Loving all of these videos Femke! I'm currently making 75k USD at a job that I really really dislike. I was considering going to grad school for the field I am in now but I have always been interested in design and more creative fields. I have been working on a UX/UI portfolio for quite some time now and am finally going to start applying to creative jobs. I am worried that I will have to take a pay cut in the new field, but I know that even a 50% pay cut would make me happier in the long run if I work at something that I enjoy. It is refreshing to see that you came from a business background and that your pay has been quite diverse. Thank you!

Thanks for sharing!! I really appreciate when designers can be fully transparent about their salary history. As a Product Designer, I was able to increase my salary by $20K MORE just within 2 years!! 😁 And I haven't been doing product design for that long. I was still in my early entry-level stages. My ultimate goal was to land a role as a Product Designer on a team working on big digital projects and I've been in my role for only 1 week so far but definitely looking to continue gaining more experience under my belt. But this is REALLY insightful and you're helping MANY designers...😉

it's called supply and demand. it has nothing to do with how much YOU think you are worth, it has everything to do with how much the company/society thinks you are worth. If you think you are more valuable, quit the job and find another or prove to them your worth, don't expect handouts in life. No one is going to just give you money just cuz

Not every designer is worth as much as they think either. So it goes both ways. Maybe 1 out of 200 applications I get is from somebody I would actually consider to invite for an interview. So you can imagine how many entitled designers walk around thinking they are worth top level salaries when they actually aren't even going to set their foot in the door. Let alone roll in money.

Since I'm in the US I was mostly looking at the US dollars so, in that sense, you took a $20k pay decrease when transferring to Canada. I know this all has to do with the cost of living so I'm curious to know how that compares when you moved from Europe to Canada, do you feel your living expenses are more, less, or about the same? Maybe there are other benefits as well. Overall, do you prefer working in Europe or Canada?

There is an opportunity here to talk about more negotiation skills. Salary is just one part of your benefit package. Vacation, health care, equipment, learning/training, etc should all be considered. Make a list of the things you want based on the work/life balance you are striving for. As Femke said, don't show your hand until the employer shows theirs. Once you have an offer.... ALWAYS COUNTER! Take your list and either try to bump up some aspects of the offer or add in items from your list. Look, the employer offered you a package... you ARE the candidate they want to hire... countering an offer is not going to lose you the job unless you reach too far and over-value your benefits (e.g. 6 weeks of vacation for an intermediate, 25% more salary than what is offered). If you don't over value your counter the worse that is going to happen is that they say no to some items. The best that can happen is they say yes to everything. If you have weak negotiation skills then you need to read up and get educated... it can make a huge difference to not only your financial well being but your mental well being too!

Thanks a lot for making this, it's very helpful! One note: at the beginning of the video, you say you saw a 92% increase over the last 5 years. Your net salary increase has actually been substantially larger (~139%) if you compare your current salary (78,248.15 USD) with the first figure you gave (32,784.50 USD). It's closer to 99% growth if you start from the 20% raise you got after your first few months (39,352.78 USD).

I think the numbers we less interesting than how you confidently negotiated and also got extra benifits of moving country as these tend to help with visa and getting settled.
From my experience you can quickly grow early in your carrier in salary as you prove yourself but have to be willing to move. The bigger companies have the structure to offer raises and promotion but you might find happier learning in small teams. When you get to mid level after 5-10 year you can find your salary doesn’t change so much as you are at market rate. You then need to think if you want promotion or could add extra skills to push higher (or again change job)

Wow! You should move to the US. I used to recruit for big tech and would definitely consider you a senior product designer. Salaries there were about 160k base + ~40k in stock. I left the US and am still baffled that Americans can make so much. even as a recruiter I was on $116k + some stock. crazy! I'm not saying this to brag, I'm in UX design now in the UK and now make £38k GBP. Such a huge cut but definitely worth it in the long run

Thanks for this video Femke! It's really useful 😊Next month I'm starting in a new company and I did tell them my current salary, but I got them to offer me a little over that. I definitely should have watched this before haha I would've asked what they would offer without letting them know my current salary... I guess I can always renegotiate when I get a performance review 😊

I'm on at a Senior/Director level in the UX field and I calculated and it comes to 190.192,88 USD (in Belgium) Pre-tax. I'm have 14 years of experience in the field right now. More people should talk about this! Thanks.
This does not include Company car, health insurance, bonuses, invalidity insurance, pension insurance, VISA expense account.

Great tips!! It’s always good when a company offers you a fair transferred wage when moving countries, I was lucky to have that when moving to Melbourne. Unfortunately I did experience some hiccups with not pushing enough to negotiate on salaries when taking new jobs causing me to fall back 13k in a year and having only recently got back to my final salary from 3 jobs ago. Eek! Not that money is everything but as women we definitely undervalue ourselves too much.

~12.000-20.000 USD (gross) / year here, in Hungary. And this is a little bit above than the average salaries here.

In my country (India), a UX Designer earns $333 a month. Oh, and the 'UX' Designer also needs to do UI Design, Graphics Design and sometimes the programming too because it's all the same to the company.

As an Indian final year engineering student trying to break into this industry , this is a fact :(
In India they don't even hire Non design students until and unless you are from a tier 1 engineering institute which makes no sense . Startups want people to work for free. I am reconsidering this path and may divert to Business Analytics .

    Hey Femke, thanks for sharing!
I'm in my first UI/UX designer job (straight otta uni) but am handling most of the design work. I'm wondering when's the best time to bump up the salary? I've been here for almost 10 months now, should it be after a big project or a certain time frame? (complete year etc) I'd say that I started with an okay salary, higher than average grads and i've been stuck to that till now.

    • @belstain

I would say, as with almost any job, time on the job is less important than performance. So if you've made improvements in performance and/or taken on more responsibility then it may be a good time to ask for more money. It's all about how much value you can bring to the company. Ideally you will constantly be learning and improving, and consequently earning more for both yourself and the company you work for.
For the first months fresh out of school, most people are not actually creating enough value to pay their salary, but typically there is a lot of improvement in skill and performance in that first year. So if you're looking for a raise above your first starting salary I'd look at how much you've improved not from the beginning, but from the period a few months in where you were really getting the hang of the job. If you've grown a bunch after getting comfortable with the work, then it's probably time for a raise.
