Hi Dave hope u are well? Another great review! U are particularly good at the antenna reviews I think its your engineering background that shines through when u explain things when it comes to how they are constructed and what materials are used. Great stuff as usual.
Gary g1fsh Thank you Gary. I worked at a specialist engineering and bolt threading company for twelve years and back in the early 90's fabricated all the foundation bolt assy' (some getting on for 100 dia!) for the Pepsi-max roller coaster ride at Blackpool. I welded them all up too. So that's how I understand about threads. But it does help understanding what your looking at for sure and thanks for the kind comments.
Nice video M0OGy. You forgot to mention that the gain of 7.65 dB is relative to an (imaginary) isotropic antenna (dBi). The true gain would be relative to a dipole antenna (dBd), which is around 3.0 to 3.5 dB(d). Nevertheless this antenna is in terms of quality, construction and usability very good!
I FOUND ABOUT 5 OF THESE ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD . They were not all complete with connectors and bottoms although a couple were . I found in front of a house who owns a business plumbing I believe I think They changed out their vans systems .
I have an original green ABS1600 up and has been up for at least 13 years. I am looking at getting a ground plane kit for it as to me it doesn't perform well
Nice clean looking antenna Dave, although the riveting job on the SO239 plate didn't look the best, perhaps threaded bolts into a thread might be better. Nice review Dave....and the grass on the front lawn looks nice too ;)
26TANGOMIKE037 Thanks Mark and I'm not a lover of alloy rivets TBH. But they are very secure. I cut the grass prior to the review as it was rather long.......LOL
I never had one of these,s but it looks like a good bit of kit look better built than Antron 99 Hard to get the BIG stick not sure if they still sell them
The top section, how long is it? If the top section os 102 inch a stainless steel whip would work. It also will let you run more power to it. Say 1500 watts. But that's if the top section is 102 inches long. The fiberglass top section is the liming factor as to how much power it will handle. Hope it is 102inch.
Hi Dave I've just saw your video on your new antenna and I think it's really good and we'll made and thought out properly as well. I'd really would like another Shakespeare ABS 1600 because that was the best antenna for the 11 meters and also the 10 meters so I don't know if the company shakespeare still make them because I would really like to get my hands on one of those very soon to put up in my back garden again but I'll manage and there's got to be a shop somewhere that sells the antenna I'm saying about ok. Best 73s Dave and I'll speak to you very soon then mate ok cheers Stephen M3SNV.
Thanks for the review Dave...No one beats these guys for build quality, sadly i think they lost out in the CB market the Gainmaster will blow this thing away..Its way too pricey for a CB halfwave but i supose you get what you pay for.
charlieoscar09 That's correct it performs as good as any other decent half wave. But it really is in a different ball park build quality wise, but many CBers won't pay more than £100 for an antenna that's a fact.
I don't know about using that on the CB band 2700 it may work who knows lol I don't know anyone that used it on a CB radio please let me know if it works on the CB Bands thank you have a great day
Just because it's designed for a boat doesn't mean it doesn't work on the CB Band, that's the frequency it is designed for, I don't really get where you are coming from TBH. It is a very expensive antenna though 🙂 shakespeare-ce.com/marine/product/176-1-marine-big-stick-cb-antenna/
hi dave just wondering is it still possible to get a Shakespeare super big stick new I'm debating on witch vertical antenna to bye antron 99 imax 2000 serio 827 or super big stick in your view which would u recamand
Edward Cunningham I recommend the Sirio 827 or the Sirio tornado 27, they both have excellent gain considering that they are verticals. The antron and imax 2000 pick up too much floor noise, poor on receive and decent for transmitting. 73
hi dave nice shakey i have the very same one brand new i plan to stick up at the back of the shack as u say really are a first class bit of kit not like the crap turned out now first bit of a bluster and it resembles a banana lol i agree with one of the comments posted i also dont like were they mounted the so 259 ? as its a awkward position to try and waterproof with a rubber boot ! any way all the best dave keep up the good reviews 73s
The antenna loock´s great, but i don´t like the way the connector so 239 is placed, and what they use to secure it... But very good on the other things.
Interesting video, i used the Shakepeare Big Stick back in the 1990s was not aware they still made them. this looks like a modern improved version. Thank you for the Video Dave. P.S. we still up for that pint?
I have the first original Big Stick in my Garage ready as a back up base antenna. Its a piece of CB radio History.
Yours was the only RUclips 😮 This is what we used back in the day. Now I have more info 👍

Hi Dave, I’m using a big stick from the 1970s, works really well.
Can you do a update, The Big Stick 6 years later?
First cb base antenna i ever owned!!!

I used one of these cut down for 28.2 mHz and ran a 10 metre beacon for 12 years 24 hours a day using the call sign ZS1J/B from 1993 to 2005.
They have always made very high quality antennas.
I had a 5/8 Shakespeare super big stick in the 1980s.
The SO239 wasn't side mounted.

The mounts look well made and heavy duty. The top section looks very much like a Antron middle. I think Shakespeare make fishing rods these days.
fredintheshed1 Yes indeed they make fishing poles.
The top section is very thin, about the size of an A99 groundplane kit section.
Dave, who sells that HD mount in the UK? Shakespeare doesn't Market it in the U.S.

The torque on that mount must be pretty crazy relative to other antennas.

Get the A-99.. excellent antenna at a good price
Do you know what the replacement top section number is?
I'm a South African and are looking for a big stick How would i get one in South Africa
Just use a silver rod
Are you going to do a on air review
Is it a coaxial sleeve dipole?
How is that antenna tunable???

128mark Thanks Mark for your kind comments Mate
128mark Thanks Mark for your kind comments Mate
How do you ground it
HOW MUCH RMS AND PEP WATTS CAN IT HANDLE ?
The antenna loock´s great, but i don´t like the way the connector so 239 is placed, and what they use to secure it...
But very good on the other things.
***** Yes I agree
Available in the USA but be ready to pay a lot.

26ok039 Yes we are, PM me about a time and date.
What about grd plane
3/8 x 24tpi, we'd screw mobile ant's in place just to test them
The boat mount is not plated it’s polished stainless steel.
Upper rod is threaded 3/8-24 tpi not 14.
nah nothing an Antron cant do just as good i have both of these works better with a ground plane kit on 10mtrs
you got to ground it.
