Great video young man.. Very helpful.. Is there a different meter Logic have that does what DRMeter does? I like this concept bro.. Outstanding video..

Absolutely! You can use the "Level Meter" in the metering section in Logic plugins. Just make sure to change the measurement to "RMS" instead of "Peak".

Great video as usual! Do you know any free alternatives to MAAT DRMeter? I Found TT DR-Meter but it doesnt have the target output function.

I was wondering the same thing.. I looked it up and its 129 bucks.. lol Logic has a meter like this but I don't know if it's like this one..

You can use the "Level Meter" in the metering section in Logic plugins. Just make sure to change the measurement to "RMS" instead of "Peak". Any RMS meter should work with this. I just prefer the MAAT meter - even though it's stupid expensive, but I wouldn't recommend it unless you're doing this for a living - you just can't justify it.

Hey brotha thanks for taking the time to help us better our vocal mixing skills. I sincerely appreciate it! I have some questions if you don't mind.
    1) I see you in one of your replies that you no longer use the Maat Meter. However, if i can afford it, do you still recommend it? I mean i have meters like span and youlean but youlean doesn't show rms anywhere i think. Span shows average rms but the Maat Meter seems more easy to use and looks like it too.
    2) Must i use an rms meter? Can't i just mute the lyrics and see what total db of the instrumental is at and just blend in the vocals until the combined mix(voc + instru) goes 0.5db(soft), 1db(louder) and 1.5db(loudest) respectively? Like if the instrumental is peaking at -6db(without rms meter) for example, can't i just blend in the vocals until the combined mix is at -5.5db(soft), -5db(louder) and -4.5db instead?
    3) I see Maat Meter is now only $35. Should i get it u think? Before when you made the video seems like it was over $100, that's insane!
UPDATE: Never mind! The $35 is the Maat Meter but the Meter you are using in the video is Maat Meter MK 2 instead which is indeed over $100 lol. I saw you posted the link in one of the comments below so i thought it was on discount/price drop or something but it seems you just got the link wrong. I'm not sure if the $35 Maat Meter could achieve the same thing doesn't look like it however.
    4) Any alternatives you know of that i can buy for cheaper to meter like the Maat Meter MK 2 at this time?
Thanks in advance i appreciate your time.

hey - thanks for the questions:
      1) the MAAT meter is a great tool, so if you want it - go for it. But is it woth $179 bucks for a meter? Or should you use that money for something else that will improve your mixes more? (like education, like the book pinned in the comments? *cough* *cough*)
      2) yes - you MUST use an RMS meter. Peak volume is way too erratic and will not provide very stable readings.
      3) Yes - there are 2 versions, the MK2 is the only one I would recommend there... BUT there are alternatives.
      4) what DAW do you use? There might be a stock option. You can also look at LUFS meters - they are essentially the same practically speaking, and simply have a little bit more nuance with frequency. (this might actually be MORE effective than the RMS meter to be honest)
Thanks - and let me know #4 and I'll point you in the right direction.

@@ObjectiveMixing thanks so so much for your detailed reply. Just for this itself, I'm going to get your $5 book later 100%. I'm sure I will learn some things from it. I'm not completely new to mixing vocals but I've never been like 100% confident on where I should leave their fixed volumes. I always had to export the mix to reference on various speakers, then come back to fix it the volume of the vocals at least once and at most 2 or sometimes 3 times max. I wish to be more confident and your video was the first of it's kind I have seen in relation to setting vocals levels to the mix! I wished I found this video a year ago, when I started learning how to mix vocals, coming from just a producer who makes alright beats in hip hop/trap that is. Mixing beats is so much easier for sure but vocals are a whole different ball game.
Last questions if you dont mind...
      1) Yesterday I was using an lufs meter(full version of Youlean Loudness Meter) and I tried the using the same concept as your video. I pulled up some of my recent vocal mixes and gosh I realized my vocals have always between -0.5 lufs to -1.3 lufs range. By that I mean let's say my average lufs for the unmastered(before limiter) instrumental mix was 16 lufs with vocals muted and within -15.5 lufs to -14.3 lufs when vocals are unmuted(vocals + instrumentals combined)
It feels great because I've been doing this by ear but it was really hard when I just got started a year ago when my ear was never trained and my reference headphones was really hyped and inaccurate! Learned so much in just 1 year and now(since 2 months ago) I dont cringe anymore when i listen to my newer voc mixes and honestly mostly enjoy them though I havent considered releasing anything yet.
2)Am I doing the above(1) correctly with the Lufs meter I'm using. Same concept right? As far as -0.5 lufs(soft), -1.0 lufs (louder) and -1.5 lufs (loudest)? So get the total lufs for the instrumental first without vocals and apply the same thing to increase combined mix with vocals and bring it to an additional -0.5 to -1.5 lufs more/louder?
      3) For rap/hip/trap I can shoot for at least -1 lufs to -1.5 lufs louder and almost treat it like Pop(outta water) and in your face for the most part right?
      4) oh I use fl studio yes the have some meters in there like wave candy that shows rms also if I wanted to use that but should I just stick with Youlean loudness meter and use the lufs as you mention its potentially better to do so?
Thank you so so very much. Will be purchasing the book later, guaranteed, when I get on the comp. Your time and effort is really appreciated. I wish you nothing but success!

    • @ObjectiveMixing

You can just use any LUFS or RMS meter. Just try to find one with a slow response rate. The gear is not the magic here. The links below but I highly recommend that you do not buy it. I don't even use this meter anymore personally in favor of stock options for ease of use.
