I do think a lot of the professionals move to ITB because of workflow. Its just so much faster in terms of recall and revisions, and you can take it anywhere. Time is money. On that level, I get it. Plus, as we all know, one can get a fantastic mix ITB its just a different type of skill and requires a bit of a different approach. I think its "easier" for them for those reasons. Now, if they want to work with a company to make a plugin that fits their personal workflow - I personally don't have a problem with that. I have several times, wished a certain type of plugin existed that doesn't - and if I was as big of an engineer as them, I may actually hit up a plugin company to make my thing, if only for me. Idk if that makes sense. Regarding EQs, man idk - some analog EQs sound so freaking good. I still haven't found a plugin EQ that sounds like a curve bender, or like an API.
I get it that today's engineers have to do what they got to do. But they should be honest about it. As far EQ, (compared to HW compressors) in general a plugin can get the job done. I have outboard eq's but this before plugins got better. I do want Massive Passive, but I don't think I need it, not at 6k (I'll buy one used). I am just a gear head. I compared the SSL eq's with my hardware eq's and it's there bro. Even MB says he loves 9000 plugin and it sound like the real thing to him. That's all I was saying about eq. @@Platnumbaby Subscribed! Good to know about the SSL EQs! If youre in the market for a Mass Pass, Id recommend checking out the Wes Audio Tube EQ. A lot of engineers say it sounds better, and its 1k cheaper (The MP can tend to sound smeary and is very very sensitive to gainstaging, especially low end, likely due to the xformers.). Alternatively, the new IGS 825 EQ looks freaking sick. I am currently torn between all three. All of that being said, you already have a Manley VM, one of my favs, and hundreds of hit records have been made with the Manley VM + MP combo on the master buss and they sound pretty damn good
At 3:20 you "quote" this engineer saying "now you don't need monitors". But he never said that. He said he does most of his mixing and starts with headphones, yet he still uses monitors (and he even promotes the use of 9.1.6 setups, which is a lot of speakers). @Platnumbaby Studio true there is nothing like analog today plugins try to match analog gear and there is no way to get that organic sound for me i do my best to keep analog on my bass an drums and your right there is a comp out that says you can use an analog button on it that gives you that white noise that analog creates organically lol which its not its just an fx they added it at this point they cant copy analog now they do record stuff and turn them into samples which turns it digital so that's a different when mastering. Good video you should dig deeper in this you onto to something
Most of us watching this know enough about creating music. Grammys are being won by works done in the box. Analog gear will still capture your recordings the best. Go in analog. But After that, you're better off all in the box mixing. The difference in software vs hardware at the mixing stage is minimal, negligible and not worth the extra thousands. Imho
@@KeithMarvK thanks it s not the argument about which one is better. It’s that they make it seem as you don’t need it. That’s the lie!!! The Grammy are won because of analog sound and not just the mixes them selves.
@Platnumbaby I don't think analog is needed at the mixing stage. The software is amazing these days. But I'm absolutely an advocate for using analog in the recording stage. It's a must!
@ The advantage he has is the clients he works with already records everything in world class studios and already run through the best gear money can buy. So the mix is damn near done by the time he gets the session. The clients we work with don’t even know how to set the gain on the mic and don’t buy the stems to the beat or they just take the beat off RUclips. 🤣🤣🤣
@Iike I said 75%+ of hit records are in the box. The notion that you need analog gear or the fact that analog gear will get you better mixes is rubbish. Some analog gear does have qualities to it that can’t be achieved in the box but it’s left to be seen in the final results in 2024
The guy you're referring to is right (and I think I know who you're talking about). But the truth is, you don't need analog gear. He's referring to, you don't need tens of thousands of dollars worth of outboard equipment to make music. Of course plugins can get you to a finished production. You may say, "well you need outboard gear because what about the mic?" That's not what he's referring to. He's simply talking about audio processing and effects. Now you may wonder, "then why does analog gear cost more?" Well the truth is, analog gear has to be soldered component by component. So there's labor costs. Also, those components cost money. So there's another cost for parts. They need to pay for the location where the gear is built, etc. And each unit they make, they have to pay additional in costs. On the other hand, software is different... Once you code a plugin, that's the unit. You then sell thousands of copies from just one plugin build. You see the difference? To sum everything up: Analog gear isn't needed. But some analog gear may sound better than some plugins on the market. Regardless, you can make music with either.
@@CaptainCricket3D it’s not about making music, it’s about capturing the music. Your music may sound good but does it feel good. That’s the difference. Thanks please like and subscribe. Great feedback

Nothing has been debunked that is a fking lie. Thanks, great recordings comes from analog, name one song that was recorded digital without any analog? Not mixed but recorded, that is heard all over the world that people love. I'll be impress if you can. Name just one. That great mix you talking about starts with analog, that's the point. You can't record one sound without analog, that's the point. I think I know who you are talking about. If it is who I think it is, I stopped taking anything he said seriously for quite some time. What these "famous mix engineers" leave out of the story is, yes you can mix ITB but the tracks they received have been recorded on world class ANALOG gear that has been properly recorded, performed and processed from a console. They are not working with a Focusrite 2i2 with vocals on a Rode NT out of someone's bedroom, basement or garage and are working with house money. Plugins have a place but they are not part of the incoming signal to a the tape machine or Pro Tools. The majority of these engineers are sponsored shills for these corporations whose agenda is to separate your funds from your wallet. Hardware compressors obliterate plugins and I would venture to say the same is true with inductor EQs as those can be pushed while remaining musical and adding body to the signal even in bypass. Analog keeps the source material 3d while digital makes things flat. The funny thing is people will claim digital is "just as good" but then ask yourself why is it every other day a new saturation, lo fi, analog emulator, fake tape machine hits the market? Mixing out the box or with a controller is faster and more efficient and like you said these top selling records are not being made and mixed soley with a mouse and keyboard although the marketers will try to convince you otherwise. My Sales Engineer at Sweetwater, who has done tons of professional work in film and composing, hipped me to the game and half truths a few back so thankfully I avoided a lot of the mistakes and bad purchases. One of the gems he shared was get the best mic you can afford as it should be the biggest investment in your signal chain, followed by a great preamp and then a good to decent compressor. This is backed up by multiple engineers that I have read in multiple books and magazines regarding the subject. He said otherwise you will never get the sound you are looking to capture and create in digital. I asked him point blank are these famous engineers on RUclips misleading and lying to us?... He said yes, absolutely yes. He said they are not telling you the entire process of recording and leaving out a lot of important details.

Scheps has been mixing almost exclusively on headphones for a very long time... over a decade? (He started just after Tchad Blake did the same.) Very famously, he always mixed on Sony MDR-7506's and JUST switched to Audeze (who now sponsor him). He checks that mix on monitors (old Tannoys I believe), but mixing in headphones is very much not a new development for him. It's what has worked +for him+. I've, personally, never heard him say that mixing in monitors is wrong (which is a crazy statement) but.. if that's what you heard...I won't doubt ya.

😅@@Platnumbaby yes show that video and timestamp please. Because what I heard in his video for Audeze is not that he's mixed on headphones exclusively for 2 years, what he actually said is that it took him 2 years to choose the Audeze set that suits him best to replace his old Sony 7506. He's been mixing predominantly on headphones for almost 10 years, if you followed him you should know that because he said that many, many times
@@Platnumbaby OH! He's talking +exclusively+ about ATMOS/immersive mixes. He's saying that, given that your Atmos mix HAS TO fold down to headphones and that's where most ppl are gonna listen to it anyway, then you might as well START your ATMOS mix with headphones... That makes perfect sense.
He was talking about mixing Dolby Atmos in the new headphones not mixing in general. He never said “stop mixing on monitors buy my headphones” Context is key man. Also, he didn’t say YOU don’t need analog gear anymore. He said he doesn’t use it anymore. Tracking thru analog gear and mixing ITB are 2 completely different concepts and can also live in tandem. Just because you record thru outboard gear doesn’t mean you need to mix thru it too.

Thanks for the feedback, I hope you subscribe and we can continue to have conversations like this in the future. CUNDA Music
This engineer is one of thos who constantly rethink their job. He's used and showed many times his protools mixing template and he says it's always evolving.
@@sebguyader I understand, I said he (at 2:45)generalized that you find mixing with monitors is wrong. I look at the overall context of the message and the product he is selling and the fact that he mislead for years the idea of mixing in the box without clarification that you need hardware.

@@TheLouDog420 keep that same hunger and you will
The guy you're referring to is right (and I think I know who you're talking about).
