Nice, Im doing this early in Nov 12-18th with Orca Norway and on the same ship. Hopefully it's a little less dark and murky, but still amazing. Can't wait!! Canadian too, and in medicine lol (though I went to the US for residency). Small world. Good luck in residency, kick ass. What travel insurance did you use?
You're going to absolutely love it :) Really wish I was heading back this year, so please send my best to Pierre, Sebastian and the crew when you see them. Going in November should help a great deal with the visibility 🤙 I was still under my dad's policy at the time so Manulife I believe. Enjoy!
Great vid! Looking to do this trip in November of this year. The boat that you went on seems to be booked up, but their other boat has availability in November, which is when I want to go do you know if there is any significant differences or are they basically the same exact experience just different boatsalso how did you decide on this company? I am also looking at waterproof expeditions. thanks.
Thanks dude - would highly recommend November over December in terms of overall daylight exposure. They end up putting everyone together on a single boat - that way it’s easier to coordinate with the zodiacs that pick up the divers and chase down the herring / look for orcas. Everyone gets to hang out together and the informational presentations take place in the dining hall. You return to your home boat at night just to sleep. I chose Orca Norway because Pierre is regarded as one of the formost orca experts in the world. He has great success finding orcas - although it’s definitely not guaranteed and many times the orcas just aren’t cooperative. Success rates on a 4 day trip are > 50% I believe though. Also the convenience of all meals supplied and transportation to and from the orca fields - Tromso is very important. From my understanding, every few years the herring migration routes change slightly, so the orca tours need to adjust and leave from different places. We were in skarjovoy but it’s entirely possible that these days, they might be leaving from else where. In all cases, you’ll still be flying into Tromso, so you’re going to need transportation. Contact a few different outfitters, ask questions, compare prices and chose your favorite one 🤙 if you end up on orca Norway, show Pierre this video and tell him I say hi. Good luck with it - experience of a lifetime in every aspect.
Hi Erik :) those sounds are 100% real and authentic - you will hear them when swimming with the orcas. In this case however I wasn't very happy with the quality of the audio from my action camera, so thankfully I was able to borrow some audio from one of my friends who was swimming next to me on the same trip and enhanced it slightly. The sound vibrations are quite impressive when you are in the water though
Many of the photographers had DSLR cameras and setups that cost more than $5000, but all I had was the hero 10 black and this is this quality of footage that I was able to get - which I was happy with :) Unfortunately, the water is very dark at this time of year because of the low sunlight. So you need to keep this in mind when deciding on your settings, external lights, etc.

I believe that the live aboard experience was approx $4-5K USD when I was there approx. 2 years ago. People have told me that the cost has since increased regardless of operator. This includes food, all diving gear, live aboard accommodations and educational seminars. As a general rule, between flight from North America (if that's where you're leaving from), petty cash and the experience itself, I would allocate approx. $6 - 8K USD per person for an "economy" trip.
