Im japanese- american, and 50 yrs old now some of my oldest memories are my mom singing this to me when she would give me a bath as a very young child. Shes now 82 and sings it just as beautifully as i remember, but when she does pass away, i hope i never hear a note of this song as i fear i wouldnt be able to stop crying Would have to look up as i walk for the remainder of my life, coincedentally enough my moms maiden name is also Sakamoto, but no relation she says

The song was renamed after a Japanese stew by a British man, which is pretty disrespectful of both the song, language, and culture. I think the song is called "Oe i muite arukou" now.

Play the original with translations. This was a massive international hit in 1963..right before Beatlemania. But the strings on the original are epic.
