  • Early morning of Thursday 1-7-16 The Berlin Township Volunteer firefighter Station 1 and 2 Was toned out fire a Structure fire in the 6900 Block of Chester St with a cross of South Huron River Drive. Dispatch said the Family of three were exiting the home and that smoke and flames were visible. I live about 15 miles from the fire and my father and I, hopped on the Freeway (I-75). Due to the the shortage of fire men during the Day and the report from a Berlin deputy on scene saying that it was fully involved, Berlin fire Chief called for Rockwood and Eastal beach fire Departments. it took us about 10min to get to the scene and we followed the 2nd engine into the fire.
    I spoke with the Homeowner and she said that smoke was coming through the heat vents and cracks of the walls. The fire was mostly fought from the out side because the floor had fell in, in the middle of the structure.
    NO INJURIES WERE REPORTED!

Even if an entire room has its floor burnt out you just simply avoid the room.This is a clear as day attic fire that needed to be fought from underneath and have ceilings pulled. Victoria Wilson: I am going to explain fire ground protocols for you. 1 the senior officer is usually the guy who is Incident Command. All other personnel govern their actions in accordance with the orders of the IC. That means that everyone parks their asses until they receive orders from incident command if they have not already been given their assignments. When I was a recruit Firefighter I was put on traffic control until I learned enough to actually work fire suppression. Our safety/training officer consistently talked about fire fighter safety and the importance of having a coordinated attack plan to reduce the risks and always cautioned against independent action.

    • @riseagan
      @riseagan 4 года назад +1

      I'd disagree. This is a vent limited fire. Ventilating this fire would create flow paths that would pull oxygen in and give the fire what it's starving for. Of course you can't tell from the video if you can or not, but in single story attic fires, I'd pull the soffits and flow water right into the attic space. Once you've applied enough water to transition to a fuel limited fire, then maybe open the roof up for some ventilation.

    • @williamclark5339
      @williamclark5339 4 года назад +2

      The group at the door should have entered and ripped down the ceiling to expose the fire. Also a hole cut in the roof would have drawn up the heat and smoke to they could attack it from inside. They had all the water they needed. As a firefighter myself we had a fire similar and we did cut a hole in the roof entered ripped down the ceiling and save the house with limited water, we are a tanker town 6,000 on site at the time with another 9,000 on it's way from other towns . They stand in the doorway with the nozzle on tight jet and most of the water they use will just bounce of the ceiling and is not absorbed.
      If you stand in the doorway widen the nozzle a bit , so you have a larger surface area of water which gets absorbed more effectively which in turn will reduce the heat and cool the flammable gases that have not ignited.
      The seat of the fire looks to be at the side which if they had spent a bit of time hitting with a slightly wider cone from that side would have had a greater impact on knocking back the fire to start with.

    I don't like arm-charming other department's strategies and tactics from looking at a youtube video, but have to say there's nothing tactics wise done correctly on this structure fire. Recognizing it as a well involved attic fire once lines were ready top side ventilation should have occurred. Please don't try to justify the safety factor when the gabled cut the firefighters made was a whole let less safe and most of all least effective for structural relief of super heated gases. Also, firefighters need to have breathing apparatus donned and in use or mask can be donned quickly if needed for rescue and protection of self! I think the FC needs more experience and/or training in fire ground command. I know this is 5 years old, but firefighters are still using these videos for entertainment or training purposes. From my years of nail-bending, I can tell you the fact that the siding goes almost down to grade is a pretty-good indication that it's not a basement, but there's no sure way to tell if it's a crawlspace or slab. Odds are slab with siding that low as the sill-plate gets attached directly to the slab so the siding extends close to grade, but depending on where they stopped with the foundation wall or where they piled the dirt, but I can tell you first hand slab-construction isn't that common in that neck of the woods, and it theoretically could be ANYTHING. I've seen enough strange variations to never guess without a close look.

(i.e. The handline must be advanced into the structure by entering through the front door and continuing on throughout the building until you have extinguished the fire) The way you guys are reacting to actually advancing the line into the house, it looks like you are really "Smoke Shy and Fire Scared" which is not the way firefighters are suppose to react. Maybe you should learn a bit more about building construction and reading smoke. That was a VERY dangerous fire, with ZERO life hazard. Risk little to save little, risk a lot to save a lot. There was a VERY high chance of ceiling collapse or backdraft. No way in hell I would send anyone interior for that. They may not be the best FD out there, but they were smart enough to not over commit themselves on a fire with nothing to save.

    • @tewksburydriver8624
      @tewksburydriver8624 3 года назад

      @@ffjsb ... actually early in the fire the smoke was not a backdraft risk, it was lazy brownish smoke, not turbulent black smoke. Black smoke indicates a high probability of backdraft since its in the decay stage and oxygen deprived. This was not backdraft smoke and visibility was actually really good with a high neutral plane at the front door. There was adequate manpower to attempt an interior attack and try to find an opening. Had the neutral plane been low, had the smoke been pressurized and black or at least darker, then the risk may be too high. You need to learn about size up and smoke.

      @@tewksburydriver8624 Evidently you missed the part about the floor having collapsed. Not to mention that there was heavy smoke from the entirety of the eaves. Lots of times you can have backdraft potential with not that much smoke because there's not enough ventilation for smoke to come out in large amounts. And black smoke indicates more hydrocarbons, thick brown smoke is from incomplete ignition of class A materials.
      I only know about this because of nearly 40 years in the fire service and a fire science major...

I have a Bachelors in fire science and a Bachelors in a fire administration and Emergency management along with 22 years of full time experience in a busy department. I don’t like to spout my resume but if you think an interior attack based on the visual cues was not possible then it’s a good thing you are a key board commander. Not being critical but can someone explain to me why the front door was left open and no entry? Once the front door was opened, flow path was created. I understand transition, but no water made it to the seat of fire. Water should have been flowed in middle window Bravo side under the fast moving smoke. If your guys are able to stand at front door then there isn't any heat in that area. In my professional opinion 1. Vertical ventilation would have kept fire localized. 2. Make an aggressive attack and control door. 3. Cutting hole in front of house only created a upper horizontal flow path. Looks aggressive but not effective. • @richardolsen2798
      @richardolsen2798 6 лет назад +1

      It was a total loss when they got there. The occupants were hoarders, and the contents fuel load made any kind of interior attack too dangerous as the floor had partially burned away pre arrival. Some places, the windows were blocked by contents. People need to realize that some fires occur where conditions make any effective attempt at suppression too hazardous using the equipment and extinguishing agent available.

      The whole concept applies to doing an initial strike on a fire that's already vented on its own to reduce the volatility of the environment inside for crews to enter- and it irrefutably works at accomplishing that. It isn't enough to put the fire out, never has been and nobody ever said it would be. Ever.
      Unfortunately in this case a combination of inadequate exterior application of water where it was going to help in tandem with hesitation in entering to do proper extinguishment while the fire was small and oxygen deprived resulted in what we ended up seeing.
