- Surfline's Wave of the Winter event is a one-of-a-kind contest where the single-best wave of the entire season is awarded $25,000. This documentary highlights the 2012/2013 winter season on Oahu's fabled North Shore and is chock-full of every single mental wave that was ridden from November through February. There's also plenty of colorful insight from some of the world's best surfers.
Their focus was so much on it looking pretty, which I understand, but my favorites were the trashy barrels that dudes had to suffer through yet still ended up getting nearly 10 second barrel rides on.
Wow, who knew how beautiful and special each wave is. Pipe & Backdoor always have perfect barrels. It would be a dream to surf them!
they should also start 'WIPEOUT OF THE WINTER'

Some of those waves were being ridden by people who new what they were doing, some people were just so lucky to get those waves. Some people were hunting for the best wave like john john or kelly.

Well, I am just speaking from my experience as a 30+ years wave rider, and after I made my drop, it was pretty much a matter of stalling or accelerating, but beyond that, there really isn't that much to it. Popping air or even a well-timed, makeable floater or Z cutback is more challenging. But, and I qualify here, I surfed some breaks in Mexico and at Pipe, making that drop isn't easy--the bottom drops out fast.

Picture it. Going left (my backside), you drop in, gain speed--pumping--out pacing the breaking wave, then cut back to the breaking lip (carved or flash-slashing a 180--reversing direction), hit that lip and then turn back into the direction of the left-breaking wave. That was me going backside, but here is a video visual of it going right (search RUclips for this title): easy Surfing Tutorial: Backside Snap (goofy foot)HD. Like Lopez says at about 15:20, size and style are the most sought after characteristics. The footage of this past winter pales in comparison to some other winters. Many other winters were so epic. The riders (style) are terrific, but the waves were not really impressive (size).

The monetary incentive, false and empty, continues to pull new generations into a trap - that being the mentality that competition and "judging" are somehow relevant in the most artistic and subjective areas of human culture. Enough with the bloated egos and self-interest, when are we going to evolve to the point where we realize surfing is for fun and WORK is something we should do for the benefit of the greater good?? Cheers.
You said it right. Falas certa! the thing i notice about those surfers caught up in that crap, they never seemed stoked, they never surf satisfied, and they kick out of every wave thinking of nothing else but snaking another wave, Their loss.
mozdickson I don't think pro surfers are dissatisfied at all. When you surf at that level of course there is going to be a competitive atmosphere and you're a dope if you think these guys just show up snaking people

How exciting, guys dropping in and going straight ahead. What skill that takes and shows. I don't know how many other's of you have been barreled on the North Shore, but I have been, many, many times and other than the drop, it doesn't take much skill--It's pretty automatic: you just follow the path of the wave. It feels good, sure, but as a spectator I find it pretty boring and a bit like the Emperors New Clothes.

You wait for a lull in the waves, then go like hell. Sometimes, you get pushed back and you have to start all over again. These surfers are in incredible shape. The average person would be exhausted paddling in 10-15 seconds.
You paddle around the waves from the sides and then move horizontally to where it's breaking.
Well, maybe not boring to do, but pretty much boring to watch, especially again and again. It's like Picasso with one esel, one palate, one color. Even surfing the North Shore, I prefered waves where I could get in front of the tube and carve, slash, Z-cutback, float and rain spray on myself and others. God I love to make it rain.
I dont think that is true because there is a lot more to do to get barreled that just follow the path of the wave...

No, ask the pros, it's pretty much a matter of making the drop and either stalling or accelerating. Or you can watch the vid again and come to your own conclusions. Well, I lived it and I know it's full of all this mysticism, this being tubed thing, and it's nice and all, but I bet you dollars to donuts, that I can train a kook to drop in, hold a line and or stall or accelerate quicker than I could teach a kid to float, pop-air, Z-cutback or super-spray a fan.

I love surfing but we knew back in the early 70s commercialization was on the horizon. The term professional surfer was still kinda of a joke and only a sell outs entered contests. These days its what most young surfers dream of and or aspire to.
