    Paroles:
"I left my love, my love I left a sleepin' in her bed.
I turned my back on my true love when fightin' Johnny Reb.
I left my love a letter in the hollar of a tree.
I told her she would find me, in the US Cavalry.
Hi-Yo! Down they go, there's no such word as can't.
We're riding down to hell and back for Ulysses Simpson Grant.
Hi-Yo! Down they go, there's no such word as can't.
We're riding down to hell and back for Ulysses Simpson Grant.
I left my love, my love I left a sleepin' in her bed.
I turned my back on my true love when fightin' Johnny Reb.
I left my love a letter in the hollar of a tree.
I told her she would find me, in the US Cavalry, in the US Cavalry.
Hi-Yo! Down they go, there's no such word as can't.
We're riding down to hell and back for Ulysses Simpson Grant."

A lot of commenters don't even realize that the movie was about the Civil War not the Indian Wars. This is a Union Cavalry raid in Mississippi helping Grant take Vicksburg, not a fight against the Sioux. There surely are a lot of dopes on the internet.

Grierson's Raid April May 1863. 600 mile in 16 days Destruction of large quantities of Confederate Cotton, Railroad Equipment, and other military Goods. Avoided Major encounters with Rebel Troops,
although a large number were chasing them.
Grierson, who from a young age, disliked horses, after the War, founded and commanded the Black cavalry units ( 9&10th) known as " Buffalo Soldiers " in the Southwest Indian Wars.
Black Jack Pershing served under him, after leaving West Point.

But it was much more. Grierson's raid helped fend of reinforcements to Vicksburg *and* capture the nearby capital of Jackson, permanently crippling Mississippi's usefulness for the rest of the war, and he accomplished it with only 19 casualties total.
Grierson himself would go on to face the revered Nathan B. Forrest and beat him at Tupelo, before capturing his dismounted cavalry in Verona.
Put simply, Ben Grierson is a legend.

Sorry but no comparison between real horse cavalry and the modern version with helicopters, vehicles, digital communications and creature comforts. The US Cavalrymen of the 1800s were truly heroic and could put up with constant hardships that most people today cannot grasp.

The funny thing is not one Horse Soldier ever rode singing this song unless in one of the ceremonial troops or reenactor's group. Stan Jones the writer of this song and "Ghost Riders in the Sky" played Grant at the start of this film. Yes, my nickname comes mostly from the song not the silly movie or comic book, Ghost is a play on my real name.

Cavalry is a mission description. I was an armor crewmen 19E, then K...hardships galore.
Sometimes I was in a cavalry unit. Others, armor.
    Same horse/tank. Different missions.
And I suppose a 150 years from now, we'll be those tough cowboys.
Man! They say. How'd they live...

From the first "official" US Cavalry unit formed in 1776, through the last mounted horse cavalry charge in 1942, to today's mechanized and air cavalry, American cavalrymen have always used songs to help bind themselves together to survive and honor their exploits. This song was written for a movie, but riding to hell and back for Ulysses Simpson Grant was only a parable for this period. Previous generations rode to hell and back for George Washington, Winfield Scott, Samuel Walker, Jack Hays, William Sherman (and Robert E. Lee), Teddy Roosevelt, John J. Pershing, Ed Ramsey (who commanded the last mounted pistol charge in 1942)…. and my grandfather, Capt. A. B. McDonald, 11th Cavalry, in WWI. But we should remember that our very first cavalry unit was created by a Polish officer (Casimir Pulaski), patterned after European mounted units, and formed to combat British dragoons. Many other nations, especially Britain, Germany, Poland and Russia, have a long and proud history of their dragoon/cavalry units, and they also honor the songs and traditions of their men. Last, remember that Custer's 7th Cavalry's famous theme, Garry Owen, is in reality an Irish drinking song. Many people have many opinions, but history is fact. Look it all up, and then honor the men who rode horses (and later machines) into battle as United States Cavalrymen.

I consider everyone born in the united states, canada, Mexico, etc. To all be native Americans regardless of color.
Because if we were to actually go by where our ancestors are from, no one would be a native American, englishman scottish etc. we'd all be Africans.
Why can't we just all come to the conclusion that we are all Americans regardless of color or ancestry and play nice? Is our history spotless? No but neither is anybody else's. Hopefully we can some day be truly united.

@@tonirk5122 You just hate America. General Custer fought with his 300 soldiers and lost in the battle of the Little Big Horns of 3,000 Indians, for you and the other Anti-Americans, General Custer was coward, and the Indians are heroes for you. The damn bastards would only fight the Americans if the Americans attacked them because of the Indian massacres of White Civil Americans. It was a war, not a child's play, you can't fight, and after you lose, say "Wait, there were more soldiers on the enemy side than on ours." You should stay home with that way of thinking. Oh yes, you stayed home.

    • @tonirk5122

    • @tonirk5122
      @tonirk5122 3 года назад

    • @tonirk5122
      @tonirk5122 3 года назад

German Americans have a long rich history in this country. Just as Irish, Scottish, and English do.
      They are America.

@Rikki0 You Northerners war was illegal by the Articles of Confederation. Lincoln knew this. In 1863 he issued the Emancipation Proclamation to try to give legitimacy to his war and to keep Britain from joining the South. But it only freed the slaves in the South. The North still had legal slavery until November of 1865 with the passage of the 13th Amendment. Most Northern states had already freed their slaves because it was no longer profitable. But it was still legal.

@ARP7777777 No, the song specifically mentions Ulysses Simpson Grant, which is why I referenced him and not the other war criminals like Sherman, Sheridan, Butler, etc. Thanks

How can I enjoy this song when I despise Ulysses Simpson Grant and the whole Yankee army that invaded my homeland and laid my Confederate nation low? Yet I enjoy the song immensely. Must be John Wayne!

Jefferson Davis offered to free all slaves if Lincoln would let us secede peacefully. He was refused. 78% of the national economy came from taxes from the South. Lincoln could not let us go because the Northern economy would have collapsed. We did not have equal representation in congress. We had the right to secede by the Articles of Confederation. "If I thought for one second this war was being fought over slavery I would join the other side this minute. U.S. Grant
