Shabdam means words of praise, it is a piece in which the deity is praised for His/Her benevolence and power. This item introduces the dancer to elementary natya (story-telling). Short lines of poetry alternate with small nrtta sequences. This Shabdam is in praise of Goddess Parvathi.
Devi as the primordial energy rose from the divine yagna performed by the Devas, as they prayed to her to redeem them from the atrocity of the evil asuras. The Shabdam talks about the birth of Lord Muruga and how Devi with her divine powers joined the six infants created by the kartikai kannikais to form Muruga whose six faces represent intellect, determination, power, justice, glory and prosperity. Devi gave him the “vel” to be his weapon as he became the commander of the army of the Devas.
