  • We rose early and headed to Ely East train station. Dad had visited the day prior, connecting with the engine room staff who kindly allowed us to observe their preparations for our ride. Around 8 a.m., we checked in at the main office, submitting our written exam and signing waivers. With formalities done, we made our way back to the train, ready for our journey. Jim served as our engineer, with Bill as our fireman. Initially passengers, Jim guided us out of the yard, conducting start-stop exercises to familiarize us with the controls. I took the first leg of the journey, navigating numerous road crossings and two tunnels. Passing the reins to Dad, he led us until a turnaround point, where Jim took measurements. Dad then piloted the third leg, and I tackled the final, more technical stretch, maneuvering through downhill sections with multiple brake applications. After completing the trip, we received our certificates, officially certified as train engineers. It was an incredible experience shared with my dad.
