  • Kevin Brennan put Ofcom boss Melanie Dawes under serious pressure at the DCMS committee this week on the how right-wing outlets like GB News and TalkTV have taken over British broadcast media, and how come they can propagate conspiracy theories on-air without little or no pushback from the regulator.

      Which is absolutely right, Ofcom is to stop things like adult-only content being broadcast on TV just when kids are getting home from school, it's not supposed to be a political censorship board. There's a clear double standard where political diversity is only being demanded for new channels and not existing broadcast channels. When channel 4 does a hatchet job interviewing a figure that the established left doesn't like there's no requirement for someone to appear on the same show at the same time to defend them and ask questions that let them justify their viewpoint.

    • @simonwyndham
      @simonwyndham Год назад +13

      @@Treblaine Err, Ofcom literally has a rule that states in black and white that no politician can be an interviewer on a news channel or programme. It can't really be more easy to understand than that. Don't you get it? Two serving Tory MPs interviewing another serving Tory MP is just completely against Ofcom's rules that are laid out in extremely plain and easy to understand terms. The whole point of that rule is to literally minimise political bias and stop political censorship. That's the whole damn point of it.

    • @Treblaine
      @Treblaine Год назад +1

      @@simonwyndham I cannot understand why such a "rule" exists. Is Jon Stewart a politician? He's a political campaigner that's for sure.

      “No politician may be used as a newsreader, interviewer or reporter in any news programmes unless, exceptionally, it is editorially justified. In that case, the political allegiance of that person must be made clear to the audience.”
      Unless "editorially justified".
      Not so "black and white" that is a grey area as large and as grey as as the British sky on a typical bank holiday.
      "extremely plain and easy to understand terms"

      The price cap was never going to work because it doesn't put a cap on price of producers, only suppliers. If there's a tanker full of liquefied gas and they say it costs this much and the government says "can't charge that much so can't pay that much for the gas" then the tanker just says "fuck you, I'm off the sell it to Germany instead".
      The price cap was introduced for when gas was exceptionally CHEAP, so cheap that consumers were being charged way way more than it cost to buy it from producers but these suppliers wanted to save up for a rainy day, instead they were limited and now the rainy days have well and truly come and they've got no savings.
      Most people have no idea how price caps work, they work in the exact OPPOSITE way you presume. They don't help when there's a gas shortage, they only slightly help when there's an abundance and overall they do more harm than good.

      The media has a lot to answer for in Britain in the last fifty years. The right wing echo chamber has amplified right wing lies and moved the Overton Window ever rightwards. The UK has been hijacked by a hard right cabal that poses as moderate, and has co-opted the Labour Party into its project- neoliberal hegemony. No wonder moderate social democratic policies advocated by Corbyn in 2017 and 2019 were framed as extremist/ hard left/ radical left. They were nothing of the sort but anything that does not concur with right wing lies is demonised. The response to Gary Lineker expressing an opinion proves the point. Hard right snowflakes.

      Of course there is political bias in the media. Newspapers never had to be impartial. The problem is that the owners of newspapers are now operating tv channels which is why Ofcom are looking into that very area. However has Ofcom said - GB News and Talk TV are not actually news channels - They don't do rolling news they are actually opinion based channels. The problem is Ofcom rules on impartiality in news refers to news channels not opinion channels. When people complain about a programme to Ofcom, Ofcom can only take action if the programme broke Ofcom rules, where as most of the complaints to Ofcom are from members of the public who don't agree with something. The right wing complain the BBC is left wing and the left wing accuse the BBC of being the Government's PR piece. Both of those statements about the BBC clearly cannot be right - But that's the complaints that Ofcom get from both side of the political spectrum.

    Impartial : Dame Melanie Henrietta Dawes DCB (born 9 March 1966) is a British economist and civil servant. Since February 2020 she has been Chief Executive of Ofcom. She was previously the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, and before that worked at HM Treasury, HM Revenue and Customs, and in the Cabinet Office. In January 2015, Dawes was announced as the next Permanent Secretary of the Department for Communities and Local Government, succeeding Sir Bob Kerslake. She was the first permanent secretary to be appointed under a new scheme in which the Prime Minister has the final say in the recruitment process; the PM now chooses directly from a list created by the Civil Service Commissioners, rather than only having a veto over the Commissioners' preferred candidate. She took up the position on 1 March 2015. As of 2015, Dawes was paid a salary of between £160,000 and £164,999 by DCLG, making her one of the 328 most highly paid people in the British public sector at that time
