Regarding the plastic, I use cardboard ( not the glossy kind) and cover with grass clippings or hay. Get boxes from the tip behind shops. Completely FREE. Also it will allow rain to penitrate the ground and it breaks down over the year and makes the soil richer.
I do this, it works great as a weed barrier. Cover it with mulch and nobody knows it's there.
I've done this as well due to budget reasons and it worked lovely. The soil becomes much healthier and so many worms appear.
I think the problem with the vegetable seeds is the depth of the planters. They need more light to germinate. I ran into the same problem with my tower gardens because I didn't know I had to keep the tiers separate and in full sun until the seedlings were big enough to get light once the tiers were stacked. Live and learn. 😆 Getting the seeds to fully mature plants at this time of year really depends on the length of your growing season. Our growing season lasts until mid to late October, so most things will be fully harvestable before frost even now. By the way, the cleanup of the house walls is fantastic, and I love the swags and wreath you made!
Thank you! ☺️ yes I think you are 100% right, I need to raise the soil level! Adding it to my to do list 👍☺️🌸🍀🌻💕
Beautiful!!!!!!!! You've done an AMAZING job!! And no, you won't be crazy for trying to transform that cute little semicircle into your cottage garden dream. Go for it!!!!!!!!!!! You only live once!
Thank you so much!! I think I will give it a good go 😬🤞☺️🌸🍀
Try net curtains to keep the chickens out of your pumpkins! Where it comes to seeds, try folding in the bottom of toilet rolls and then use them as pods and plant them after they have grown! You can store them in ice-cream tubs (I wrapped mine in scrap fabric and a ribbon) and just leave them by your kitchen window! I use wooden cutlery for plant lables! Hope this helps!!
I think you have done a great job so far, time , patience and plenty of natural rainfall will help your new garden to develop. Well done.
Thank you very much! Your right, by the end of the summer it’s going to be magical 🤩🌸💕☀️☺️
You’re doing a great job!! In just a few years you’ll have a garden just like your inspiration pictures!!
I love the pot turned over with the flowers. It is perfect.
Greetings from California! I stumbled on your channel, looking for ideas for my garden transformation. I love how fearless you are in trying things out and just seeing what happens. I also find your creativity so inspiring. And yes, do the semicircle! It will be magical!
Hello California! Thanks so much I really appreciate that! I think I might give it a good go 😬🤞 best of luck to you and your garden 🌸☺️💕🍀
I'd be careful with seeds bought from big shops, especially if they're on clearance. They usually don't store them well or sell them expired so the seeds are basically dead. It sucks because it can be so disheartening for new gardeners. And a good tip for planting seeds is that you only want to bury them 2-3 times as deep as the seed is big and be patient with them. I've had seeds I'd given up on come up 6-7 months after planting - unless you want the space for something else. One more thing, if you can, just do a quick google on new plants to make sure you don't accidentally plant something invasive or really hard to deal with, once something nasty like that gets established it can be a nightmare trying to get it out.
I'm so jealous of the hydrangea! They're hard to get where I am. The whole area is coming together really nicely!
Nettles and comfrey make good fertiliser you leave them soaking in water for a couple of weeks I think it is. I can’t remember the ratio to add to water but I’m sure the info would be easy to find online
Awesome idea thank you, I have plenty of nettles to work with ☺️🌸🌻
My dad always did that he use to catch rain water in barrel comfrey & fish blood or nettles it does stink, keep the egg shells around the plants, just found your YT channel 💚❤️
These long videos must be a beast to edit but I loved it. Your home is beautiful, well done 💚
Thank you! ☺️🌸🍀💕
Your hard work is really paying off, everything looks wonderful!
Thank you so much!!! ☺️ 🌸🍀💕
You have a lovely garden & home! The progress you made is stunning. Thank you for sharing with us. As far as protecting seeds and seedlings I use plastic milk jugs or water bottles or jugs. But glass jars will work as well until they outgrow them. I don't have chickens but I do have chipmunks and other critters. They love to dig up and eat everything. I just keep reseeding. 🙂🌱
Thank you very much I appreciate that! ☺️🌸 I actually did try the milk jug idea a couple of weeks ago and it did work for the chickens but the dogs found them very fun to chew 🤦♀️ lol but I never thought to use glass jars that’s a great idea!!
The garden has filled out nicely. I very much like the way you saved the broken pot and made such a cute grouping of flowers. I think you should put a plan together to remake the gravel filled circle. Work from the inside out and it won't seem so daunting. I think you can do it!
Thank you very much ☺️🌸💕🍀 I think I just might give it a go! What’s the worst that can happen 🤷♀️🤔
Loved this video, don't mind the length as it allows us to see the whole part and hard work that goes into the transformation. It's a big yes for the semi circle transformation!
Awesome thank you!! I think I might give it a good go 😬🤞🌸💕☺️
I loved the transformation so far. The broken pot idea was so clever. Well done you..😊❤
Thank you very much!! ☺️☀️🌸💕
Love your garden so neat and tidy and love what you did with the broken planter
Thank you!! ☺️☀️🌸 I try not to let anything go to waste 💕
You did a really good job! The garden turned out so pretty!
Thank you!!! 🌸☺️💕🍀
Another lovely video 👍 thoroughly enjoyed it and all the transformations 👍 p.s love your new fur baby 😍
Thank you so much I appreciate that! Princess is adorable right, another wild thing added to this pack lol ☺️🌸💕🌻
Bravo! Very beautiful and frugal ❤
I love how your garden is transforming and that you buy the half dead plants, I never thought of doing that, I just assumed they would die! The swags and wreath are beautiful, I bought the sunflower garlands from home bargains recently but never thought to mix them with tree branches ❤
The plastic greenery will turn blueish in the sun. They are OK for a non sunny area or for indoors. Don't be afraid of mint, just grow it in a container! I love your house and how creative you are being on a budget. This is a wonderful example for many young people! You may be able to ask neighbors for cuttings or rooted plants they are splitting such as Iris or Day Lily!! Free plants!
Thank you! ☺️ have relocated the mint into a pot and sourcing cuttings as we speak, thanks for the tips appreciate it 🌸💕🍀☔️
You are very creative and frugal. Love the garden, expecially what you did with the broken pot. Lovely!
Thank you! You learn to be frugal when things are tight 😅 it’s a good skill for life ☺️🌸💕🍀
The surrounding countryside is gorgeous!!!
So inspirational. Thank you for sharing your transformation on a budget. It’s beautiful.
Thank you so much that’s kind of you to say!!! 🌸☺️💕🌻🍀
I have an idea - before you fill out the second semicircle, is there a way you can keep the chickens out of that bit so you can start seeds and cuttings off in pots. Just thinking that you could use it as a nursery area as you can get good deals on seeds and plug plants sometimes that you could grow them there until they get big enough that the chicks aren't interested anymore. It would mean that you can get smaller (cheaper) plants or multipacks of perennials and let them grow on before you plant them out.
Yes great idea! I am seriously considering fencing off a small area just for growing seeds. I tried plastic green houses last year but they couldn’t withstand our weather 🤦♀️☔️🌸
Wow what a difference beautiful garden now 🌿🌻 🪴 🌺
Thank you! ☺️🍀💕
Your garden is coming along beautifully.. it takes time and yes it can be expensive. My garden is mostly pots as I’m a renter but she’s coming alive now in Australia with our winter . Xxx
You have done beautiful things in your garden. I applaud all that you have accomplished with spending so little. 🐦🐦🐦
Thank you so much 😊 I appreciate that. Might take longer on a small budget but it’s an adventure ay 💕🌸🍀🌻
I love what you are doing!!
Cuttings are very easy to take, but be quick, the best season is late spring, early summer.
Take the cuttings from the green tips. Typically, woody cuttings won't grow roots. Cut them right below a leaf nodule, about 3-4 inches long. Remove all but the last 2-3 leaves, and put in well draining soil or in water. I do mine on my kitchen window in water. That way, I remember to top up the water...
Take online lessons with a pinch of salt. Trial and error is your best bet.
I absolutely afore your bee happy wreath! It turned out fantastic!
Greetings from (too) sunny Spain!!!
Thank you!!! And yes I am for sure doing cuttings asap, great idea putting them on the windowsill thank you☺️🌸🍀💕
I love a long video. Garden looks fab and the bleach did a great job! The wee puppy is so cute. 🤎
Thanks Lynsey! ☺️🌸 another wild thing to add to the pack lol
You could plant seeds in a protected area and let them get established, then transplant them to the chicken zone when they're big enough to handle it.
House transformation is amazing! Good job!
Thank you! Yes I’m thinking the same, I need a separate area for seed growing 🤔💭
Yes you can definitely do your semi circle like the picture.. everything is coming together.
Thank you! I think I might! ☺️🌸🍀💕
I love your videos and your garden! A girl after my own heart, some might say cheapskate but I say savvy! Why pay full price when you can get a bargain??
I've taken lots of inspiration from you, so thank you😊
Can't wait for the next video ❤
Aw thank you so much Jennie that’s kind of you to say! For sure we gotta save where we can, even if I had a lot of money I think I would still shop the sales 😅 take care! ☺️💕🌸🍀🌻
Black plastic will make mold. Use the cardboard. Put it under those rocks and under your paving stones. It's free. You need to sow seed. You can save and store for next year. Get perennials near end of season and nurse them through til Spring. Look up a place to get free paint. Some paint stores have cheap mistakes they sell for a song. Your rural neighbors likely have free fertilizer. Just look for cows or horses.
I love your swags and wreath, the fresh greenery is lovely
Thank you babz! ☺️🌸💕☔️
I just got a cheap arch like that 2nd hand. I added lattice to it with zip ties. It looks great if i say so myself.
Wow! Everything looks so lovely! I love what you did with the tractor tire❤️ It was worth the money. I’m very impressed 😊
Aw thank you I appreciate that!! ☺️🌸☀️☔️💕
Great job! The garden looks great 😍
Don't give up on the veggies. Looking forward to see your garden grow, especially veggies😊
Thank you! The one little carrot leaf gave me faith, I’ll keep at the veggies for sure 🌸☺️💕🍀
Fabulous 😊❤
Using the right soil is a must I use organic compost too , feed the soil not the plant .
Ground up egg shells are great for the soil . Companion planting is great for helping them survive.
You’re doing an amazing job , I thrift my house for things to go in the garden . Or people on gum tree give loads of garden freebies away . Can’t wait for the next video 😊
Thank you! ☺️🌸🍀💕
We do have a compost bin for all our chicken waste but I need to up my soil game that’s for sure 😅
The soil has been a definite game changer for my garden I’ve seen a massive difference. Shame you didn’t live closer I could give you loads of seeds and plants .
Love the progress of your garden you are doing so well 😊it’s looking great it really is .
Thank you that is so kind of you to offer! ☺️🌸💕 I am researching and trying to improve my soil without having to buy all new compost, so fingers crossed that helps even a little lol 🤞😬🌸💕
It’s amazing what you can add to improve it for free . It will all come together perfectly 😊. You are doing such a great job 😊
Very nice❤❤❤❤
Great progress! Laura 🌸🌸🌸
Thank you!! 🌸☺️💕
I have one of those tubular arbors. I tied mine to stakes (you can also put the bottom ends over rebar driven into the ground). Get some rust-stop paint to paint the whole thing. Mine's over 20 years old and I'm still using it in the veggie garden.
If you pull a plant out of a pot and it looks like all roots, make sure you loosen the roots really well and spread them out in the planting hole so they don't keep growing in a circle.
Thank for great tips appreciate it!! ☺️🌸💕🍀
Thank you for letting me spend some enjoyable time in your garden today. You motivated me to check a few things off my to-do list that keep getting pushed down. I understand very tight budgets and I think you've done a wonderful job so far. And in the future you have much room for redesign and additions, it will be fun to watch. Regarding your slugs, check out the beer method. That would be budget friendly as well. Happy day!
Thank you very much!! It can be hard on small budgets but rewarding too right ☺️🍀🌸👍 I will check it out, thanks for the tip!
Oh, wow everything turned out so nice. You have done such a great job. I love how it looks. 😊🇨🇦
Thanks so much Chris! Appreciate it ☺️🌸🍀💕
It looks absolutely gorgeous thank you so much for sharing.
Thank you Louise! And thanks for watching ☺️🌸🍀💕☔️
Hydrangeas are really easy to take cuttings from so you can get loads of plants from the ones you have. You could maybe try starting seeds off in pots before planting in the ground and hopefully the chickens won’t pull them up. Have just found your channel and am loving it already, can’t wait to see how the garden progresses. You’ve also given me some ideas to try 😁
Thank you!! I will for sure take cuttings from the hydrangeas, if my garden could be filled with just those I would be very happy 😅🌸💕☀️☔️
If you paint the chicken coop black it sort of disappears, especially the wire. I think your garden and house is starting to look gorgeous, you’re giving me inspiration 😊
I forgot to say that your house and garden look beautiful!!
Thank you Christine! ☺️🌸💕
Well done, Melissa! Your garden is looking lovely.
I love arches in gardens!! A solution to get your trellis more in the ground for stability is to wet the soil deeply then push the trellis without disturbing the soil too much. If your seeds are under the plastic they might not sprout. For you pumpkin obelisk plant the seeds towards the outside then start training the vines up them. If you want to save the flower pot from the dump there is a glue you can use to repair it. Your lupine is beautiful and the hydrangea as well!!
Thank you, great tips! I did wonder if I could repair the flower pot 🤦♀️😅 I will know for next time
Have you thought of setting up a paypal or something? I bet I'm not the only viewer who would pitch in for garden supplies. Lots of youtube channels do that.
Wow that’s really kind of you to offer that, I didn’t know people could do that, I will look into it, thank you ☺️🌸💕🌻
Great work! The house is an amazing transformation!
I love your channel and your garden progress. Very inspiring for mine! ✨💗
Thank you! ☺️ good luck to you and your garden 🍀🌸☺️💕
Thanks for sharing a wonderful garden tour today and your new project and how you went about doing it
Thank you Sandy! ☺️💕🌸🍀🌻
Well done 🎉🎉🎉 great job , as for the semi circle , go for it !!!
New subscriber here :) I love your channel so far! I LOVE the results you've been able to get on a budget. Such an awesome job you've done. Cheers from Vancouver, Canada 🇨🇦 ❤
Thanks so much I appreciate that!!! ☺️🌸💕🍀
Great job! Your vision has become your reality and your efforts have paid off. Keep doing what you love!
Thank you very much ☺️🌸💕🍀
Hi I love your videos really good tips. I was just thinkingbif you can get a B&q store soon , now they are selling off a lot of perennials that don't look so great but with a bit of compost a pinch of tomato fertilizer in the bottom of the planting hole, they'll be great in a couple of weeks. Buy the fertilizer in a box in Lidl it's quite cheap. Just an idea for your circular bed hope it helps, best wishes from Dublin
Thank you, great tip I’ll have to give Lidl a visit! ☺️🍀🌸💕☔️
The raise beds might need more soil to the top, so the sun can reach your seedlings. The side of the raised bed cast a shadow during much of the day.
I too made this mistake this year in pots. I got one purple basil plant even though I put so many seeds in the pot.
I hope that’s helps you in the raised beds.
Thank you for the tip I think you’re totally right I need to raise the soil surface!
Your garden is looking so beautiful. You have done an awesome job of painting and cleaning. I love your vision for the large circle area. Go for it!
Have a fantastic day!❤🌻🌷
Thank you very much! ☺️ I think I might give it a good go 😬🤞😅 hope you have a lovely day too!! 🌸🌸🍀💕☺️
I love how you’re using just a little money to make improvements to your cottage garden. I need the mature plants in my garden. We have bunnies, squirrels, above and below ground insects, birds and cats wondering in the garden and destroying the young plants. And mature plant can be very expensive. It’s so frustrating to plant stuff. You’re doing an amazing job.
Thank you!!! It really is a challenge, people underestimate how determined little animals can be, even if you try to keep them away from something, they want to go there even more 😅🍀☺️🌸💕
Oh gosh. DO NOT PLANT MINT! It’s super invasive
It is. You have to plant it in containers. A garden book I read said "plant it and jump back!" It is that aggressive.
Thanks for letting me know guys, I have relocated the mint into a flower pot ☺️🌸🌻💕😅
I loved watching your garden transformation and your enthusiasm was just joyful to witness. Enjoy, gardening is a great tonic x
Aw thank you! I am happy you enjoyed it, take care 🌸☺️🍀💕☔️
Dont know how big a tractor tyre is but i grow pumpkins and they need a lot of space . Courgettes are great plants for children . You get fast food ! Its too late for seed now but you might get a plant. Good luck. It all looks great fair play to you.
It is looking so good! Could you paint the tire white or green to go more with the cottage garden theme? Waiting for everything to grow is the hardest part!
New subscriber here ❤ I just got the news of my own allotment and it needs alot of work. The ground is just too hard for me to dig or break up in this heat, so I’m on a hunt for a old shed and greenhouse to try to start a few things if I take my raised beds to the allotment this year
It looks like your soil might need amending. Do you have a compost bin where you can put chicken manure and plant waste and make some nice rich soil?
Great idea, everytime the coop gets cleaned it can be added to a compost bin or pile and it will be free compost.
@@marikalombard7289 Chicken poo is really good fertilizer, too.
Yes, this! Was going to comment on using the great fertilizer that she gets for free from the chickens.
@beahallberg7822 It needs to be aged or it can burn plants, but it's a great free resource. The contents of the tire look like dirt, as opposed to soil. Soil is rich and alive, dirt, not so much. Pumpkins are heavy feeders so they'll need a boost. Might be some old horse or cow manure around that would work.
I do indeed have a compost bin and for sure my chicken poop goes straight in there, we actually got our first load of soil from it this summer ☺️ the soil around the veg patch is different in different areas, there is A LOT of rocks in some parts from when the house was built and then some parts are grand, it’s not ideal I know but I will add some compost to the tyre ☺️🌸💕🍀🌻
Power wash that brick and paint your address number to make it stand out. Also the chicken pen paint. Looks great.
Thank you! I’ve been thinking of making a new plaque for our house number!
Bleach and Water goes well!
It's a bad idea to put your pumpkins in that tire I know from experience pumpkins need a lot of space to grow
Your gardening skills are inspiring. You’re doing a lovely job and keeping everything budget friendly is an incredible task. I’m in the USA so not sure where I can find discounted plants and accessories like you do, but I’m definitely going to try. Thank you for sharing your journey on creating that beautiful English Cottage Garden.🪴
Thanks so much that’s kind of you to say! I’m not sure where to look in America but a lot of people suggest plant swaps on Facebook or local gardening groups maybe, good luck to you and your garden! 🍀🌸☺️💕
Lowes and Home Depot have a clearance rack! As for accessories.. dollar store in spring has some good stuff. I haven't found any other place for really affordable stuff
@@Brookelogan94 Thank you for the info. I may have to start stopping at Garage/Tag Sales to see what I can find. I could use some large ceramic planters.
