I do that try tip trick to I’ve been doing that for years. Especially when I bake. I have all of my ingredients out and one little trick I’ve learned is it starts out on the tray and as I add them to my bowl they sit on the counter and the dirty dishes go on the tray. That way I know I got everything into the bowl because if it’s on the tray it hasn’t been added yet.
Having your son in the video made it more homey. Cute. I have a video where we make our own hot cocoa too. Homemade is fun and most often, if not always, better. Have a great day.
He has been asking to be in a video for a while. I really don't love showcasing them in my videos but I decided to do it this time. He was thrilled. :)
this is great and its actually instant unlike the other 'instant' videos that involve heating milk but I would half the quantities as I did the quantities listed and I filled a 750g container with more spare
Oh, I'm so glad you enjoyed it! I just put it on the grocery list so we can have our first batch next week!!! (My kids have been asking since July. LOL)
Great video. I'm curious why you use powdered sugar instead of granulated? My mother used Nestle's Quik or Hershey's Chocolate Syrup just like every other mother but every so often she would boil up some Cocoa and sugar to make a syrup maybe with a dash of vanilla. It was pretty much the same recipe as fudge except you don't boil it as long so it stayed syrupy. We would use that for fudge sauce over ice cream or to make hot chocolate. It was the best flavor ever! Yours is basically the same thing but without the boiling.
Great question! The powdered sugar makes for a smoother dissolve. Without a longer cooking time, I find that granulated sugar doesn't dissolve quickly. (My stovetop cocoa uses granulated sugar.) Your mom's sounds fantastic! My kids would love that on ice cream.
You can use any kind of cocoa powder you want. Sometimes I use the Dutch-process kind from Penzey's (in the video), other times I use Hershey's. As for how much, add 3-5 tablespoons of your mix to your mug. Top your mug with hot water and mix well.
I like about 3 1/2 tablespoons per regular size coffee mug, my kids like five. I’m not sure how many ounces are in a regular mug, so I’d start with maybe 2 1/2 tablespoons and then taste test.
According to www.thedailymeal.com/cook/ways-use-salts-desserts “Salt has the ability to enhance flavors and balance desserts that are rich and sweet. Added to the right dessert, salt will improve texture, make citrus fresher, render spices more aromatic and help dark chocolate and cocoa taste less bitter. It’s not all about flavor, though. Baking is a science, and salt is part of that. Salt is an anti-caking agent and an emulsifier, so it brings all the ingredients together”
Sorry I missed this! But @allesamazing shared what I would have said. I dont entirely understand the science of it, I just do as I'm told in this regard. LOL
I haven’t tried it because I wanted a replacement for hot chocolate mixes with this recipe. I suppose you could, and then just use milk instead of water when you prepare it. If I don't have powdered milk on hand, I just use my stove top cocoa recipe. (Also on my channel.)
You can. I made this recipe minus the powder milk (to exited) and used some chocolate shavings (trying to make it fancy) and somehow came out tasting like 3 musketeers? We did also use milk instead of water but we do that with the mixes usually 1/2.
The original recipe, I believe, said up to 3 months. We've made some in late winter and used it the next fall with no problem. The only thing that has an expiration date would be the powdered milk, so just check whatever powdered milk you use.
Thank you I hate the package stuff soo watery.❤☕ I usually use chocolate chips vanilla and milk hint of salt. I would like something everyone will like.
I can't imagine that wouldn't work. We often add heavy cream at the end, so a powdered version sounds perfectly creamy. I've never heard of that -- thanks for the tip!
Great helper, thanks for this recipe. Not that it would last long, what would be the shelf life on this mix? Also a terrific life learning lesson in the kitchen and sneaking in math lessons too 💕 #teamunschooling #learningiseverywhere
Love the recipe. Thanks. When your son translated 1 cup into 8/8 I thought, he’s got it.
I so appreciate that you made your son part of the video. He is adorable.
Thank you!
I just love how your son is so smart with the math of cooking
Thanks for doing this video!
Your boy is absolutely adorable!
I just made this mix. I used 1/3 cup less powder sugar than called for and the hot chocolate is DELICIOUS! Thank you.
Oh, I'm glad you enjoyed it!! We're making a big batch this week now that the cooler weather is setting in.

That is GENUIS! I can't believe I've never thought to do that. So much easier to clean up, too, if I only have to take on load of tray + dirty dishes.
That is my absolute favorite powdered milk to drink or use
What a cute video! Seems like a very happy and healthy household 😊
Exactly what I was thinking. I miss being a kid and cooking stuff with my mom

Used recipe you and your son made together for this past 2022 Christmas, grandkids loved it ;) Thank you both so much

You have the most adorable helper! Thanks for sharing. I'm making them mix now.
Hope you enjoy it!
I had a really good instant hot chocolate mix that I used to make 30 years ago. Can’t find it but this looks close so I thank you so much!
I'm so sorry you can't find your old recipe! But I hope this one is a starting point you can tweak to get closer to the one you loved.
Mine had an instant creamer. It was so good. This is so close I’m sure it is great. Thanks for this!
Thank you so much for sharing this with us? Looks like a promising chef you have there!!
Wonderful recipe made 100% better by Matthew 😁. Thank you for sharing 😊
Aww, this video is so wholesome!
Great recipe.Your Son is adorable.
Thank you! Enjoy your hot chocolate.

This sounds good, but what kind of cocoa? How much of the mix do you use in the hot water?

😋 I like to use powdered goat milk if I want mint I use York patties also flavored toffees or caramel.
We were just wondering how goat milk would do in it! My daughter has developed a lactose intolerance.
Do you have a favorite brand?
Good
It's more tastier because your little one make this😘👌👌
Loved this video! New subscriber now!
Wow... Your boy's smart I couldn't even remember How many teaspoons I would need. Haha
What amount of hot chocolate powder do I add per 1 cup of water.

@@TheHomeschoolBreakroom Thank you Even though I havent made it yet it looks so much better than the store bought packets. Cant wait to make it.
Great recipe, been using it for a year now, coming back to it every now and then, but may i ask what does teaspoon of salt does?

Thank you for your answers, i'm not interested in science behind it, was just interested what i does. Thank you again :)
i love your hot cocoa and my kids love it to
I'm so glad to hear that!! Thank you!
What about the marshmallows?
Oh, who can forget the marshmallows??! We love the dried ones like in the hot chocolate packets. We buy a BIG bag of them every winter.
Thanks so much for sharing!
Can I make this without the powder milk ?!
I haven’t tried it because I wanted a replacement for hot chocolate mixes with this recipe.

How many tbsp or tsp should I use?
1/4th cup per 6 ounces of water.
How much mix per cup ?
I suggest starting with about 3 tablespoons, and then adjusting. I prefer 3 tablespoons, my kids use four.
hiow much do you add toa cup before you add the water
Hi Judi! Start with three tablespoons and then see if you need more to taste.
Winter? Hot chocolate smacks any time of the year
My kiddos would agree with you! And now that we've discovered frozen hot chocolate, they have decided that will be a weekly summer drink.
For how long can you store the mix?
The original recipe, I believe, said up to 3 months. We've made some in late winter and used it the next fall with no problem. The only thing that has an expiration date would be the powdered milk, so just check whatever powdered milk you use.

Hershey cocoa, great value non fat powdered milk & dark chocolate chips....
Delicious!! Thx
You're speaking my teen's love language with dark chocolate chips!! :D

Alton Brown says it'll last a year. It certainly doesn't last that long here though!! LOL
