Both are melancholic and emotional, but Mitsu no Yoake is far softer than the orchestral Tabi no Tochu and that is not a bad thing. Both songs will forever be etched into my heart.

I came from listening Aimer's song Sign, and.. there is no comparison. this is the only song I know of Akino Arai, and I simply love Aimer, but the unique melody this song has compared to the other song..

Plus the fact that at some point in the future Lawrence gonna passed away while Holo will live with her feeling. That scenario and the feeling we got is really well described in this song. The dance scene in the OP at the same time with the start of the reff is really well done. This song is the perfect companion for Spice and Wolf.
Both the second OP and ED are quite sad, and it has a reason for that: the second cour IS indeed more melancholic, since the elephant in the room (her immortality, his mortality and her insecurities regarding this and being alone again) begins to be addressed more directly.

Hearing these lines I can't help but imagine Lawrence beginning to forget things due to age and/or illnesses, and Holo retelling their story to him, more and more frequently as the memory degrades. At some point his mind might also start coming up with false memories, possibly those that will make him believe that Holo is not a dear person, but someone who has hurt him in the past. Or forgetting who she is entirely. And just as my mother now cares about my grandma out of love, dismissing all the hurtful things grandma does, because she knows it's not her fault and she doesn't mean it, the same way Holo might have to eventually endure all this pain, realizing it will only be getting worse, but doing her best until the very end, because that's what true love is about. The vocals here only enhance this feeling, as it gives off a vibe of pain and inevitability of the bad outcome being hidden behind kindness and compassion, but there being so much of it that it bleeds out through the intonation.
I recently watched Maquia: When The Promised Flower Blooms and this movie woke up my most disturbing existential worries i've managed to bury ages ago.
I suggest you to read the Light Novel too! They're as good if not better. It was 15 volumes of a pure pleasure for me. (There're 18 volumes, but 3 are side stories).

The second cour of S&W hits like a rock, and when I watched it it also hitted home. For that reason, I think I felt more immersed during the second half of the story because it was even more relatable than the first part

I discover this anime nowadays. I love the first opening and ending of season 1. This opening make me cry, the animation with this song are so beautiful, and i discover the traduction now. It's very deeply beautiful. My heart is touched.
Just noticed from the intro to the chorus changed the accents from a 3/4 vibe ( *1* 2 *3* 4 *5* 6) to 6/8 vibe ( *1* 2 3 *4* 5 6) without changing the tempo. Basically change where the emphasis are, so it sounds "loosen up" or more relaxed when the chorus dropped. The song feels slower due to the time between each accent is elongated. idk if that's a good explanation, but it's so cool what songs back then do to make us feel things.

Tabi no tochuu has some musical interludes that break the song's pace. mitsu no yoake is more uniform, though its may be more pop-romancy-ish.
I always felt the same way, the first one is far more dramatic, this one is almost the same feeling but more like the end of a journey.

Unfortunately, the anime skipped a few arcs/Light Novels worth of content when Holo and Lawrence were just beginning to get to know each other.
