Beautifully economic way to hold the wood. I was going to say simple, but functionally, its just as sophisticated as a shave horse where it matters.
That would make a Hell of a Fire Board for a Bow drill.........Just Sayin'

Dave you just made my day big time! Because of the very limited space where i live and my financial situation. A regular shavehorse is not an option, and I have really been wondering and looking for a solution to hold my piece of wood so i can work it with my draw knife. This is perfect! It May seem like a small or insignificant Thing to some people, but I REALLY enjoy Carving. And This is something i have really Been needing, so you sharing This video brings me great Joy and some peace of mind, so atruly heart felt thank you!

Dave, I'm a city boy, but a city boy who carves. I'm not too modest to say I'm handy with a draw knife and that pocket draw knife is outstanding. Size, shape, and it's 1095 steel. Pushing 70 years, I haven't got the time or strength to learn how to make one (wife's oven is off limits), so I just have to be envious. 1095 steel! Not everyone knows about it. I have my uncle's WWII Navy Cattaraugus that he wore (let's say it was for sharks) and it is great.
Your rebar vise is good for relatively stationary wood, but I'll look again at your rope and log shaving setup, because the work I have to do requires constant adjustments. (3 foot dry hardwood walking cane shafts) I have the log lengths, all I have to do is secretly roll them into the basement.
I'm subscribing to your channel; most of the other "Bushcraft" channels are same old, same old. I made fire with sticks about 57 years ago.

I can see that being extremely helpful in some survival situations. A survival situation can arise from breaking a gunstock at the wrong time, and a drawknife makes carving a new gunstock a heck of a lot faster and easier. The vise is a good idea, too. I've used a downed tree by cutting out a section a bit longer than the length of the piece I needed to shave, and using a wedge to keep it in place, and make getting it in and out of the cut, and turning it, easier. It's a good trick, if you have nothing better at hand, but your wedge system would certainly involve a lot less work, and be more effective. Edit to add it may be my computer, or this blasted Edge browser, but after about the three minute mark on this video, I can't hear a thing.

great video, but you can use the draw knife to make really thin curls for fire starting, these could be even better than using your knife due to the larger sizes you can make and they can be worked to provide more surface area for your birds nest.

Never heard of rebar staples, but good idea. For the points, do you go with round points or chisel points?
I have a couple of straight drawknives that need sharpening. Not one of my better skills. I have some dry or semi dry maple. Is it possible to be able to practice carving on them in some way if I can just properly sharpen my straight drawknives and carving tools somehow?
Dave I hope you don't mind but I'm gonna nick that idea/design to make myself a similar draw knife for my Bergen, I am impressed with that and a nice little Sycamore behind you, ideal for carving eating utensils as the wood is light and contains no toxins, great channel mate keep up the good work, regards from ol Blighty, atb, Paul.

Great video brother! My question is can you tell when using an old file or something of that nature if it 1095 or 1075 steel. is there a tell tail sign or way of testing to see if the steel is any good for tools suck as these?

I apologize up front for the AQing (armchair quarterbacking) that I'm about to do. It is not intended as criticism. My dad gave me "The Art of Blacksmithing" and I've read it, and would like to get into blacksmithing, but haven't had the chance yet (you see - AQ). It said that for a more even quenching on knife blades, they should go into the quenching medium horizontally, so the blade edge hits the medium at the same time, and any variation goes across the blade instead of along it. Just my 1¢.

I've noticed in a couple of your recent videos that you've been using pigskin leather for some things, instead of cow hide leather. Is there a particular reason for this? Cost? Where do you even get pigskin?

That is one sharp draw knife
bought the draw knife for my dad and it came absolutely filthy. My hands were literally black after unpacking it. I like the knife but the shape it arrived in was terrible.
These are hand made and Oiled at the shop, they are very reasonably priced for hand made items and more cleaning and using clean oil before packing costs more money in process and adds cost to the knife, I think most folks would rather wipe a bit of dirty oil off than to receive a rusty blade or pay 10.00 more? Sorry for your experience brother and I will speak to my guys about it just the same-
