I've never experienced heat and humidity like that in Bangkok. The strangest thing about it is the number of large abandon hotels. The heat during the day averaged from the upper 90's to the lower 100's. The humidity was unbearable. While the people all seem friendly in the hotels its very different in the streets. Its a very dangerous place for pedestrian traffic. Not many crosswalks and the motorcycles appear out of nowhere from every direction.

I still live in Thailand. This was not a comparison video. I just had to escape the pollution for a week. Now I am back and it’s bad as ever in Na Jomtien. I may relocate to Samui. Thailand still my # 1
I think the video simply shows the air pollution problem in Thailand. It doesn't account for the the beauty of Thai culture and Thai people. So it's not a comparison video as much as it is an awareness about the air pollution in Thailand. I love Bangkok and would love to live there but I have asthma and it might not be good for me.
Hey Greeny. I went 20 years ago. Could only get there by boat. There was no development. I can’t believe you’re video. What a change. Nobody believed me about the sand and the water. At least that has not changed. A beautiful part of Vietnam.
The gas and diesel exhaust is a real killer. Did you find an idealic little low cost island we could call Paradise? Looks like a great place to just be.
Are you gonna let us know about infrastructure? How can they manage with English there? How was the Internet speed? How good is the food there? Is it international? can I get anything I want? How was the healthcare compared to Thailand? Do they have lively nightlife? Your first introductory video seems to be avoiding what has generally been considered the major advantages of Thailand over other countries in Southeast Asia. Hit us up with these major comparisons that tourists want to know about. Thanks for the video.
You seem to be saying what I'm thinking..... "Is Thailand REALLY my best option. Or am I being too forgiving towards the "Land of Smiles'" drawbacks which I notice appear to be exponentially growing, yet I kinda try to pretend I don't notice are exponentially growing (with seemingly government approved, or even encouraged, Thai jingoism and anti-farang racially based xenophobia being not the least of those)? One can only be disliked and patently unwanted for so long, before feelings of reciprocation consequentially and quite naturally begin to kick in.
Good questions. First thing I noticed when I arrived in Bangkok was the air quality. By looking up not because it made me uncomfortable or short of breath. I didn't notice any of that at all. Actually. I'm going to Bangkok May 28th, arriving May 30th and hopefully we'll be there for a year. After that, I'll decide if it's the place to live for me or whether someplace like Vietnam would be a better choice. They're definitely lots of hoops that you have to jump through in Thailand, there is scamming. But I love Thailand and looking forward to the next year. Thanks for putting the video out.
That looks like a good escape for a while. Are you looking to relocate from Pattaya or just escape for a while? If you want to cool off and see something different you could visit Sapa in the north Vietnam highlands and enjoy some hiking and have a hotel with a view of the terraced rice fields. You could also hit a view other places from Hanoi.
I never hear you talk about the Philippines. Is there anything about the Philippines? That you don't like because they have some beautiful little areas. And beaches
Last trip there the food sucked, infrastructure sucked seemed shady and dangerous. Was the worst experience of my life. Then again I had Covid during the whole trip so that may have been the root cause 😂. Definitely planning on going back and giving it another shot
There is no place that is perfect, living anywhere long term you will find things that are challenging. I’m fortunate to have a place in Krung Thep and in the country, I get to enjoy the seclusion of the countryside and the convenience of the city. I have traveled quite a bit, 48 states and 2 territories in the US, all over Europe and many areas of Asia including the Philippines and love the people, culture, language, foods, access to healthcare and ease of transportation that Thailand affords for me thats the place that makes me happy.
I was in Thailand last Sep & Oct (2023). Outside of Bangkok and Pattaya, it was a ghost town. I drove down to Koh Chang for a few days. Stayed in White Sands... empty. Pretty much the same in Rayong on the way down and Ban Chang on the way back up. Felt really weird at times. Easy to get a room or table, though.
Cheap that all I can say is very affordable leases now since so overbuild. Got into the real Viet city. Coffee, beer restaurants all very cheap. Great bang for the buck there. Hopefully soon they will have a real retirement visa
Great video such a beautiful place you brought up some interesting things which I will take into consideration when I go on holiday to Vietnam later this year many thanks looking forward to seeing more of your video's
Looks amazing! Wonder how long it’s going to take for the crowds to discover it. But I agree, we are constantly Chocking our lungs out here in many parts of Thailand. Pattaya is out of control now, with horrific traffic and crowds. Heading out to Cyprus for 6-8 months this week
Well done! I am from NYC but living in Vietnam 30 years with my wife who I met in NYC in 1976. First trip to Phu Quoc was in 2001 when there were only a few sleepy hotels. The daily flight home was cancelled and so had to take a six hour ferry and another six hours by road to get back to Saigon. Of course all that’s obviously changed. I have been to that amazing community on Phu Quoc they call Amalfi and yes… it is amazing beyond belief. I know nothing officially but tend to think that eventually the authorities will look to market that area as a retirement place for foreigners. And as you said… the island has special status and they may add retirement to that but again I have no official knowledge. Like anywhere though to be fulfilled in retirement one needs some type of regular activity even if only walking for a few hours. I have just made my first trip out of Vietnam in five years being a local package tour to northern India which was incredible not to mention incredibly cheap. I really love living in this part of the world and have been to Thailand many times and enjoy my visits there too. Hope you find peace and joy here in Vietnam!
"...only walking for a few hours,..." Really? With all that concrete around you, like being inside an oven. That's why so many Thais like hanging around the shopping malls - somewhere cool.

@@ShadyD365 that’s the plan currently. My wife is Japanese so we’ll be visiting there more often if we make our home base somewhere in Thailand. We like Bangkok also but I figure that can be visited often from hua hin with the new faster train.
Too bad there are no Longer term VISA options on Vietnam. We enjoyed 30 days in country last fall, but didnt do any islands like we did in our 30 day Philipine stay. How do you spell the name of the island?
I went to Bangkok last week on a visa run (I'm spending the next few months in Da Nang), it felt so hot, despite being a similar temperature to Da Nanf, there was no air circulation making it really difficult to breathe; spent most of my time in the Paragon escaping the heat.
In the period before the rainy season Nearby countries that are agricultural countries often have forests burned. Or burn fields to prepare for planting, causing Thailand to be affected by dust pollution. We regret that we cannot resolve this issue directly.
Hey Greeny Was on Phu Quoc in January. Very cool and excellent place to unwind . Slower Island life for sure. Went fishing , took the tram and motor scooters all over . Definitely less expensive than Thailand . Did you see the light show and firework at the complex? Big show lasted awhile also . People are friendly and polite, English is 50/50 so keep google near by . I would go again ! Be well
I was thee in 2016, and it looks to me, like they are prepping the island for a lot more tourism. The problem when I was there, was there was just a few big hotels, and resorts, and I think they are trying to attract expats by building condos. When I was there, I saw what looked like gringo developers milling around, pointing etc.. So I think it's outsiders, and maybe the islanders are resisting. I was at this place when it was nothing there. just a barge driving in pillars.
One is a city and other is an island so not a fair comparison. Sunset is a well know place with little tourist but chill if you like the deserted area. Durong Dong is where the main crowd is. I like both countries as they are less than 2 hrs apart. Essentially its where you want to be based unless it's strictly vacation only.
Thanks for the info. Been to Bangkok many times. I have no desire to go bc of all the traffic and noise. I do like Vietnam. Although Saigon is nice, it is also congested.
@@GreenyTravels Don't. U won't like the traffic, noise and pollution. Saigon and Hanoi are approx 11-12 mil population each while Da Nang is about 1 mil. I'm in Saigon right now for about 2 more wks, then heading northwest to Da Nang.

Having lived both Thailand and Vietnam, one of the worst parts of Vietnam is NOISE. Once you live in big cities in Vietnam, the construction/ motorcycle noise will drive you nuts compared to Thailand. Definitely pollution is there in Saigon and Ha Noi.
Doesn't look like noise is an issue on this island though? Any other parts of Vietnam that are not noisy? What about da lat and vung tao? I can't stand noisy cities

@@GreenyTravels the country is nowhere near as developed as Thailand and the culture is to conservative. It’s a boring place. Trust me, I know from experience.
I toured Phu Quoc on a motorbike last week and now back in Michigan, USA. I stumbled on Sunset Town and was mesmerized. I spent hours there. It was unbelievable that we ran into a similar installed city at the north end of the island, "Grand World". These two places look like billion dollar investments.
My first time there I had that same experience. Stayed on Long Beach and cruised the whole island and ran into these place. Was shocked and amazed. Now this time I stayed in Sunset Town. Amazing value for the prices
Oh you actually stayed in Sunset Town. Nice! I should have looked into that for at least part of my time there. I loved the island and want to go back.

I remember when I first came to Thailand - 40 years ago - and checked into a 4 star hotel. In the morning I decided to get room service - and when the chap came I asked for 2 boiled eggs and toast. He looked at me ..'eh,' 'two boiled eggs?' 'Eh!' 'Yes, eggs'....'eh!' Exasperated, held two fingers up and flapped my elbows up and down to suggest 'chicken.' 'Oh....OK...' - he left, and I waited almost 2 hours, thinking 'how long does it take to boil an egg for God's sake?' Just as my fuse was down to an eighth of an inch there was a knock on the door - and the same beaming chap came in with two large saucepans. It turned out there was a boiled chicken in each....but...but...but...he'd forgotten the toast! 😭😭😭
@@thehumancanary131 I'm not criticising you. And funny story. Just saying for the benefit of others, because it's important to try to use the language as much as possible. Two things. What day did you make that video about the nice clear blue sky in Phu Quoc? I live in Central Pattaya with a great view of Koh Larn, and I had to take a picture and post on my Instagram about how clear the view was yesterday the 28th. Maybe there was some sort of atmospheric condition that cleared out the whole Bay of Thailand for a day or two 🤞 . If you see my second question and have time to answer? I’ve also seen your other video of Phu Quoc and visa requirements for Americans and we can do visa on entry without any prior applications. Before I watched your video tonight I actually looked on the Internet today about entry to Phu Quoc and it says you have to do the online request for entry paperwork, and on entry go to the visa on arrival window with all your paperwork and two passport photos, basically the same as going to mainland Vietnam. So I’m just wondering if I want to hop on a plane tomorrow to Phu Quoc, can I just go through immigration with my American passport and get visa on entry without any prior approvals and the hour plus line I had to do last time I went to Ho Chi Minh? Thanks for any replies 3:45
I've never been to Vietnam. Do they have "milder" weather compared to Thailand? I am guessing it's slightly better if you're on a beach or island with constant breeze and Phu Quoc has mountains as well? I grew up in Malaysia (now in US) and I'm not a fan of the weather. Love it when it rains but you pay the price of heat+humidity when the sun comes out.
@@GreenyTravels - I'll be looking forward to your next video. I think if you like less crowded places and it has supermarkets and a few restaurants to satisfy your needs, Phu Quoc would be perfect.
Hi. I enjoyed this video and need a vacation and I would like to visit this island. I've visited Vietnam back in 2013, and would like to enjoy the relaxing environment on this island. Would you please let me know the location? Thank you very much in advance.
Interesting development in Vietnam. I have visited Saigon and Nha Trang. Good internet even out in the boonies. Few spoke English but those who did, spoke it well.
Just looked up visa on arrival for US citizens!! Only on emergency basis it says. Must apply prior to landing in Vietnam. Not sure what the requirements are
Air quality is a big must for me due to allergies. I find that I'm able to breathe a whole lot better in areas near the ocean. Unfortunately, Thailand now has many areas that are affected by the air pollution due to agriculture burning during the first quarter of the year. Due to the late arrival of the rainy season, it appears to be lasting even longer this year. Because of this, I'm looking for potential housing areas in the southern provinces of Thailand that aren't in the touristy areas like Phuket. So far, I like the Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phang Nga, and Krabi provinces. There are so many beach areas that aren't populated by tourist to explore.
Bangkok is cool, great people. Just very busy. Was there for a year. Retired like it more quiet so moved to Loei, love it here. Been here for 2 years now. More my speed. Have many friends that love it there. Its just a matter of who you are and what you like.
Where you are now is a Chinese empty mega city. It is like a Hollywood film set. I was in Bangkok in April after 6 years away. It was so expensive if not more so than the UK or Europe. The Vietnamese don't like the Thais - they were complicit with the US back in the war. They also don't like the Chinese but will take their money.
I think its hard to find right balance as many countries have bad medical emergency options. My friend was in big city in Vietnam last year and could not get medical help.I love travel but unsure of best option I suppose even if you have a fixed place to access cheap flights and medical and if possible spend remaining time one month at a time exploring new places
Thank You Greeny, please tell us more about Phu Quoc. Re:Pricing for real estate, rent vs buying, also other cost of living items would be greatly appreciated. Great video Greeny!
I've been to Thailand 5 times and I am happy to arrive at BKK...and then happy to escape Bangkok. I love Bangkok but the density of people, traffic, smog is unattractive. (I'm just lucky my GF lives in the North East.) IF and WHEN Thailand goes electric transportation, Bangkok will really benefit.
I was 3 days in Bangkok in april of this years and yes it was hard to bread but after I move in Phuket Patong the air is way better and I decide to come back in Patong in few week to stay there for 1 years because I apply for retired visa
Very nice! I would be very interested in living quarters prices. Restaurants and markets, stores in the area. Beach looked perfect. Sand fleas? Looks like a great place for a beer and a swim. Maybe some fishing 🎣. Thanks for the tour. I’m with you on the pollution thing. Not interested in that at all.
I love Bangkok. The air pollution doesn't bother me but I must admit I only stay there 2 weeks or so sometimes I stay a month. Living there might be different. Vietnam is slow and not as much social. It's beauty is amazing and the prices are probably one of the cheapest in Asia combined with the high quality scenery. Tough choice.
Spent 2 weeks in Phú Quoc, boring ghost town. Sunset Town was built pre Covid, the developers went bust and Chinese won’t buy there Rather go to Da Nang
Nice video. Thanks. That city looks nice, but I'm not interested in a planned city for foreigners. It will become another Phuket. Phuket is not a planned city, but there's so many foreigners that you lose the native culture. The Vietnam planned city has a feel of going to a Caribbean country and only staying in an all-inclusive resort. That's nice, but it's not the experience I'm looking for.
There's no pollution there because it seems that near nobody lives there.

More videos coming from there. Great questions. I’m gonna screen shot this so I can cover it. Thank you!!
Exactly the questions I want to know. From the video, it looks sorta boring, no?
I have a friend who travels extensively and your island is one of her favorites.
I may head south at some point. Maybe Samui more than likely.
Thailand my # 1 too
Where are the people? It’s creepy abandoned.
Wow! It looks like the best of Europe! Do you have cost of living details?
Cheap that all I can say is very affordable leases now since so overbuild. Got into the real Viet city. Coffee, beer restaurants all very cheap. Great bang for the buck there. Hopefully soon they will have a real retirement visa
Will soon retire but do people get bored of beaches and solitude? I think I would. Probably better some city life for me.
One hour per annum on a beach is enough for me. Like pulling toe nails.... And I live a stone drop away from the ocean.
I like looking at the ocean from my balcony. Don’t swim there too often
Great video such a beautiful place you brought up some interesting things which I will take into consideration when I go on holiday to Vietnam later this year many thanks looking forward to seeing more of your video's
Thanks. I’ll have a few more from there
Looks amazing! Wonder how long it’s going to take for the crowds to discover it. But I agree, we are constantly Chocking our lungs out here in many parts of Thailand. Pattaya is out of control now, with horrific traffic and crowds. Heading out to Cyprus for 6-8 months this week

Wow, first time I was at Phu quoc there was just jungle where you are walking! That was 10 years ago.
Large parts of the island still line that.
Thailand really does need to fix the pollution issue even though neighboring countries do contribute to it as well.
Yes. Will be a tough fix. Seems to get worse every year instead of better
They won't though!

Bangkok the coolest city ever. Pollution a bummer though. When it clears out I will take more trips there. Just not live there

It seems like it’s gearing up to be a major retirement destination. I think the big guns building there will push to make it happen
"...only walking for a few hours,..." Really? With all that concrete around you, like being inside an oven. That's why so many Thais like hanging around the shopping malls - somewhere cool.
I want to go there too. How much was the plane flight and scooter rental. Did you eat any meals in some of the old towns?
Yes. Food great in the real city. Paid about $180 RT from BKK. Motorbike $5 a day
Curious about the air quality in hua hin. Going to take a trip there in a few weeks.
Not sure. I use the app Air Visual

Soon to come we hear. Hopefully. Phu Quoc
I went to Bangkok last week on a visa run (I'm spending the next few months in Da Nang), it felt so hot, despite being a similar temperature to Da Nanf, there was no air circulation making it really difficult to breathe; spent most of my time in the Paragon escaping the heat.
Two word,,,,the mall. Gotta stay cool
What kind of visa do you have?
In the period before the rainy season Nearby countries that are agricultural countries often have forests burned. Or burn fields to prepare for planting, causing Thailand to be affected by dust pollution. We regret that we cannot resolve this issue directly.
Will be a hard fix!!
Hey Greeny
Was on Phu Quoc in January.
Be well
Yep. Still fireworks every night. Definitely a slow pace
Why does it look like a ghost town?
I was thee in 2016, and it looks to me, like they are prepping the island for a lot more tourism. The problem when I was there, was there was just a few big hotels, and resorts, and I think they are trying to attract expats by building condos. When I was there, I saw what looked like gringo developers milling around, pointing etc.. So I think it's outsiders, and maybe the islanders are resisting. I was at this place when it was nothing there. just a barge driving in pillars.
Yep. Way over building. The people will probably come eventually.
Locals can’t afford it. Tourists not there yet.
I'll have to check it out when I get there Greeny! Stay cool 😎 my friend.
Does Pattaya have the smog problem?
Not like Chiang Mai but not great
One is a city and other is an island so not a fair comparison. Sunset is a well know place with little tourist but chill if you like the deserted area. Durong Dong is where the main crowd is. I like both countries as they are less than 2 hrs apart. Essentially its where you want to be based unless it's strictly vacation only.
Oh. No comparison. Just decided to leave one for the other.
Thanks for the info. Been to Bangkok many times. I have no desire to go bc of all the traffic and noise. I do like Vietnam. Although Saigon is nice, it is also congested.
Still havent been to Saigon
Traffic in Vietnam no noise?😳😳😳
@@GreenyTravels Don't. U won't like the traffic, noise and pollution. Saigon and Hanoi are approx 11-12 mil population each while Da Nang is about 1 mil. I'm in Saigon right now for about 2 more wks, then heading northwest to Da Nang.
I'm in Bangkok and I'm not sipping on Weak sauce like you doing this video in Colorado United States the pollution is bad there I would get migraine headaches. I have an experience that in Thailand. I don't see People smoking fentanyl on the streets either.
How can you live there if you can only stay 45 days?
They take a boat to Cambodia for 2 days then come back.
How hard is to get a Long term visa over there in Vietnam?
Doesn't really exist
So where is home now Thailand or Vietnam and how about visa is it the same as Thailand or much easier.
I think Thailand is easier. I still base out of Na Jomtien
INDONESIA has the easiest visa...They have a 2 year tourist/business/foreign investment visa. They also have a retirement visa. Google Bali Visas DOT com
Having lived both Thailand and Vietnam, one of the worst parts of Vietnam is NOISE. Once you live in big cities in Vietnam, the construction/ motorcycle noise will drive you nuts compared to Thailand. Definitely pollution is there in Saigon and Ha Noi.
And those damn horns
Doesn't look like noise is an issue on this island though?
Any other parts of Vietnam that are not noisy? What about da lat and vung tao?
I can't stand noisy cities
Came back from phu quoc,6 weeks ago..kehm beach is amazing, sunset town is fantastic especially at night. Loved exploring the island on the moped...food is delicious and is sooooo cheap..beers on the beach for 60p uk...highly recommended.would retire there but property is really really expensive😮

Yep. Good time to avoid
I toured Phu Quoc on a motorbike last week and now back in Michigan, USA. I stumbled on Sunset Town and was mesmerized. I spent hours there.

Two things. What day did you make that video about the nice clear blue sky in Phu Quoc? I live in Central Pattaya with a great view of Koh Larn, and I had to take a picture and post on my Instagram about how clear the view was yesterday the 28th. Maybe there was some sort of atmospheric condition that cleared out the whole Bay of Thailand for a day or two 🤞
.
NO visa need for 30 days on the island
I've never been to Vietnam. Do they have "milder" weather compared to Thailand? I am guessing it's slightly better if you're on a beach or island with constant breeze and Phu Quoc has mountains as well? I grew up in Malaysia (now in US) and I'm not a fan of the weather. Love it when it rains but you pay the price of heat+humidity when the sun comes out.
Yea. Breeze helped. Don’t get me wrong though. Was still very hot.
@@GreenyTravels - I'll be looking forward to your next video. I think if you like less crowded places and it has supermarkets and a few restaurants to satisfy your needs, Phu Quoc would be perfect.

There are populated Vietnam cities. Tourism could boom more though. Good for us now

Not for Phu Quoc. Only on mainland.

Oh I love this island. I will have to visit there one day. Not overcrowded like most islands. The beach was great too.
No crowds
My feeling as well. I may look for a 3 month rental down south next buring season
Looks really cool! I'd go there for sure!
Was a fun week
Bangkok is cool, great people. Just very busy. Was there for a year. Retired like it more quiet so moved to Loei, love it here. Been here for 2 years now. More my speed. Have many friends that love it there. Its just a matter of who you are and what you like.
I have been in Da Nang for almost four months now, I absolutely love it here. Vietnam on the whole is definitely cheaper than Thailand too.
I’m due another trip to Danang
Where you are now is a Chinese empty mega city. It is like a Hollywood film set.
I was in Bangkok in April after 6 years away. It was so expensive if not more so than the UK or Europe.
The Vietnamese don't like the Thais - they were complicit with the US back in the war. They also don't like the Chinese but
will take their money.
I’d be curious if Thailand’s change in tax law has affected you or have you found a work around?
No. Doesn’t affect me.

Nice video. Thanks. That city looks nice, but I'm not interested in a planned city for foreigners. It will become another Phuket.
