    Even though it’s getting pretty cold now, we still have a patch of bright yellow marigolds… I’m going to harvest some today and try using g them for dye. 🙂 Thanks!

    I love watching the Paradise fiber unboxing. I think your amazement and enthusiasm for every months offerings add to the pleasure of imagining using one of these unique offerings! I haven’t ever spun merino, and this months braid will spin up into a beautiful yarn. I’ve never been a sticker person but my kids love them: evidence is all over my house! I’m wondering if the buttons could be used as decorations for the hat pattern? I think a fractal spin would be nice. Do you think the color length will be large enough to separate them, or will you have to group them? I always wonder how dyers have placed the fiber in the pan before color is applied! I thank you for sharing this months Paradise fiber box!

      Hi Pamy! Looks like you wrote your comment on the wrong channel, but this Paradise fiber box sounds amazing 😊 I'm guessing you are a fiber artist, so hopefully, you also enjoy the natural dye videos here on Color Quest 🌼

    Hello Margaret, could you please tell me what plant materuial or dye extract can I source to obtain a lime greenish yellow color? I tried marigold with alum acetate and got a beautiful bright yellow. I soaked this sample in dye bath for like 20 min and the other one for like 40 min. the latter was a beautiful orangish-mustard. Both amazing shades however, i am looking for a lime green yellowish

      Great question! Green is tough to find in the natural dye pot, so over-dyeing is often the best way to get there. I have a video about making green dye from Apr/May 2023 where I got some more lime green colors using ajozome indigo (which is water soluble and available in a bottle) and weld. Check those out if you can 💚

      I have never made soap, but there are many natural colors that are used. You should give it a try!

    Flower dyed fabric is fugitive or not

    • @MargaretByrdColorQuest
      @MargaretByrdColorQuest  2 года назад

      Marigold flowers are a common and popular dye source, but with any natural color, you will want to make sure you pre-treat your fibers with a mordant to help with the bond between textile and dye. Remember that natural color lives and breaths and changes with time. That is what makes it so wonderfully unique!

    I know.
    This is a really old video.But when doing this should you remove the green parts on the bottom of the flower

      Never too old for me 😉 You can certainly remove the green to keep it from adding it's own hue to the dye.

    How to make natural color for hand painting purpose on fabric ?

    • @MargaretByrdColorQuest
      @MargaretByrdColorQuest  2 года назад +2

      In order turn natural dyes into 'paint' for textile, you can make a printing paste by using a thickener like guar gum, gum arabic, gum tragacanth or a mixture of other plant gums like sodium alginate. You can find these types of thickeners on line from shops focused on natural dyes like Botanical Colors & Maiwa or from a local shop in your area.

    I'm so addicted to your videos. And I really want to try eco dying. Can you please help me with my queries 🥺. I want to dye cotton and silk fabric. So can you tell me after using alum as a mordant and if I dye my cloth with termeric, marigold and roses should I use a color fixative and how can I use a color fixative to preserve my color for long and is there any particular washing routine for eco dyed clothes that the color last for long. Please please reply.

    • @MargaretByrdColorQuest
      @MargaretByrdColorQuest  3 года назад +3

      Hi Devika - so happy you are here! If you are just starting, using protein fibers like silk are often easier to dye to get a good result. Cellulose fibers like cotton can be more difficult to dye and/or have lighter results. A mordant like alum is the step you want to take to help bond the dye color to your textile. I don't have a suggestion for a 'fixative', but a mordant helps with keeping the color longer. Turmeric is known to fade more quickly and rose dye will typically change color over time, but if you are careful with how you treat your fabrics, these dyes are beautiful options. Always wash your textile in pH neutral soap, preferably by hand or with a cold gentle cycle you would use for delicates. Air dry out of the sun to help keep the colors longer as well. Remember - natural colors are living and breathing - they are meant to change with time 💕
