I lost 2 ebay auctions for this in the last 10 seconds. Once was in 1999 and the other 2001, never have bothered since. This is one of 3 or 4 GI Joe USA/Canada vehicles I am missing.
I played with GI Joe figures for only a few years but never recall any black or "cobra" toy sets. It would make sense for hasbro to redo older models but its not very creative. the GI joe vamp vehicle with lance "clutch" Steinberg is more well known.
Thank you for another amazing video full of details. Though I wonder how much Hasbro themselves were consistent in the type of plastic used. Time after time you present obscure accessories such as weapons that use the exact same mould, and the only difference is a slightly darker tone of plastic they used. How can you be sure, as collector, they used the same plastic during the entire production run? Do you have any insight into the specifics how Hasbro ran its factory? Might make an interesting video itself, considering the amount of knowledge you obviously need to be a serious collector.Fascinating to me how much there is to know about G.I. Joe, really. On the surface, it's just some toy. But to you, it's so much more. Thank you for all your stuff!
That would be an interesting story to research, but I think a collector who focuses on pre-production and variation would be in a better position to comment on factory variations. What I do know about Hasbro's factory process is a confusing mess of running changes, changing price-point-per-item calculation, changing factories (Hong Kong, China, Brazil and Indonesia) and worldwide release tolerances - all of which span over 13 years of toy production! Honestly, I don't think I could handle doing a video about this hairy subject on my own.
I had the black missile launcher with the Cobra Stinger as a kid. I was pretty sure they were a set from Consumers Distributing and not Sears because I never saw the black Cobra version of the missile launcher (MMS?) sold alone. I got the ASP separately, so I don't think it was the '84 Sears Cobra Combat Set.
The MSV is definitely from Sears (it's in their '83 catalog). You may be mistaking the black MMS from the 1985 Sears exclusive SMS set (which was liquidated at several other retailers a year later). It's even possible that CD may have gotten Sears overstock of either the MSV or SMS. Either that or your memory is playing tricks on you and you're mixing up Sears with CD.
I just recall the stinger was part of a set with the missile launcher. I got the ASP separately. I was 11 at the time, so it's likely I'm misremembering. Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.
Sorry, I misunderstood the part about the Stinger being part of the set. Don't worry about misremembering things, I do that all the time! It doesn't help when Hasbro keeps re-using the same molds and making similar sets year after year...
The prices for obscure items like the MSV seem to vary widely. Someone once offered me $2k (box, complete mint MSV and blueprints). I've seen a boxed incomplete one go for under $1k (not sure of actual value as it was part of a lot). A loose one went for $300 to $400 recently, but that might go up or down depending on how many are on the market at the same time. I remember an incomplete one going for as little as $40. I don't remember what was missing or if it was described incorrectly leading to buyers missing it.
MSV...My Stolen Vamp?
MSV... Missile Support Vehicle?
I had the MSV as a kid, I think I got it in a box at a garage sale. However it was just the jeep and was missing all the parts including the basket.
