Most insulation lets radiant heat pass through. A good portion of your heat loss is through radiant heat. Night vision cameras are made to see this heat coming from a body. If you use a reflective material like a space blanket over your tent you will be much warmer. It will bounce back the radiant heat that you are losing.

    • @ModernDayPilgrim
      @ModernDayPilgrim  9 месяцев назад +49

Thanks for watching! Interesting you should say that about the space blanket, I was looking up all those types of blankets when I was brainstorming on how to build this tent. My initial thought was those emergency blankets that retain heat, essentially a space blanket, but they didn’t have the higher size I needed to drape over my bed. That was exactly my thought though. 😃💯💯🙌🏼 thanks for taking the time to comment! Have a fantastic weekend!😃🙌🏼💯

Absolutely what I’ve been preaching. The folks that were dying in Texas from the freezing would have survived in a home, especially with family members, all sleeping in a small space. Using an insulated sleeping pad and perhaps throwing in an electric blanket for 15 minutes before going to sleep is helpful. Also a hot drink before bed, as well as light activity will warm you before getting into bed. Stay away from cotton and sweating, cuz it’s going to make you really cold. Pro tip: pack the clothes you’re going to wear the next day into the bottom of the sleeping bag so they are warm when you put them on.

That’s a great idea! I know for a fact it will work I live in a tent for 1 1/2 years and I built a wooden structure inside the tent as large as a tent would allow and hung quilted blankets on each side. I slept very cozy with a hoodie., sleeping bag, an extra blanket in 17°, ice storms, and snow storms. I was in my 60s and stayed very comfortable while sleeping. Now I sleep in a 12 x 28 cottage and heat it was a woodstove but it’s still not as warm as my little quilted-lined tent.

And u have to consider the draft under the cot

    Extra insulation
Around and under (I close around the cot with blankets )then I use
    A sleeping system that backpackers
    Use:
    1 Windshield Reflecting mat first
    2. Accordion mat
    3. Sleeping pad
Then my 10 degree sleeping bag
    Then
    Sleeping bag cover.
    Wool blanket and wool socks

I really appreciate everyone who takes the time to add information, tips, and tricks that they use. You’re absolutely correct, insulating underneath yourself is very, very important. Love the idea of using a windshield reflectix! On my cut, I have a 3 inch dense foam mattress. A lot of people don’t like them, because they retain heat in the summertime. But they are great for the winter! And I don’t mind them in summer, either, I just put a sheet over it and it’s not that big a problem for me. Once again, thanks for stopping by! Add mylar blankets (two taped together, tape doesn't come off) on top of the blankets and it'll keep all the heat in. They are dirt cheap, I get them on walmart online ordering, I was getting 20 for $16.00, but I just searched and found them as 8 for $7, which is still pretty great.
Don't put them next to your skin or just over the 1st blanket, mylar will trap moisture in, you'll wake up wet --- put on outside of sleeping bag or on top of blankets with a another blanket over to hold the mylar down.

I put it under my mattress and plugged it into my solar generator. It's an off brand, said it was a 800w but acts more like a 500w. It ran the heating pad for 9 hours and kept me warm enough and I only had one comforter on top. If it had been colder I would have needed something else producing heat and some insulation in the my full size van would have helped too

There are little 200w heaters too that you could hook to your battery. It would easily heat that area in your tent in a few minutes.
    Home Depot sells them.

Thanks for watching! Maybe I’ll pick one up and see how it works! If it has an intermittent setting, that may work well! But if it’s a little heater that runs continually, that would not work very well. I appreciate you taking the time to comment! I have a fantastic day!🙌🏼😃💯

Having a tent in the livingroom during a winter power grid failure is often suggested, so why not a tent over the cot/bed. Last weekend I was refolding some moving blankets that were freebies from harbor freight wondering if I could use one as temporary insulation along the driver’s side of my cargo minivan (the bed is behind the driver’s seat, but I don’t go in/out through that sliding door & use the passenger slider or rear barn doors instead). Bet I could hang it with S hooks & magnets tucked into the seam along the long side. Now I’ll have to think how to make it into a tent.

Thanks for watching! I looked into those! I wasn’t quite sure if I wanted to purchase one just to make the video. But I did research all kinds of emergency blankets. The problem was none of them were big enough in size to drape over the bed. My other thought was that Mylar might be noisy one moved. That would be an issue for me. I appreciate you taking the time to come in! Have a fantastic weekend!😃💯🙌🏼

When it got super cold out, I put one of these moving blankets on the bed at home. The end bedroom gets pretty cold and that moving blanket holds the heat in and blocks air coming in(I run a box fan year round). Got mine cheap at Harbor Freight when they were on sale.

I live in a 1970 something travel trailer, completely off grid with a little solar. The insulation is pretty nonexistent and normally winter where I am in a rural area is around 40 during the day and 20 something at night, often with wind. The best thing I’ve found for staying warm at night is a goose down comforter and a baklava. I have the windows covered with insulation as well. I used to freeze and had to use 3-4 heavy blankets. Now I find that with just the down comforter and head covering, I get too hot!

There are rechargeble battery heated socks, jackets, and blankets.
So don't forget that they are an option.
I have a pair of these socks and they keep my feet warm while im working up in the mountains on rebuilding an old mobile home.
I turn the heat on the high setting for 20 minutes to get my feet good and warm. Then turn the heat down to setting 2 . That keeps my feet warm for over 6 hours. By then the sun has warmed up the mobile.
I also found 2 really thick blankets at the GoodWill for $10 bucks. I sleep in my truck sometimes when working on the mobile home. Saves on hotel room costs. That blanket keeps me so warm i wake up sweating sometimes in low 20 degree night temps.
But i bought an electric blanket and hook that up to my Bluetti power station and that keeps me warm at night also. So the thick blanket is put away for now.

I'm sure your camping out in the wild, you must have a small propane stove that you cook on. Just an FYI, you can get your self a hot water bottle, fill it up with hot water heated on your little cooking stove and place it at the foot of your sleeping bag and it'll keep you quite warm for a good 6 to 8 hours while you sleep. I use to live in a cold apartment where the walls weren't insulated. My mother had made me a comforter and she stitched some sort of insulation in it and that's what I use to do in the winter time. I would fill a hot water bottle with hot water from the tap and place it under the covers at the foot of the bed and my bed was toasty warm all night. it could work just as well in your sleeping bag.

I'm not sure if you crack a window to get fresh air and to expel body moisture. The furniture blanket's reflective surface should help keep the tent warm . Make sure you air the blanket every day because it will absorb your body moisture and take on fungus among us. I'm not sure what temperature zone you are in, but you should be comfortable to close to 10 F.

I hope you have noticed some ladies who are solo van people have an Amazon front or a wish list I’d like for to consider it. Also Walmart will work. You can list items you are in need of or want to make van life a little easier. I’ve noticed people respond well. I might suggest setting up a cash account or a Venmo account so if peopled would like to help you out financially. I hope this helps you are a delight to watch.

An emergency bivvy, made of mylar with a plastic coating on one side could replace the moving pad and is much lighter in weight. The floor of the bivvy could be placed under the sleeping bags helping to retain body heat and also removing the draft from the floor causing cold air from entering the tent.

I love this idea. My only concern is the sun visor tie point. I would try putting a rope between the front doors, maybe you've been around the roof, and attaching the tie point to the rope, that might work... I'm just concerned about damaging the vehicle sun visor.
