Yea drew, the hats in the 1700s and 1800s where just fabric. But at that point it was just impractical to wear metal on your head and the only reason they changed in ww1 was because of the shrapnel
Little history lesson on the first comic. First off the reason they wore metal Armour and helmets was because it would allow the wearer some protection against swords, axes, bows, crossbows ect, ect. The reason that all fell out of use is because of the rise of guns like the musket and flintlock as they had enough fire power to punch through metal Armour making it useless, and so you might as well die with fashion. The reason helmets came back during World war 1 and two was mostly to protect the wearer from debris and shrapnel from stuff like grenades or if something was destroyed and debris was flying everywhere they might have a chance to live. And for the last panel there's not much to say other then that's also the main use of helmets nowadays and that they could save your life from lower caliber bullets but that's it. Tell me in the reply's if I got anything wrong.
The arms race between armor lead to metal armor being a thing during bows and sword era but during muskets, it didn’t matter how much armor you put on you’re probably going to die so quicker faster infantry was favorable with just cloth fabric to distinguish from pho.
yea as muskets became more advanced, plate armor was completely useless. this led to armor being replaced with uniforms to stand out more, be more professional, etc.
Armor became less reliable, but it still could save your life. Heavy cavalry (cuirassiers) still wore breastplates to protect themselves from small arms fire. Try providing hundreds of thousands to over a million men (that would also have to march in that armor on top of the rest of their equipment) with armor when it all had to still be handmade, though.
Distinguishing friend from pho was a major concern in the Tonkin campaign. As a result, 3,000 Black Flag soldiers were accidentally cannibalised by the Vietnamese army.
Not really. Manufacturing helmets in pre industrial era that could be reliable and cheap to mass produce was impossible. It wasnt impossible to create a reliable helmet, it was just really expensive and the ones that could afford it didn't really need it in the back kilometers behind the frontlines. Funny shaped hats and feathers and everything served to change the outline of your head to the sharpshooters on the enemy side so they cannot properly determine where the hat ends and your head begins or how tall are you so they would shoot you in the torso to not risk trying for headshots and missing. And if you were against volley fire as line infantry its was irrelevant how much armor you have.
So I looked a bit into tricorn hats and the functional purpose I found was that it caused rain to drip off on the two back corners, while keeping the front comparatively dry, which may or may not have helped with reloading and aiming muskets.
0:34 the reason why back then they never wore armor to protect from Muskets was because there was really no point since the ball would just pierce through it.
@@a_Playerwastaken Not ban, (he's one of the oldest member of the subr, banning him would just cause chaos) they just prohibit him from doing his stretch ball panel thing.
1:25 Irl, the brazilian flag says something like “Order and progress” but these flags say “Brazil under everything” the literal opposite of what our past president said and the second one says “Lol” but in brazillian laugh
As an Australian, the whole entire "I am 20% Irish!" and other stuff like that is still prevalent here, it's probably because we're trying to cling on to history and a land that's our own, it's probably also that we're so diverse and everyone has a different background and identity. When the only culture that you have that's truly your own is so recent and is shared among everyone, you start to feel like you have no history or identity apart from your ancestors being sent on ships or migrating here. People want to be different so badly, people want a group they can identify with that's more specific to them and their land. I imagine people from different backgrounds in European countries will try to keep a connection to something that feels like it's their ancestral land too.
8:00 As a Canadian, I’ll say this. A lot of us that are first or second generation Canadian identify with our cultural and ethnic backgrounds, especially if both our parents are from a specific country, but that happens less and less when it gets more and more diluted. Like how in the US people who are Italian American might only have one grandparent that is full Italian and still identify as Italian, but here in Canada it’s less and less likely that you’ll still identify as such.
Here is a fun story. Tito(Yugoslav ruler) went to America to visit the president of the USA. The president of the USA was very respected, whenever someone would have went on coffie with him, they would come 1h earlier then him. But Tito decided to make Chad Yugoslavia's colony. He proceeded to come 15 minutes late, and then he smoked a ciggar. Someone make this into a countryballs comic.
There is less difference from Slovenia to Macedonia than there is from Milan to Calabria or from Hamburg to Bavaria. It's just Italy and Germany got a bigger headstart in their Nation Building, that's all!
8:42 Well you are wrong. Belgorod never wanted independence. This comic refers to the fact that In Ukraine there are some Russians who fight against Russia in "Russian volunteer corps" and they recently attacked Belgorod multiple times. This is why there is a White-Blue-White flag as this part of "Ukrainian army" sometimes uses it as their symbol
