      There’s a glitch to make yoshi fall out of bounds that is super easy to do. Just walk on the bottom of the ocean to get to the pipe and boom - no more 10 minute boat ride. Seriously, even if it takes you 5 minutes to learn the trick, you mess it up, AND you need two attempts at the Lilly pad level, learning the glitch is still faster than riding the boats.

      Sonic had it worse. At least Mario got a trial. A blatantly rigged trial, but a trial nonetheless. Plus Mario got "released" the next day and did get to enjoy his vacation to a degree while on community service and saving Peach. Had Tails not tried to break Sonic out (only for Amy to be the one to do it somehow), he'd be in jail because G.U.N. didn't notice the guy they're looking for had different styled hair -and was black.-

Not only that, G.U.N was just covering stuff up. They didn't want the population to worry about a potential threat to humanity that they themselves kept locked up for half a century. I'd be interested to see a video about your thoughts on The Isle o' Hags in Banjo Tooie. It accomplishes a lot of the same things. It's a hub world which also has the same amount of collectibles in any level. It has all the levels thematically represented around where you enter them. In fact, the levels fit better into the hub world than they do in Super Mario Sunshine. It feels more like you're physically entering the locations than it does in Mario Sunshine since you just teleport to them in Sunshine. It's WAY more massive than Delfino Plaza. AND, it also tells a story as you progress through the world in the form of the tread tracks from the Hag 1 and the destruction it leaves behind.

    Growing up in Southern California a few hours from the beach I found enjoyment in playing sunshine. It was like having a mini day at the beach with Mario. I distinctly remember appreciating the heats rays in the game and how realistic they are( because as a kid I always wondered what heat rays were). Most of the things in the game I could drive a few hours to the beach and experience in real life but I appreciated the island setting I got to experience without having to travel. Still one of my favorite games of all time and so glad it’s on the switch now.

    One other thing about Delphino Plaza is, that you can see pretty much every location from it, making it feel like a real place in the world and not like a "Yeah you teleport to this random place" thing (Am I right Mario Galaxy (2)???).
    I mean, you get a sense of scale when you can see Rico Harber (Did I spell it right) from the hub world itself. It's s detail so many hub worlds don't pay attention to.
    Also, I do agree that the Hub is more a Hub-Level Hybrid. And it's a perfect place to teach you mechanics in a safe environment. Instead of teaching you the turbo and rocket nozzle at dangerous levels can you unlock and use them in the hub, where no enemies, nor any deadly traps are. Giving you a safe place to get used to those new mechanics before giving you challenges to solve with them.
    It's such a minor, yet brilliant way to reduce frustration for learning new mechanics while not forcing a tutorial on you.

    • @Megapig9001
      @Megapig9001 4 года назад +10

      ZoomZike The idea of it being a mix between hub and level, since a lot of Odyssey is gateways into “mini-levels”, and most areas of Odyssey have some sort of town section. Then New Donk City just straight up feels like an expanded hub world since there’s no enemies lol.

    • @JoraffProductions
      @JoraffProductions 4 года назад +1

      I thought the same thing! I actually think that hub-slash-level design is a big reason that I didn't like Odyssey as much as many other people - each world feels like something that SHOULD grow and evolve over the course of the entire game, but you're constantly leaving them behind before they have an opportunity to do so.

    Hubworld-levels are an interesting concept that deserves further exploration.
    Distinct from normal levels they usually, they have few or no enemies. Death is either impossible at least unlikely. This makes sense for a number of reasons.
    1. For new players, a hubworld level can be like a low-key tutorial. Even old players who are just coming back to it will be able to reacquaint themselves with the basics of the controls in an environment that isn't going to kill them if they screw around too much.
    2. You end up in the hubworld a lot, so facing repeated difficulties there can be annoying.
    3. For pacing or story reasons, the hubworld is often employed as a break from violence and tension. They provide the player a chance to feel like a part of the world rather than a hostile invader. If movement is enjoyable and the world is well crafted, players can enjoy the game in a different way just by moving around a calm hubworld and taking it in.
    But hubworld levels are still levels, and do have some challenges to beat and objectives to achieve. The result is a different kind of difficulty compared to the rest of the game. From a game design perceptive, this is an opportunity to experiment with the games systems that an ordinary level doesn't necessarily employ.
    An example would be in Mario 64 where using the first person function of the camera to look up at the mosaic would allow access to a sky level.
    Another would be in Shantae and the Pirates Curse, where a collectible is hidden in such a way that you have to use all of your late-game jumping abilities in concert in order to acquire it.
    Spyro 2 has a collectible locked behind a pair of doors. Opening one closes the other. In order to progress, you have to fly from one window to the other and ignore them entirely. There are also Thief enemies in all the Spyro games that don't attack you or get in the way, but chasing them down rewards a collectible.
    Hubworlds have a relaxed pace, so it makes sense to have objectives that reward exploration, experimentation, and execution. You can have objectives like that in any level, but the limitations on hubworlds brings them to the forefront

    I really love how much of ZoomZike's content is just, him gushing about how much he loves something as simple as a "hub world" and why he likes it. He's not making content to get clicks or doing whatever's trendy, he's just talking about whatever he's feeling particularly excited or happy about, or maybe the opposite, regardless of current relevance. (At the risk of spamming this comment section) it's crazy to me that Delfino Plaza didn't return in the post-game of Mario Odyssey. It plays really similarly to a lot of those worlds if you think about it, it's an open stage with a bunch of collectables that you can grab without being booted out, and it has a number of entrances into linear, more self-contained platforming challenges.
    Nintendo could have kept most of the secret levels as they are (with the exception of the Pachinko one), replaced all of the Blue Coins with Shines (and used some of those timed Scarecrow challenges to get around the cleaning mechanic), and then retooled any in-stage Shines that required Sunshine-specific mechanics to work using Odyssey's gameplay. Things like capturing a Yoshi to snatch birds out of the sky or capturing a Pianta's head-tree and flinging Mario into buildings similarly to how you would with the Volbonans in Luncheon Kingdom would have been a *lot* of fun and helped the level to feel fresh. They could have even brought back the Sunshine Yoshi-juice mechanic and had that Capture Ability for any challenges requiring Mario to clean graffiti. Hell we could have even seen the Blue Coin shop reimagined as a store where Regional Coins (collected primarily from the manhole tunnels) could be traded for Shines!
    Obviously a lot of tweaking would be required and some extra Capture Abilities would need to be added to stand in for the Rocket and Turbo nozzles, but right off the bat this stage would have around 45 "Moons", which is *more* than the Mushroom Kingdom has if we stick to the Castle Grounds and don't count the Toadette ones.

    Sunshine did an amazing job creating an exciting, living world. Odyssey did a great job as well, but I don't think it even comes close to surpassing Sunshine's world. Especially because of Delfino Plaza. Every level is jam-packed with platforming, making it interesting and fun to traverse. Yet everything still feels like it has a purpose as well, and the NPC's do more than just stand around. Some walk, others run. It's so good.
    Odyssey was a great attempt, but I'm hoping we get an Odyssey 2 that comes just as close, if not better than Sunshine's level of excitement and liveliness.
    And if we don't get a proper hub world like Sunshine, maybe we could have a lively docking bay for airships that you return to after each kingdom, and you start off in every time you turn the game on. There could be all sorts of cool NPC's, things to do, and things that change throughout the adventure. It could be a best-of-both-worlds scenario. You can still fly to any kingdom you want, at any time. But there's still a hub that is important to your journey.

    Yes, Delfino Plaza is AMAZING.
    Also, I just realized... The Shine Sprites work like Stars in 64 and Galaxy, they are the main goal of a mission... But not in Delfino Plaza, when there's plenty of Shine Sprite scattered all around that work more like Odyssey's moon.
    Delfino Plaza is Mario Odyssey before Mario Odyssey!
    I also have to talk about the flood.
    When you unlock the Final Boss, at Corona Mountain, Delfino Plaza will be flooded, and all the Piantas are on houses' roofs.
    Firstly, it naturally leads the player to the Corona Mountain entrance, which is located higher than all the others level entries (Apart from Pianta Village), but it also make Delfino Plaza even more alive!
    Edit: And there's also the fact that you can see all the other levels around in the background, it makes Delfino Plaza (And the whole world of Sunshine as it's also in every level) feel even more believable.

    If I were to take a wild guess, I would say it's because you actually not only get, but you actually HAVE to, do things in the plaza. For example: the portals that take you to different stages are fairly spread out around the plaza. Not only that, but you have to get to a certain place or spray a certain area to get to these areas. In addition, you can freely roam around, which lets you come up with strategies and find new moves. Then, the plaza is brought to life by the piantas, including the two tourists that can't figure out why the sky is so dark even though "the brochure said that the glowing sun is the main feature of the isle!" In addition, the plaza rewards you for exploration: you have to parkour from ship to ship with yoshi to unlock a special pipe, you have to land on the rooftop and give a pianta a coin and he'll yeet you right into a shine sprite, and all these little things that just reward you for thinking outside of the vox. Finally, the character dialogue actually changes as the story progresses. All this combined with simple beauty makes Delfino Plaza the best Hub world.

I remember I wish I had some kind of cheat that would allow me to use infinitely (or at least not have it shut off automatically after 5 seconds), I loved using it to extend my jumps and just have fun while going from building to building. Ah, the innocency of childhood...

The deck with the umbrellas has the box minigame, the bell has a shine sprite (I think?), The boats lead to the islands and the plinko sub level, there's the guy that throws you into the tower with the shine, the blue coin in the prison, the shine drawing on the beach, the sub level you need the turbo nozzle for by the policemen, and the list goes on and on

    Delfino Plaza is akin to Bikini Bottom from BFBB: it’s a hub world that does more than just give you access to other levels. You have challenges you can take on for more of your main collectible (Shine Sprites/Golden Spatulas) and side collectibles (Blue Coins/Socks). You can see most of the levels off into the distance from the mainlands. You get to see how the NPCs are dealing with their current situation. You are getting more access to parts of the hub each time you complete certain challenges. There are mechanics that you would see in the main levels present within the hubs, such as the buttons or Yoshi. You can add Peach’s Castle into this list if you want. Sure, there are other challenges for Stars in the Castle, but there’s barely any characters in there and you can’t see off into the distance to see what is coming. Plus, the worlds don’t naturally link together in 64, so it doesn’t feel like you are saving 1 Huge world, it feels like 16 separate worlds you are helping.

    Seeing you and dunkey both talk about sunshine today, with both of y'all honing in on how great Delfino Plaza is, really makes me want to play Sunshine again.
    I will say though, having thought about it now - wouldn't it be even sicker if the plaza had progressive music? Like, as you collect more shines and brighten the area up more and more, the music would become livelier, add more parts, and maybe even start slower and speed up a bit as you collect more? I think that'd do even more to add to the feeling that the island is coming alive as you restore the shine sprites - if I had to criticize the plaza as is, the way it lights up is a bit understated, as cool as it is.

    • @zoomzike
      @zoomzike  4 года назад +1

    Delfino plaza is my favorite hubworld of all time

  • @hatwearinggamer
    @hatwearinggamer 4 года назад +1

    Counter point: Delfino Plaza doesn't expand physically. Peach's castle in Mario 64, Grunty's Lair in Banjo-Kazooie, Isle O' Hags in Banjo-Tooie, even the comet observatory does this. I find that this expansion helps incentive me explore the hub further. It was rare when I thought I had something new to discover about Delfino Plaza... even though this is probably a tiny thing and everything else you said are still qualities of a good hub.

    • @zoomzike
      @zoomzike  4 года назад +1

      With SM64 and Galaxy, there were little to no collectables to be found in the hub world, so they had to find some way to give an incentive for exploring it, which they found in expansion. Because Delfino Plaza has shine sprites, it didn't need to go the expansion route, since the collectables are good enough inventive - if not more in my eyes - to explore.
