    Beautiful work you've done on your clocks, John. You couldn't pick a more worthy example to build than one of Harrison's wooden clocks, which are technological marvels. That man had true genius.

    Wood is actually a very good choice of material as proven by the accuracy and longevity of his clocks.

    Unfortunately "John Harrison’s Contrivance" is no longer available on Google or anywhere else on planet Earth. Do you still have an electronic copy? A shame it will be lost to history.

      @@john2478 thats a great shame. im getting ready to build my own mechanism. not a copy of a Harrison design but i am using lignum vite from wooden bowls and im looking for good sources of how to atchaly construct wooden gear wheals. a rather scaresly written about topic it would seem. im making with hand tools only bar a hand crank drill press so methods like youv used to construct your wheels are very labor intensive for my tool capabilities. would you be willing to send me a copy if its rely not available anywhere no problem if not many thanks. or do you know of any other good sources of this kind of information?? thanks

    wonderful! Have you read the biography Longitude?

    • @john2478
      @john2478  3 года назад

      Yes but this is rather in the style of a novel rather than an academic work. Unfortunately most of the really detailed books on Harrison only have very limited circulation and become unobtainable. John Harrison made such a mark on Horology because of being clever and well educated and lived a very long life for the era. This made it possible for him to refine and redesign his clocks and not be afraid to start again. It was amazing that the large pocket watch he designed ended up being more practical and the ultimate naval timekeeper.
      The wooden clocks are often overlooked or just passed over in books on John Harrison when they were all the more remarkable for accuracy at the time. It is great that there are a number of survivors for us all to see as well as the great brass marine clocks and watches. Harrison left a treasure trove of papers when he died which have survived so his thinking as well as the clocks themselves still exist. It was not just an accident that he succeeded in his quest in obtaining the Longitude prize.
      John
