hello learners, welcome to today's video,
Today, you will learn the meaning, the types and you get to see some examples of syllables.
It is important to know that the knowledge of syllables helps you to read better, it helps you to know when to use the short sound or the long vowel sound.
    what is a syllable?
a syllable is the smallest sound in a word which contains a vowel
it is a way of breaking our words into smaller parts to help with pronunciation.
for instance, in the words cat, broom.
when you look at these two words
they have just one syllable each
remember we say a syllable is the smallest sound in a word or the smallest sound you can break a word into and it must contain a vowel sound.
so when you hear cat, cat can only be broken down into one syllable, it doesn't have more than one,
then look at the word broom
broom, thats the only sound you can break it into, when you break it further, it dies not make sense.
you can not have brom, or bro om, no, you can only have broom, and that's it.
now lets try with the name Sophia
    so
    phi
    a
how many vowels sounds can you hear in the word
    three!
    you have
    o
    i
    a
    so phi a
    sophia
    types of syllable
there are 2 types of syllable
    they are
    open and closed syllables
open syllable ends with a vowel, and the vowel is usually long
    for example
    music, lion, tulip
    in these 3 words
    the vowels are long vowels
    look at Music
    you have mu-sic
the u is a long vowel sound, it open, that is it is not followed by another letter
when we break the first syllable, mu
    it ends with a u
    no other followed it
    it's just u
    so mu-sic
the first syllable in music is long while the second is short
    look at lion too
    we have li-on
the 'i ' is the last letter there
    it is a vowel
and it is not followed by another letter
li is the 1st syllable and on is the 2nd syllable
i makes the long vowel sound
the 3rd word in our example is tulip
    tu-lip
    you see the sound u
is not followed by any other letter
in that syllable we have 2 syllables
    tu and lip
tu is an open syllable because it is not followed by another letter
now what is a closed syllable?
a closed syllable ends with a consonant
and the vowel sound is short
    for example
    lipstick
    flip \flop
    slap
    look at the first word
    lip-stick
    lip-stick
lipstick is a 2 syllable word
and in each syllable, there is a short vowel sound which is followed by a consonant
we also the same thing with flip flop
flip which is the 1st syllable ends with a consonant
flop also ends with a consonant
look at the word slap also
    just a single syllable word
    it ends with a consonant
now, it's time to put that smart brain of yours to test
    look at these words
can you find the kind of syllables they have?
can you tell the number of syllables in each word?
can you tell the types of syllables they have?
    give it a try...
    that's it!
you now know what syllables are
and the difference between open and closed syllables
    practice makes perfect!
try breaking down words into syllables in your every day life.
