    I return to upstate New York for the New York Sheep and Wool Festival! So much fun! But… there was one satellite event, Wool & Folk… did you hear? Indie dyers and attendants won’t ever forget the nightmare they experienced at the hands of greed and misused power.
    After the filming of this video, I watched the IG live of the owner/dyer of Explorer Knits. Things were much worse than I thought. Like, the worst. Now I feel that my impressions of the event were too mild. I really didn’t realize how bad things actually were and me discussing anything positive about the event is… a bit tone deaf. 😰Please let me know your thoughts in the comment section.
    I probably shouldn’t have named names. Could I potentially be making myself vulnerable to slander cases? Ugh.

    I have spent so much money with Lamb and Kid the last year. Their response to what happened at Wool and Folk really left a bad taste in my mouth. Looking forward to spending my money moving forward with the many other talented dyers.

    Love you Gina, you’re a real one. You’ll always be my favorite knitting gal. ❤❤❤ Wool and Folk sounded like a nightmare. Very cool of you to mention the smaller vendors who were left in the dark.

    Thanks for YOU! You’re a hoot! I love your candid comments…I’m not going to name names, but some podcasts have become nothing but an infomercial for products…not that that’s not the game, but c’mon…and EVERYBODY is pushing a yarn from my area, an island in the northwest and face it…it is almost inaccessible to anyone living on a budget. Oh, an I’ve ordered some of YOUR yarn and look forward to getting it!😘

    • @superioradvantage
      @superioradvantage 11 месяцев назад +11

      I noticed the same thing. Podcaster infomercial. The designers team up with yarn companies…get FREE yarn and call it yarn support, design a sweater that needs multiple expensive skeins and the average person can’t afford the $200-300 sweater. It’s ridiculous and they will lose followers.
      Sounds like Wool and Folk was a rip off. The $1000 you spent for the 4 of you was a rip off. You can’t sugar coat it. Doesn’t Lamb and Kid charge $40 a skein and they didn’t put a skein of yarn in the goodie bag? Shame on the sponsors. People will not forget it. They can’t control the weather but they certainly control the experience.

    I did enjoy your recap of Rhinebeck weekend, and shamelessly wanted to hear the scoop of the controversy.
    I just enjoy your personality. I’m afraid I have no tips on empty nesting even though I am 60 I have been raising two grandkids for some years now, I would pay somebody to give me an empty nest many days. Tough being “a single mom” and it’s good to have knitting for sanity.

    Shocker! As a South African ($1 = R20) I would be LIVID if I had paid $250 for what you described. Guess you now have THE most expensive yarn related business card collection. Goodness!!

    Hi Gina, I truly appreciate your candor and kindness! If you recall, you sat across from me at the W&F dinner (it was 4-9pm) and I wish it had been a far better experience (I also purchased the warm up ticket). I'm glad you did have fun all weekend, as seeing people and the community at large, helped make up for some of what went wrong. I've been processing my emotions, and feel so heartbroken for the vendors and other attendees. On top of that, I brought the band, and we also had to power thru countless issues Thursday and Friday that should never have happened. Like the vendors, the band powered thru like the pros they are. It was disappointing to learn that people were asking where the music was...as the band had a sound check at 11am, only to not get to play until 5pm. Now I'm furiously knitting them hats and scarves, as they so knit-worthy! #olivetreemadmen

  • @Rebelmusedesign
    @Rebelmusedesign 11 месяцев назад +22

    Great video….I think the organizer of W&F should offer AT LEAST partial reimbursements to the vendors affected (booth fees) as well as some sort of discount to the attendees who paid so much for a ticket. Just my opinion. ❤

  • @illusion1528
    @illusion1528 11 месяцев назад +12

    Magpie paid for a double booth and got stuck in that smaller booth by the bathroom. Small indie dyers definitely got the worst of it, but some of the the big vendors and sponsors were definitely mistreated as well.

    Thanks for the juicy recap! It sounds like there was “fleecing” going on. Too soon to joke? It’s like the knitting version of the Fyre Festival. I would totally watch a Netflix documentary about it. :) Congratulations on winning Rhinebeck. Also love how real you were with how certain vendors aka L&k did at the event. Made me laugh when you were deciding if Caitlyn could come to dinner with y’all. I’ll be honest and say that I used to love CJ but every podcast now is shoving L&K down everyone’s throats.

    I attended a local festival in Maryland on Saturday (the weekend after). It was free, 30 minutes from my home and many of the vendors were also at W&F. It wasn’t a crowed disaster and I was able to see the yarn, engage with the vendors and had a great time. Some of these vendors honestly looked shell shocked and offered up the fact they had a hellacious time at W&F. I bought the same yarn that was offered at W&F and didn’t have to pay $50 bucks to walk around. 3 of us then had a fantastic lunch in a beautiful downtown Frederick restaurant across the street from Magpie’s flagship store -total cost for all 3 with tips and wine was $90. No Rosemary and no fennel. Then we walked around Magpie’s and bought some of that loveliness. Personally, I think some of these festivals are out of control. My advice…support local festivals. I had a blast.

    Thanks for the recap. Your sweaters are gorgeous and love how you each had your own color. Brilliant idea. The W & F situation sounds like it was driven by greed. This wasn’t the first year, so the organizers had experience and knew what to expect and plan for. I was one of the people who donated to the Go Fund Me to support her store even though I live in California and had nothing to benefit from it. I just wanted her to succeed and a lot of money was raised only to find out she closed her shop. I would think that W&F has lost it’s audience and she needs to take some time to self-reflect. Thank you for being really honest about what happened there. Glad that the rest of the weekend was fun.

    I so love your sense of humor, Gina! ❣️ I appreciated your take on the Rhinebeck weekend events, and your Rhinebeck sweater was gorgeous. I didn’t get to go this year, and am kind of glad because of the weather. The first and only time I got to go was 2019, and the weather was pefect! I saw you from a distance because I've been a viewer for years, but I was too intimidated to go up to you. Hopefully one of these years I can see you again and tell you in person what a beautiful light you are to so many. I introduced your podcast you to all of my knitting friends and now you have quite a little fan club here in the far west suburbs of Chicago. ❣️ You are the best! ⚘️

    I always get a bit excited when I see you have released a podcast! Thank you for your candid report and I hope you don't get in any hot water by naming names. I did not go to Rhinebeck as I recently had knee replacement surgery and was not ready to do that much walking. And here's hoping Marcella's sweater is almost done! One more thing....empty nest stuff....please remind yourself that you have done your job as a parent when your young adult child is strong and brave enough to leave home for college, the service, whatever it is. They cannot leave when they don't have enough self-worth and positive self-esteem. I live in Ohio (but I am a born and raised Virginian) and my youngest left for Florida State years ago. Reminding myself that I must have done something right was the only thing that kept me from wallowing in self pity. Much love to you.

    I disagree that LoloBean or Magpie did well….. LBYC wasn’t actually a vendor and Magpies “booth” was stuck in the path of the stinky bathroom. I didn’t know there was a top floor and I was personally in an outdoor booth when a table full of yarn was knocked over into the mud. My shoes were totally mud caked and I thought the whole thing was a shit show. Don’t even get me started on Lamb and Kid as they acted like they were the only show in town!

    Gina…thank you for your honesty! Going to Wool and Folk on Friday was a disaster, we went during the afternoon, it was a fire hazard to even try to walk inside any of the buildings, felt completely claustrophobic. We had no place dry to eat our food or even sit down, which we purchased from the food trucks. Just an unfortunate experience to have to pay for! Never again! Shame on the organizers!

    Hi Gina, I appreciate you filling us all in on how the festival went. I've heard the Wool & Folk building was so full of people that you couldn't move even if you wanted to leave. I can't stand being trapped so that would have been my worst nightmare. I really like your straight talk. Your sweaters were gorgeous! That same weekend I went to the Southeastern Animal Fiber Festival (SAFF) in Fletcher, NC just outside Asheville. It was a great time, I spent too much money and I would have loved to spend more. This was the first time I've ever gone to a fiber festival. I loved it, it's so fun to talk to fellow knitters. I watch knitting podcasts all the time so I'm sure I would have recognized a lot of people at Rhinebeck. I watch Leslie's podcast too, she does look good in everything. I didn't know she was a model. I totally agree with you about spending the $250 for dinner. If you had known, you would have bought yarn instead. That's at least enough money for a sweater's quantity of cashmere yarn, or yak yarn. You live and you learn.... right? Have a great week!

    I’m knititng on my second Friend to Friend shrug as I watch you … I LOOOOOVE Leslie with all capital letter and heck yah, I wish that dream ( of rooming with you ) would ever come true … but I will be happy if I can go next year and just get one of those thousands of hugs you gave away this year… my dream will come true and I swear I’m not a stocker, just love your yarn, your personality and have done so since I started knitting 25 years ago. Thanks for the Rhineback Recap … I do agree with you. I’m a little worried to make such a long trip - I live in Portland, OR - but I still think it will be worth it if I can meet you and Leslie of course.
    I’m also experiencing empty nest ( my son moved out a year ago and my daughter about 3 months ago with our grandson) and that is one of the reasons I also started an RUclips podcast. To Keep me busy doing something I love and this way I knit even more. I know you will get through it, but I feel it’s also ok to be sad and experience each phase of our lives and just enjoy the good of each one. Sending you big hugs ( because I wasn’t at Rhineback to get a real one ha ha ). Was this comment long or what ??? Thanks again for another great episode 😘

    Love your videos. My husband is a VT grad. I couldn’t say hi to you at Wool and Folk because of all the crazy. I have heard some of the other vendors who did well at WF like Explorer Knits and Woolens and Nosh suggest that people go and support the smaller vendors who didn’t do well. I would be surprised if there is a Wool and Folk going forward. Also, when you did that calculation of the money she brought in, my first thought was “she sure
    Didn’t spend that on the swag bags!” 😂

    Came across your podcast while binge watching reviews on Rhinebeck. Thoroughly enjoyed watching and appreciated your candid review of Wool and Folk. I’m now a subscriber and can’t wait to see more of your content.

    I absolutely love your candor!! Being a customer of yours I’ve always received more than what I ordered - you are the best!
    Also…empty nest for me was one of the most challenging times of my life. It passed, but certainly not as quickly as I wanted. 😊

    wait what!? NO YARN IN THE GOODY BAGS!? that's freakin' insane. I can't believe the price of that warm up ticket, and then to not even get a mini skein. Unreal. As you said I am quite sure there were people there, at Wool N Folk with prime PRIME locations- where they're probably looking around right now like deer in headlights - no issues with their sales- No issues with their customers accessibility. Last years Wool N Folk was great- other than the food experience. But I've learned not to depend on food at these events.... but it was surprising to hear about all the issues from this years event. I thought they had it figured out. But you're right I think the timed slots are better for big crowds. Hopefully they'll consider that for next year. We were at Rhinebeck on Sunday- so we missed all the drama. Just how we like it.

    What a great job you did on this!! 🎉 I agree with you on all this! i personally, I went online and bought from Botanical Yarn Co, mainly because they came from Scotland and her inventory was damaged. I hope everybody watches your video.

    It’s $900 one of the vendors said that was suppose to be inside and was outside and most of her yarn was ruined. Plus, she didn’t have electricity, so no lights and couldn’t use her machine to take credit cards once her battery died. They were suppose to get 2 chairs and got none. So they had to stand the whole time. One booth was told they had to break down all their boxes down to make room to share their space with another vendor. That was fine, but they needed. The boxes to repack their stuff back up in. They came back in the morning and they had taken their boxes to put on the ground for people to walk on and by coming in and grabbing the boxes they knocked a bunch of yarn in the mud!! She was told, it was to help the customers, be a team player!! Another lady after they changed venues asked about handicap parking and access they didn’t answer right away then when they did said no. She said then I need to cancel and get a refund and they told her it’s to late to cancel you can’t get a refund. What is a contract for? They didn’t meet their end!! Why aren’t they responsible for breaking their part of the contract? Contracts are to protect both parties!! They need to get all together and get their money back that lost their money!! The Sponsors paid $2500. No where they recognized. Not even on their FB page nor the vendors. No links either to the vendors. Still had all last years, so if anyone there was there last year their link is on their but not anyone new. It’s so sad. That was not a very good apology either. She made sure to have comments turned off, because she knew it sucked!

    I can’t comprehend the prices for Big Birdie yarn……as a Canadian it is not affordable and with the added costs of the exchange rate, plus shipping and duty it’s a no go. I’m sad to see the world of yarn slip into a somewhat elitist endeavor with podcasters knitting with extremely expensive yarns. It seems like greed is affecting everything across the board…

    There were 90 vendors with single booth fee of $900. Multiple vendors paid for two booths. I saw on Reddit the venue rental was 5,000-10,000

      Don't forget the sponsorships like Lola Bean Yarn Co and Magpie Fibers who donated $2500 and $3000, respectively. Wool & Folk did not even have any signs showing the names of the sponsors.

    It was my first Rhinebeck and it was sensory overload but a blast!! So many of my favorite podcasters were there (you included) and it was like seeing movie stars in person 😄I was too shy to talk to everyone I follow but maybe next time!! Thanks for your podcast - it’s a lot of fun! And I appreciate the hard work you put into it! 👍🏼

    Thanks for sharing your experience. My favorite part about Rhinebeck as meeting everyone on the hill. I’ve only been once, last year. I had major FOMO this year. I’m glad I didn’t experience the Wool & Folk this year. I have many diagnoses of the mental variety and my anxiety would have put me in the hospital. Either a medical hospital or a psych ward. I hope to go to Rhinebeck next year! I hope to get to meet you there one day 😘

    I was also at WF and was very disappointed at what I saw and left early. You ladies nailed it!!! I saw your IG post you all look gorgeous in your sweaters. Thank you Gina, Leslie and friends for brighting up my day. I'm currently knitting a pattern from Wool and Pine and love it. Yes it was a horrible weekend with all the raining and drama but I enjoyed seeing fellow knitters and crocheters.

    Dinner and some bags…for $250…I’d be so livid to have spent that kind of money for something I could get more by going to an Olive Garden for half the cost and still feed my family of 4 a good fun meal.

    I like your straight talking Gina, and your wit. I would buy your yarn but I’m in Scotland and the customs taxes and duties just make it too cost prohibitive. I can’t even buy from Europe now since Brexit, but that’s another story. I can still enjoy watching your podcast though. I’m a fan of Leslie too. I’ve knitted two of her shrugs, a butterfly blanket and two pairs of Toast wrist warmers. I love her style, but let’s face it, she would look good in a bin bag! I heard the story of the knickers malfunction 😂, but was it a sexy thong, or a pair of Bridget Jones’ big knickers?! 😅 Anyhow, I do hope the vendors who were ripped off get some of their money refunded. I bet they won’t sell many tickets next year.
