  • This procedure uses a cutting angioplasty balloon to pre-dilate the severe sub-aortic fibromuscular ring (seen below the aortic valve on the initial ventriculogram), followed by a high pressure balloon to stretch open the stenotic left ventricular outflow tract. In this Pug, the pre-operative pressure gradient across the stenosis was 120mmHg, reducing to 70mmHg post-op, a successful reduction of 42%. This novel procedure may be able to help dogs with severe clinical signs associated with subaortic stenosis where beta-blocker treatment has been inadequate.

Hi there, I have a pug with severe SAS, we were told that pugs are too small to do this procedure on, I am wondering if this surgery was successful with this pug? We are very interested.

Hi Brittany, we have performed the procedure on 2 dogs around 5kg, and another at 7.5kg. I do not think they are too small at this weight. Please feel free to email us on referrals@highcroftvet.co.uk if you have any further questions.Kieran Borgeat (DipACVIM, DipECVIM, RCVS Specialist in Veterinary Cardiology)
