August 21st, 2021 at Bradenton Motorsports Park (1/4 mile NHRA dragstrip).
Running on the stock Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires (21”), while racing against the fastest full-bodied cars we could find.
Race #, ET, MPH, Reaction, 60-ft, Mode, W/L Margin, Vs
    Tesla: 9.941. 140.99, 0.367, 1.54, W by 0.1103 (Plaid Mode)
    Demon: 10.38. 135.52, 0.038, 1.78, L by 0.1103
This race was in “Plaid Mode” (NOT “Drag Strip” mode and did not use launch control). The accelerator was not at full during the entire race, in an effort not to run faster than 9.90.
Note: ET’s always exclude Reaction Times! The time from Green Light to the finish line is the total of RT + ET. ET is the time from actually crossing the Start Line to crossing the Finish Line, irrespective of the driver's reaction to the light.
Trackside footage courtesy of Lue at the Solarshiftz channel! Check it out for live footage of all my races!
Thanks to Thomas for this fun race!

NHRA really need to revisit the rules for modern cars. I get that it was probably something needed back when people were commonly running 60's / 70's muscle cars capable of mid 9's with massive mods but still equipped with the same (lack of) safety in the vehicle design. Both the Tesla and Demon would be safer running low 9's at 150+ than a built 60's / 70's muscle car running even low 11's.

Expecting extreme luxury and amazing build quality but don't care about performance or economy? Go with a Merc or something. :)
Tesla makes really amazing drivetrains and has great software to run it, but they're certainly not amazing at making a luxury vehicle. Great video as always! Regarding your dedicated track car:
There's another thing to consider about trying to get it into the 8s. Look at the power ramp curve Tesla published when Plaid was announced. Rate of power ramp-up is limited to protect drivetrain (and limit spinning on stock tires). In other words, you don't get full power immediately off the line, as you know (same with my P100D).
Power ramp up from 0 to about 50mph is the same for Raven and Plaid. That's why 60ft times right now for the Plaid are no better than Raven, despite the huge power difference. If that could be modified to ramp up faster in the Plaid (currently it can't), that along with sticky tires, weight reduction in the cabin, and lighter wheels, these combined would make a HUGE improvement.
I'm friends with some very good Tesla software hackers. Gonna contact them to see if there's any way the power ramp curve can be modified/customized and saved to memories. It would likely void any warranty, I'm sure. And risk drivetrain damage. But to make the fastest Plaid in the world....

More from other companies will follow in Tesla’s foot steps in making electric ⚡️ cars & there are plenty of modified cars out there that can beat it now (there’s always someone faster no matter what car you have).

Andrew, as usual, you never fail to post a really great video... Watched Leu's coverage and the dominance of your car still amazes me. With those 3 150+ runs, did you pedal it at the end, or just kept a FENDER ahead of the opposition? Friend is getting a leased Plaid and can't wait for a little demonstration. 30 years ago had a highly modified Buick GN that I used to have an HKS (foreign car) adjustable boost gage with 4 settings from 8 lbs. To 22 lbs. Of boost. Much fun and very profitable just staying 1/2 to one car length in front of my opponent. It added roughly 50+ HP everytime I went 1 boost level higher. 30 years ago turbos were still BLACK MAGIC to most racers, especially on the street with McCreary 15 inch tires. At e- Town ran 10.00's at 135, just about unbeatable street car at the time. You dominance brought back many sweet memories of a middle age misspent!!!

Thanks for these bite-sized race videos. They are still great fun to watch! It will be interesting to see how your new Plaid Model S performs compared to the current one on the 21" wheels/tires. The Dodge Demons are very interesting, being truly streetable, drag race focused, factory race cars. The Ford Mustang Cobra Jet and Camaro COPO factory drag race cars are formidable, but hardly versatile, or street legal. The Demon, and later Redeye Hellcat models are both quick and fast, but can be easily driven on the street. With that said, the trick for those models always seems to be traction on stock tires. I always thought that the Hellcat models should have had AWD from the factory, whereas only the truck versions ever did. This Demon had a relatively slow 60' time, and it could have probably ran a high 9 second time if it had pulled off a 1.40 60' time. I don't think that I've seen a factory-stock Demon run that famous advertised 9.65@140MPH time yet, although all of the Hellcat models do respond well to drag racing tweaks. Which you have seen first-hand at the track!

His burnout was subpar due to a line lock issue. He warned me beforehand that this might happen. I took a relaxed tree (0.367). He nailed his at 0.038. That was perfect for what I wanted to show: both cars pulling hard side-by-side from about 100ft. I wasn’t surprised that I had to pedal it later to stay above 9.90, but it was nice to have that power in case I needed it. (I would have pushed it harder to stay ahead if needed, after all he doesn’t have a cage either, just like that last Redeye race a couple weeks ago where I ran a 9.70 to beat him by a nose.)

      NHRA RULES

    • @Albertkallal
      @Albertkallal 2 года назад +1

Tracks want to be able to state they are NHRA sanctioned. So what happens when some one comes to the track with a custom built drag car doing over 150 mph in the qtr mile and low 9's?
Well that's a fully custom built drag car. So track rules state that when you drop below 10 seconds? You are going too fast and thus must equip your car with a roll cage. You also must attach and have a parachute that deploys at the end of the run.
But no one on planet Earth, Mars, or from Zentar EVER thought that a 4 door family car with stock tires for getting groceries or daily driving to work would also produce dragster performance times like the Tesla.
So yes, they require a parachute and also require a roll cage in such dragster cars for reasons of safety.
So the problem is the Tesla is going too fast according to the national hot rod association that most dragster and drag strips who's rules they follow.
So unless that 4 door grocery shopping car that's also producing drag strip times that gets a parachute and roll cage?
He will get kicked out until his nice quiet family sedan get the appropriate drag strip equipment. However they do let him drive if he babies the throttle and does not run below 10 seconds. (They allow about .1 below that and will not give you trouble). Any faster and you breaking the track rules.
So he can go to fast - but once a roll cage and parachute is installed? He can return to running low 9's and over 150 mph in the qtr mile.
      If you read this far?
Beyond any comprehension that this cute 4 door family car can go so fast that according to NHRA drag strip rules he needs roll cage and a parachute.
Like I said: is this car really from planet Earth?
Nuts! And beyond breath taking what this Tesla car and technology does.

Under the most rare and perfect conditions (perfect temperature, DA, and humidity plus a tailwind, perfect traction, and maybe downhill) I’ve seen a stock Demon run 9.90s. Any faster requires modifications. And as all drag racers know, “once modified, there’s always someone faster”.

That demon 60 ft. Is pretty poor, especially considering the tires used. I used to get those 1.6's consistently from my honda crx

He has run 1.30s before. His burnout was subpar due to a line lock issue. That’s why I took a relaxed tree; so that I wouldn’t get out on him early…

Enjoy these gas vs electric races, or drag races in general. Once everythings electric, this sport is as good as dead since nobody will be watching it.

This is definitely a great moment in history. When the balance of power is tilting. I love a great sounding engine as much as anybody (but not just loud of the sake of loud, and not from my neighbors at 3am).
I've noticed lots of young people flocking to the Teslas in the staging lanes, more than to other cars, so maybe the next generation may take an interest. But being able to modify, customize, and tune these EVs must happen soon. The recent EV crate motors released from Ford and Chevy are a big step in the right direction!

@@TeslaPlaidChannel the future generation seems to be just interested in tech i noticed. Some younger people talk about autonomous drag racing or track racing and think that would be fun. If you think about it, it just won't work, since no one would watch these races. Also, mods will be tough, since they will ONLY be about power, not modding the character or anything of the car, which will minimize the things you could do to your car.
Nothing against EVs, but dragracing will just be a thing as long as gas engines are around. Appreciate the fact that you appreciate Gas cars and EVs. Right now, to have the choice is what makes it all so great. When EVs are all we got, we will have a serious problem in variety of cars.

@@hasangenc2922 Perhaps, but I’d like to rebuild my ‘69 Camaro Rally Sport someday, with an EV crate motor. I think there will be enough choice to make things interesting. How many electric motors? (1-4?) How much battery? Just enough for 10 passes or enough to take it on a 400 mile trip?
A fun time to have both as options.
ICE hobbyists are wrongly being legislated out of their hobby in some states (CA!), but nice to have a fall-back approach…

@@TeslaPlaidChannel EVs are just the first step in an autonomous future, so crate motors will just be a temporary thing before the whole world turns to fully autonomous vehicles. It will take some years, but its coming. Once new ICE cars gets banned in ten years, we are a bigger step in that direction already. Only a matter of time. Autonomous cars work the best in autonomous fleets. Plus Elons goal is fully autonomous traffic. No fatalities anymore.
I get what you mean, but i think we should enjoy it as it is, and then forget about motorsports, carscene and stuff. All of this won't work in an all electric future.
