Travelling 26 hours for a Turkish Breakfast in Istanbul, Turkey (flying from Auckland, New Zealand)

- Опубликовано: 30 сен 2024
- This is our very first vlog from Istanbul, Turkey. It's our first time visiting Turkey and it's the country we picked for our first overseas trip once New Zealand's borders opened (making returning back to NZ much easier than it has been in the last few years).
Traveling from New Zealand to Turkey is a very long journey though which took us almost 26 hours as we flew from Auckland to Singapore, then Singapore to Istanbul.
With an NZ passport, you don't need a visa to visit Turkey (you can stay up to 3 months), nor is any pre-departure test required to enter Turkey and no tests on arrival either. The only main requirement is your international vaccine passport making Turkey a great place to visit for Kiwis especially given the new travel situation.
When transiting in Singapore, as long as you're staying within the airport and not entering the country, you do not require any tests either. We stayed a few hours in a transit hotel while in Singapore's Changi Airport which allowed us to freshen up, have a meal and a short nap before continuing on to Istanbul. The transit hotel is booked in a 6 hour block and is located in Terminal 3 towards the end of Singapore Food Street (food court).
Istanbul spans across both Europe and Asia. Our Airbnb is on the European side and in a quiet residential neighbourhood. Our host Sezgi couldn't be lovelier. Her place is in walking distance to some local eateries as well as convenience stores. It's about a 10 minute walk to a bus stop (which then takes about 10-15 mins to get to Kabataş where you can catch the ferry or tram to get to other popular spots in Istanbul).

Istanbul and Turkey have been on our travel bucket list for quite some time. One of the very first things we wanted to do was try a traditional Turkish breakfast which we've only heard great things about and we absolutely loved it. Sezgi recommended us a fantastic place near our accommodation for our first breakfast in Turkey and it was amazing.
Gonenly Gurme (Google shows the name Gönenli Peynircmm)
Address: Dikilitaş Mah Boroğlu Apt, Emirhan Cd. D:No: 74/4, 34349 Beşiktaş

When visiting Dolmabahçe Palace, we recommend getting an audio guide to understand what you're actually seeing as you're walking around inside the buildings. The ticket lets you see the selamlik, harem + resim muzesi (museum of paintings). Keep it with you throughout your visit as they scan it at each entrance and exit. When going inside any of the 3 buildings, you're expected to wear disposable plastic (bag-like) shoe covers which they provide at the entrance.
Another thing we recommend when visiting Istanbul is getting yourself an Istanbul Card as soon as possible if you're planning on using any public transport. We'll cover more of this in a future video.

Missed you all nice to wake up and see all the messages. Take care everyone n have an awesome week 🤙
Welcome to Turkiye.
9:34 ---- Çeçil Peynir or Tel Peynir (Peynir=Cheese)
is there any chance you guys would go to the Derinkuyu underground city ? that would be so good ! :)
Thanks for that 😁🤙
@DK Yes! We will be going there later on in our trip, can't wait 😁
Welcome back guys 😊 Turkey is on my list to visit so couldn't be more excited when I saw your video this morning, happy travels!
Only a few weeks into our trip but couldn't recommend turkey enough it has been incredible so far 😁👍
Travel day!! How did I miss this first video of your Turkish adventures?? We have been gone from YT for a while as you know, but I thought I was up to all your adventures.
So cool to see the beginning of your trip!
We haven't taken a plane since last year, I don't think I remember the feeling of it hahaha
Never been in a transit hotel, it looks so good.
Yes, the SIM cards are pretty steep in price at the airport. We pay 85 TL a month for 20gb there. We had Turkcell but now we have Vodafone, as residents we have to have a phone number to get all our government stuff in place, like vaccinations, residency permit, car insurance and all that.
That is shreded cheese, it is just like a regular soft cheese shreded. and the donuts are called pisi
The cheese that had jalapeno flavor, it must be sumac, it is a red Turkish spice, very similar to paprika or jalapeno in powder, but much better .. do we sound biased? hahaha
Turkish people are so amazing, we are so spoiled, now we see that as the rule...and it isn't unfortunately.
Hahahaha thanks for binging all of our videos Maria. You know what's crazy since we met up with you all those weeks ago we've seen so much amazing stuff. It's crazy to think that all this incredible scenery, history and food all comes from one country.
Appreciate all the info on the food items 😁💪 and we’re glad to see you all back can't wait to watch and see what you all get up to next. Safe travels and adventures where ever yall are!
bye australia :'( - but but but! XD haha...
😂
for a transit hotel, they definitely charge an arm and leg XD - $250 SGD isnt cheap for a like few hours rest. But i mean i get it :D haha - i would spend to be fully rested haha
Hahaha never would have bought it ourselves but mum and dad's shout all good 😅
Ya, new video from you guys😍🥰😄🥳
Yaaaay we're back!
Ok wait I actually can’t figure it out but yen looks super pretty in the airport? 🤨🤔 I mean you’re always pretty but like even more e_e something is it the hair?
Hahahaha 😂 usually Yen is a bit of a munter after a long flight but after this one she was really good. She's got a good system now to combat motion sickness
While I'm watching this video I enjoyed so much. As a turkish person, I'm being so happy tourists are comes to our country I'm wait your new videos with excite in Turkey. Take care of yourself ❤️
Greetings from Ankara ( capital of turkey )

Just Delicious I’m so jealous
This is going to be a fantastic vlog guys .. thanks ..travel safe ..I’m coming along for this special ride
😅 it is without doubt one of the food capitals of the world enjoying both the variety and the quality of all the different flavors during our stay. Glad you enjoyed the first one of the series (there will be heaps more 😂)
A good spread that breakfast indeed! Way to start the day!
💯 delicious
The Turkish people are the most helpful you can imagine.
Very true 😊✌️
Omg that Turkish breakfast looks super awesome and delicious!
I am so jealous 😍
Great to hear you get help from local Turkish people 👍🏻
Looking forward to your next vlog 😄
Turkish people have been so friendly, warm and welcoming even with the language barriers 😊❤️ it's really made our trip extra enjoyable!
Nice Video :) just in Besiktas you have the famous "Breakfast street". One street only dedicate to places for turkish breakfast o kahvalti. Mostly weekends theres a long line to have breakfast in this street. The name is Sinanpaşa, Çelebi Oğlu Sk. :)
Thank you for the recommendation 😊 that street sounds like it has a lot of delicious food 🤤
Yay 5th to comment!
Wow what a start!! Awesome vid & Turkey you are definetly something else.
After our first few weeks can confirm this is an awesome place to visit 😁 lots of adventure to come
Great Video guys. The emotions on Peter's face when eating is priceless :D. Enjoy your stay.

Thanks Sonny glad to have you along for the adventure 😊✌️
Hey Peter and Yen!! Really enjoyed watching your video as always 😊
So great to see you start traveling the world again.
Turkey is such a great destination to visit for first time after long time no travel since pandemic.
Thank you guys! It's such an adventure for us coz it's so different to anywhere we've been so far 😃 so good to be traveling overseas again! 🙌
Great to see you guys are back I have waited a long time.
Glad to be back 😊
Awesome! I love the brekkie. All of that was $35?! I can't get over the laundry being underneath the stove haha
Hahahaha yo bro! Yeah man massive meal for two for $35 it's a sweet deal.
Hi Peter ,Hi Yen , What a trip . Turkey looks fantastic. Enjoy your trip . I will looking forward to some more vlogs of Turkey.♥️u guys Be safe ...🙏🙏🙏
Thank you P Trevino we've had a few really amazing weeks here already. Can't wait to see more of this beautiful county 😊✌️
Great to see you travelling again. I’ve been looking forward to this one. I’m sure your videos will help us with our upcoming trip to Turkey 🇹🇷
~David
Yo David hope you've been good! Oooo hope you n the fam have a good time in Turkey this country has been a lot of fun so far 🤙
Peter doing the honorary room tour :D
Not as good as yens
Connie and I really enjoyed watching your first Turkey vlog! What an adventure! Your breakfast looked very interesting! I saw pictures of it on Instagram but did not know what most of the items were! I’m guessing it might have been hard to describe something that’s foreign and also ingredients that you have not tasted before! You two did a great job! I had no idea that there is an European side to Istanbul! I had never heard of the palace that you toured! The mosques that I’ve been to must have been on the Asia side! 🤣🤣🤣
Yo guys hope you've both been well. Yen showed me the photos and videos from your safari and it looks like you both had an absolutely incredible time! So jelly real life lion king 🦁 😂
You're totally right about the flavors.. some of the dishes we've had here have been so unique never had anything like it before need to think of the right adjective on the spot to describe it is hard 😂 we try though
i always admire how you are able to speak into a camera in front of so many people walking around you ..... isnt it feeling weird sometimes ? ^^
It did feel really weird at the start but somehow after so many years got used to it 😂
That breakfast looked epic! Cant wait to see when you go to have lunch and dinner somewhere!
Hahahaha lunch and dinner on the way soon 😂
@@PeterandYen Lol awesome can't wait!
Welcome to Turkey, your breakfast did not comply with Turkish breakfast norms, I think you should not leave without having a full Turkish breakfast. I hope you enjoy it. Note: Advice from someone who experienced Trans Alpine pleasure years ago. 😂😂😂
😁 the meal was incredible but we will definitely be having a lot more Turkish breakfasts throughout our stay 👍 what are the usual Turkish breakfast norms?
@@PeterandYen First of all, I hope your holiday will pass with pleasant and unforgettable memories. In addition to your breakfast, Kuymak, Sucuk, Sausage, Tahini - Molasses, Honey - Cream, Jam varieties (especially apricot jam). The easiest place for you to find is in Beşiktaş district, you should find the breakfast street and try it there. You will better understand what I mean and the difference. In advance, bon appetit.
Thank you for the recommendations Sinan. We are having an incredible time here. In fact we just left Trabzon where we tried very tasty Kuymak 😁 will need to go back to Besiktas to search for that street and get the apricot jam too 👍
@@PeterandYen You are going to the right place, my wife is also from Trabzon. You should try pide and kuymak there. It is the homeland of Kuymak. I'm also very pleased that your holiday was enjoyable.
well done top notch standard as we expect from both of you . i kinda dont think you will get to see half of Istanbul but yeah really enjoyed the memories , take care and enjoy
Hahaha yes istanbul is a huge city but we will certainly try though 😁 been having a blast exploring all around
谢谢!
Thank you Dad hahaha 🙏😆❤️
Yay! excited to watch all your Turkey vlogs! I intentionally do not skip ads so I can help in my own small way to fund your future videos! 😀
😅 aaa that's so nice of you Merlyn. Thank you for your support and good you enjoy our vlogs from Turkey 🇹🇷 🤙
Istanbul airport looks pretty empty!
Might be cause it's gigantic though 🤔 😂 so many people here in the city
@@PeterandYen Yeah, I remember it being huge, but also crowded!
LOVE IT
Pssst did you spot the wave over Darwin Rex 👋😉
Looking fwd to more vlog
Thanks 😁✌️
Yay love to see people starting to travel again, and thanks for posting all the costs.
It's so awesome being able to travel overseas again and Turkey has been fantastic so far, really enjoying our time here 😊🙌
Will be in Turkey at the end of September, following you to get some ideas!
Awesome! Hope you'll have a ton of ideas on your list by then from our vlogs 😁🙌 which cities are you planning on going to?
@@PeterandYen we fly into Istanbul, then Cappadocia, Antalya, and Izmir. With day trips and other stops along the way. Like you two, we travel the world going to 5 or 6 countries a year. However, this will be our first trip to Turkey!
Amazing! Sounds like such a fantastic trip. We've been having a wonderful time so far, it's so different and the people we've met and interacted with have all been so warm and welcoming that it's made things even more enjoyable. Food is great, history is fascinating and there's just so much to see! Istanbul's public transport is really good too so it's been easy to get around. That Istanbul card is used everywhere 🙂👍 we're currently in trabzon now then off to safranbolu next.
Is it safe to leave one's passport as a deposit for the audio guide, is it worth the risk??
Guys what a journey! Yeah, after 2 years of no international travelling, the excitement is big!!
😍😍😍exciting n interesting trip.
Hahaha very exciting 😁
Awesome vlogs!!!! That meal looked delicious, good work Peter and Yen!!!
Thanks John 😁🤙 glad you enjoyed the first one from istanbul
Love Changi Airport. Have spent so much time there over the years, it has grown so large now. Did you spent some time and go through Jewel Changi Airport?..... Have fun and enjoy :) Another wonderful vid. Keep safe. Changing time zones is just a body killer.......
In one of our old vlogs we went one further and made a vlog about all the different terminals on top of the jewel hahaha.
Took us about a week to fully adjust to the new zone 🙃
Yesss my Sundays are complete again! Missed your videos : )
🤙 glad to be back thanks for waiting for us 😂
Hi Peter & Yen. Just wanted to thank you for all of your Istanbul vlogs, and the Gallipoli one.
My husband and I (in our 60’s) are visiting Istanbul for a week next February and I just love your vlogs ❤
Thank you 🙏
Hello Sandra 👋 Thank you for your incredibly kind comment and we're happy to hear you enjoy our videos! Turkey is a very interesting place. We hope you have a wonderful time there! Happy and safe travels for when you go 🥰❤️❤️
AMAZING! I’m having a lil Insta break so is good to catch up with your adventures on YT :D What an incredible start to your journey and look forward to the rest! Take care :)
Yo Bella 😁 there was no other way to start our Turkey adventures than with a traditional breakfast been looking forward to this for so long and it did not disappoint 🤤👌
Peter makes that door look tiny lol
How nice to see the world again ☺️
😁 it's been really nice exploring Turkey, istanbul has been such a different experience for us. Feels like a real adventure 🤙

Thank you! 😊
Oh yes finally this is just so good and I've only watched a few seconds! Haha! Seriously that airport looks so amazing now and I will have to do a wander around there which will be good enouigh for me! Haha! Well Yen after 26 hours of flying, those long walks be a total breeze now huh? ;) LOL! Yeah great to see some of Singapore too and the hotel stayover and of course FOOD! Hey good point about SIM cards; can you remind us what are the best options for that for international travel, like say texting/calling from there to New Zealand? So was those included minutes to anywhere in the world? Oh yes that breakfast looks amazing oh and really reasonably priced accommodation too! You guys had a great experience on the bus which was great! Yeah amazing Palace and the photos on the brochure looked amazing! Really great job you guys and will remember Sundays now at usual time! :)
Usually what we do is keep a spare phone and put our new Zealand Sims in it then with our main phones we will buy a local Sim. This is usually a bit cheaper. Depending on your provider you might be able to get daily roaming for a fixed charge but this option is normally more expensive. This always needs a bit of research before traveling 😉 hope you've been well 🤙
@@PeterandYen Ah hey yeah that would work! My immediate thought was that you might have a dual SIM phone, but I know those phones use a lot more battery than a single SIM phone! Yeah you got that right - a lot of research needed on these sort of things! Sounds like what you do works well! :)
Hi Peter & Yen. Nice to see again.
Looking forward to seeing more videos from Turkey. Are they using Euro Dollar?
Hello hello, the common currency is Turkish lira here but some tourist places do accept euro for big payments.
Breakfast 340 Turkish lira ? they say lie I think or need be rich place it's impossible price. if you still in Turkey before eat or buy ask price then you can choice. in have Turkey economic problems now. 200 Turkish lira maybe okay but 340 almost double for 2 person. Also restaurants and shops must have to write prices in Turkey, if there is no price on the sign or something, do not shop there, they will be want the prices too high because you are a tourist. Welcome to Turkey have a nice trip.
Thank you Ravella, we're having a wonderful time in Turkey 🙂🙏 I suppose the place is a bit more expensive than other places in Turkey but the quality was gourmet and really good. We were ok with the price plus have eaten at many local spots since then so all balances out 😁 this place was in our local residential neighbourhood too so maybe it's just a more expensive place because of the produce used. It tasted amazing though so we were happy 😁
Way cool guys have an awesome time and keep us posted on your adventures
Thanks Andre 😁✌️ lots of videos on the way
Great first video on Turkey guys. Beautiful scenery and architecture. Interesting coverage on the Turkish breakfast. Well done, guys. Miss you !
Turkey has been fantastic so far 😁 glad to be back 💪
Hi Peter and Yen, I always enjoy watching your videos. ❤️❤️💜💜
Thank you Emma! We've got plenty to share from our travels in Turkey 😊
You arrived safely! Have fun you guys!
Thank you 😁 ✌️
Hello everyone, if you are interested I can tell you what things are called. The bread is called Bazlama and is eaten mostly for breakfast. The first thing he tried is called acili ezme (translated: spicy paste) it may or may not be spicy. The second is a traditional cheese from Erzincan and is called Tulum cheese. The second is also a traditional Turkish cheese and is called Cökelik cheese. The sausage is called Sucuk and is a beef garlic sausage, it tastes best fried. Hope I could help. Best regards
Thanks for all the info Soner 😁👍

great to see you back - did you find a renewed energy to travel once you got abroad ? Turkey seems fascinating!
🤔 hmmmm I would say yes... especially coming somewhere as different as turkey. Really want to explore and see all the amazing things in the country not to mention eat all the tasty food 😂
Great to have you guys back and Thank You. Now that is a proper Big Breakfast! Have a great time in and around Besiktas and safe travels. BTW, noticed that Peter is wearing a new pair of shoes
Hahahaha nice spotting L H. A lot of the attractions here in istanbul have a dress code so rather than miss out on anything I've dressed to the situation 😂 nice to hear from you take care and have a great week ahead
Where did you get your money exchanged to lira? Can I use my atm card to just tap? Thank you.
We've got a tips about traveling turkey video coming up in a month or so that has lots of handy things to know about traveling but in the meantime we use Wise cards which allow you to withdraw from foreign ATMs for lower fees 😉
Hi. How much was your taxi ride?
So nice to be able to follow your travels again 😊
And you're definitely not in NZ anymore 😉
💯😂 good to be back on RUclips!
This is making me so hungry hahah. Thanks for sharing! 💕
😁👌
Hi guys! I believe that the hairy cheese is actually a Turkish knitting cheese known as erzurum cecil
Ooo awesome to know, thank you 👍👍 It was so yum!
Wow as a fellow Aucklander, your travel has motivated and inspired me to get myself out there. I hope you guys enjoy the rest of your trip!
Thank you! Auckland is great too but it's fun seeing the rest of the world 🌎 😁

The food here is awesome 👌 so much tasty stuff as the vlogs keeps going.

Thanks Chris 😁🤙
İm sorry but breakfest and airbnb so expensive for turkey they are scammed you.
We really enjoyed our breakfast and stay at our Airbnb too (our host has been wonderful) so it feels like good value to us 🙂 where do you recommend for a good kahvaltı? We love learning about local recommendations 🙏
Getting a stop over hotel between flights makes the whole journey so much better. Especially with such long flights. Glad to see you guys finally got to travel outside of NZ! Altjoygh I'm really going to miss your vlog there 😊
Hahaha yeah would never buy that luxury ourselves but our parents are nice like that
The excitement of traveling!! 😍🤩 I feel excited for you guys too haha! woot Peter doing room review this time 👍 "if only you guys could taste that" 🤤🥲 what an amazing spread of breakfast! Glad you guys have the phone 😆 thanks for taking us for sightseeing!! What an amazing place, and the palace looks incredible! 😍
😁 yeah it does feel really good to be traveling and going on adventures again. Turkey is awesome in that everything is just soo different to what we are used to so feels like we've stepped into a new world 😍
I had 11 hr transit at Singapore and had a great rest at the Transit Hotel
.. it was expensive but it was so nice to refresh before flying on
😅 yeah if it wasn't for mum and dad never would have paid for this luxury ourselves. But was really nice getting the lil nap. Much needed
Lovely video ❤ I visited Istanbul two weeks ago and I want back 😂
Thank you! It's such a cool city isn't it 😃
Very informative! Are you guys doing road trip around turkey?

Glad to be back having a blast here in istanbul 😁🤙
Great vlog, what are the requirements to get into Turkey? Pcr test? face mask mandates?
Thanks! No requirements just the standard visa ones
Oh and proof of vaccination just remembered 😅 but no tests. If you're in NZ passport, it's visa-free for 90 days too 🙂👍
That breakfast looks so good im soo jelous hi from Australia
Hello hello 😁👋
👍👍👍
.
good video
Yo! What's up everybody!!! Back again!! Woohoooooo I'm a little late, but made it for Turkey time! Of course, was looking forward to what you guys eat first😁😁 The tomato pepper dip looked super yum...looks like something I'd dip everything into😋😋 Haha loved Peter's initial reaction to the hairy cheese... sounds like it was good, but when someone says "That is so interesting..." Must be so exciting to try all those new flavors!! I never understood places that allow you to film with your cellphone, but not with a camera...as if video is different from a phone 🤷♂?? Glad you guys got there safe, and looks like your Turkish adventure is off to an excellent start. Looking forward to next Sunday! Safe travels guys!
Yo dude lol all good I'm surprised you even have internet connection 😂😂 funny you say that.. that turned out to be yens favourite food item and she was actually dipping everything in it hahaha. The new flavors r so awesome we've tried a bunch of different foods so far and it's been awesome! Sometimes hard to describe but that's part of the fun. 😅 yeah thankfully so far this is the only time we've had our gear stopped at security check. You take care too mate 🤙🌿
@@PeterandYen I haven’t had wifi in days…but just in time 🦃😁… by the way, Lowepro 🎒 looks 👍👍👍… How’s it working out so far?
@@SeoulMan2020 pretty happy with the bag set up finally. The RAZR and Lowerpro bags can fit all the stuff we need on a long trip and finally distribute the weight evenly. The search for the perfect bag set up can now rest hahaha.
@@PeterandYen Glad you found the perfect bag! Good gear is important, but a great gear bag makes life so much better! (I have a decent wifi connection just in time for Sunday! I think I've had wifi about 40% of my trip 😆)
Love you two and your content!
Thanks Kekai ❤️
I visited Istanbul in October 2001 and seeing your video takes me back to all the noises of the city - not a lot of quiet places there, aye?
But it is so interesting and grand there.
Also: Turkey must be way out of your comfort zone as you're used to going to Asia mostly, so hat tip to you guys for your choice!
I reached out to a Turkish friend for tips for you guys, but she never replied, unfortunately.
What areas do you still have to cover? I'm suddenly thinking of another contact I might be able to reach...
Thanks Bert! We've still got a big trip around cappadocia and Antalya coast line left. I think stepping out of comfort zones is the most fun cause it usually means the most amazing adventures and memories. So far istanbul has been incredible can't wait for the rest of the trip. Luckily our AirBnb is in a quiet neighborhood so we can return home to some peace 😁🤙
@@PeterandYen So I've checked with my contact.
They only know Kaş and Fethiye, which is close to Antalya, apparently.
If you would like some tips about those places, give a yell and I'll ask them for some in-depth tips.
Have fun!
Cheers Bert we are heading in that direction later on our trip will keep that in mind 👍
Why didn't you guys stopover Singapore and try their food? 😱
Wanted to see something totally different to what we're used to and Turkey ticked that box in every way 😁
Been to Singapore many times before 🙂👍
Must be great to be back overseas! Hopefully i can get to Europe next year
Nice! Where do you think you'll go?
@@PeterandYen Was really excited to get to St Petersburg but it seems unlikely with the current war situation. Thankfully we can still get to Estonia, Finland and Sweden!
Not often you see Peter pants and shoes
Hahahaha a lot of attractions here have dress code soooo... pants and shoes have to come out
That's so nice of you parents to book the transit hotel for you. 😁
Looking forward to all the Turkey adventures.
😁 yeah our parents are nice like that. Istanbul the city of adventures ✨️
Miss you guys. Glad to see your back and enjoying some new adventures. Thanks for taking us along on the road! Safe travels. I'm looking forward to more videos.
Thanks Marylyn 😊 nice to be back and chatting with everyone again. New videos are on the way 🤙
That breakfast looks beyond incredible!! And wow I couldn’t believe how beautiful all the details were in and around palace!
It was soo good and we were incredibly stuffed 😂👍 the palace was interesting but such a shame couldn't show the inside especially that chandelier! It was enormous!
looking forward to more videos of you in turkey! Looks like a magnificent place!
So far it's been awesome been having a lot of fun exploring all the new places ☺️ lots more videos on the way 🤙
Thanks!
Thank you ☺️🙏❤️
Thank you for showing us Turkey. I know the feeling when you're in a foreign country. We felt exactly the same with our first overseas trip. I want that donut now, ship to Australia Peter?
😂 you're gonna have to make the trip and get one 🤙 the breads are amazing here so fluffy usually served with every meal
@@PeterandYen it reminds me our fried bread too Banh Tieu with sesame seeds. We usually eat fir snack or sandwich it with sweet sticky rice. 😋

Hahaha thankfully had that transit hotel to freshen up mid way 😁 thanks Nick hope you've been well 🙂
