing process).
      You can obtain further certifications and education simultaneously while you're testing for departments (that is of course if your schedule allows for it).
      Does this help?

      I’d reach out to the national registry & the fire departments you plan on testing for and see what they have to say about the topic. That’ll be the best way to get the answer to your question

    • @FirefighterAmbitions
      @FirefighterAmbitions  3 года назад +2

      Absolutely. I know times are a little challenging lately, but once departments open their facilities back up to the community for potential station visits and ride-a-longs, then you definitely should start to network with firefighters and fire departments in your area.
      Reach out now and see what information you can gather. Maybe your local FD's have some resources that you can utilize and get involved with.
