- My Tasmanian Nightscapes Road Trip continues with a stop off at the beautiful Lake Mackintosh. Close to the sleepy town of Tullah in the north west of Tasmania this beautiful location is a perfect spot for some nightscape photography.
The weather wasn't co-operating however and I had to work hard to get any shots. But in the end I'm very pleased with what I got.
My nightscapes in Tasmania series will continue with the next episode from the mysterious and amazing Ben Lomond National Park.

Beautiful!!!!!!!!!!! Very very good!!!!!!!
Thank you for your kind words
Even on "cloudy nights", you, again, manage everything so wonderfully... The Best!
Thanks Carole. I know I can always count on you for great encouragement.
I’m a real fan of you! Even on clear nights with no moon and perfect parameters, I still struggle to get things "not so awful"! 😂
@@carolelabrecque2799 Practice makes perfect Carole
I learn so much from you brother..
Cheers from kelowna B.C. 🇨🇦
Thanks very much for watching Rick, really appreciate your comments.
Thank you Richard for sharing also videos showing frustrating nights. That happens anyway and it is good for an amateur like me to see that a professional nightscape photografer has also to struggle with conditions that cannot be changed. By the way, the landscape with the mountains and lake could also be located in my home country, Austria. So your approach to those locations is very interesting for me and I am going to watch also your other Tasmanian videos. All the best, Günter
Thank you so much Gunter. I also have a more recent Tasmanian series here: ruclips.net/p/PLAYKmqkUeSM-IvbwqV9NH37Ke2B0R5A2v
Richard, Your videos are always interesting to watch. Your trip provided you some nice new images
Thanks for watching John, really appreciated
Even on a bad day you still amaze !! Beautiful photos my friend!
Thanks again ... it's really just a matter of persistence I suppose.
thanks for sharing your trip to Tasmania, looks like an great place, cheers
Thanks very much. Tasmania is a wonderful place to spend time at
C'est toujours un grand plaisir de regarder tes productions! Merci de nous faire profiter de ton excellent travail.
Thank you so much for watching and commenting Doume, really appreciated.
Fantastic advice about your own backyard and it’s beauty. I also think that I’d be absolutely over the moon with images that you are frustrated getting. Once again spectacular images although there was some cloud cover. I think that this clouds actually add to the images. Although you were after the milky way core they were still stunning.
Thanks a lot for your comments Adam. I totally agree my friend.
Sorry it didn't quite pan out for you, still a very enjoyable video and great images to. Tasmania looks amazing. I loved your comment about making the most of your local area and locations. I can be pretty negative about where I live as it is flat and fairly featureless, that is going to change. It certainly isn't mountainous or jurassic but what we do have is a lot of coastal wrecks, windmills and castles, which I hope will feature well with night photography. I think I have decided on the Rokinon 14mm f2.4. It looks a good blend of quality, focal length, weight and cost. The Sigma 14mm Art looked an excellent lens but cost and weight swayed me towards the Rokinon. Thank you for your help and advice. I'm like everyone else looking forward to the next episode in your Tassie trip.
Thanks a lot for watching Mike. I've heard very good things about that 14mm f2.4
I found your series after seeing the two Andrews and Richard's adventure. I'm heading down to Tassie in Oct/Nov and greatly looking forward to it (just a wee bit different from SE Qld).
Thanks so much for watching my friend. I'm currently working through another Tasmanian series if you check my latest videos.
I love the Southern Cross photo absolutely stunning.
Thanks very much for watching Malcolm ... really appreciate it.
Yeah, I hate it when the clouds roll in, especially when you drive an hour or more after the weather said it was only going to be partly cloudy then find out you can't see a star in site all night lol. Even more disheartening on a big trip like this of course, but as you say, it's still enjoyable to visit just the same and you're video came out great anyway too.
Thanks heaps. If you watch the next 2 Tasmanian videos you'll see the weather changed for the better.
@@nightscapeimages.richard I'm watching them now. I was hoping that was going to be the case! Glad to hear.
As usual thanks for sharing ....loved the drone shots..
Thanks so much Jo
Hi Richard, love the drone footage on this video, the rainforest shots also interesting aspect of your location scouting. I am really enjoying these Tassie video's. Thanks Heaps.
Really appreciate your comment Peter, thanks for watching.
Richard , also a fan if Ben Fewtrel on3legs and he is a huge fan of this place and now i see your down there to. As is Andrew Marr , Looks like i need to get myself down to this amzing place. Also kudos for calinf out the rubish dumpers, very sad cosnidering what efforts had to be taken to conserve this area.
Thanks a lot for watching .. yes it's a beautiful part of the world that's for sure.
Richard beautiful this my family 5 generations hometown and that Mountain is called Mount Farrell it has a little glacial lake on top that you can hike too called Lake Herbert I'm a photographer myself and have photographed the Milky Way from there its stunning and I've also got beautiful aurora Australis shots from there too your lucky to have found it on a quiet few days Tullah and both of it's lakes are crowed with tourist these days
Thanks so much for watching Susan. Yes it's a beautiful spot . .love everywhere in Tasmania . .I'll be back.
Thank you for another great video, love those photos.
Really appreciate you watching Jose
What filters do you use on your Mavic? I completely agree it is a fantastic drone. Again thank you for taking the time to make and post this and all your other videos. Cheers
Hi Dylan, at this stage I'm not using any filters. I did have some DJI ND filters on my Mavic 1 but i was always frustrated when changing from video to still mode mid flight. On the mavic 2 because you can change the aperture I haven't worried about filters.
@@nightscapeimages.richard Agreed the f stop can be changed but only so far without having to compensate with shutter speed in very bring cases. The change in the light coming in can be drastic and beautiful. I likely went to big and bought almost all the Polar Pro filters. I use the CP filter every time I fly except say over snow, then I would use a darker ND or PL. I have used the ND64 to get 2 second long exposure at the beach in day light, it was impressive at a blow hole. I am no expert but I would highly suggest the CP filter from Polar Pro if you only buy one. I have used the PL8 and PL16 on very bright days with good results also. I thought I would share what has worked good for me so far.
@@DylanPankow Thanks a lot Dylan, I'll check them out. A few friends of mine have the Polar Pro filters and really like them. Appreciate the advice.
@@nightscapeimages.richard You are more than welcome. You have taught me so much and brought light to what I did not know what is possible, for that I thank you. Again I own almost every filter, the CP, PL 4, 8, and 16 are my most used filters out of all of them.
Although the clouds did not allow to take shots of the Milky Way, I thank you for sharing your good experiences through this video. I am always looking forward to the new tutorial that you will share, as they are very well explained and very well done.
Many thanks indeed Rodolfo
We live on a peninsula between two distant mountain ranges and near some pretty sizable cities, so photographing the night sky is frequently challenging. ( We only have 4 or 5 clear nights a month, frequently around the full moon.) I was never one to back off from a challenge though.
Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching Theresa ... I'd be happy to see whatever images you can come up with.
@@nightscapeimages.richard I'd love to get your suggestions. I'm on Instagram, just under my name (theresacrice). Let me know if you'd rather see them some other way. Thanks!
@@theresarice7289 I'll check them out Theresa
Thank you for sharing this - your videos are an inspiration to all us 'apprentice' nightscape photographers.
Thanks for watching Eugene and taking the time to comment, really appreciated
Stellar work Richard, I also am madly in love with Tasmania and from Rural Victoria. Hope to bump into you on our travels.
Thanks a lot Gary. I've seen some of your deep sky stuff ... very impressive indeed.
Looks like a great location! That was one of my favourite things about Tassie - all of that beautiful rainforesty goodness just at arms reach everywhere! Fingers crossed for some clear skies soon 😉
Thanks heaps Richard. The next 2 videos feature much clearer night skies. I've been home for a couple of weeks now and very much missing the beauty of Tasmania. Next video will be out tomorrow. Hope you're going well ...!!!
When the blustery cold sleet falls that’s when you fish for the giant rainbow trout in that lake
Yes I can imagine they'd be there in droves. Thanks for watching.
Bad luck mate, weather played up again. Loved the video :)
Big thank you as well, now Lake Mackintosh is in my list to visit, wasnt aware that its so beautiful and serene. :)
Thanks a lot Sam .. it's a wonderful relaxing place to visit regardless of the weather.
The clouds keep getting you, i have a very similar experience a lot of the time! Great pics still
Thanks mate ... yes it hung around for the first few days .. cleared up after this location though.
Loverly scenes ,tassi is on bucked list
Coffee and egg bread for breakfast yum
Thanks for shareing
Thanks Phillip. I reckon you have to enjoy the moment when in these amazing locations.
Amazing Youtub channel.... "Thanks for sharing👍" (London UK )
Very pleased you like it Chunky .. many thanks
Never knew it that Macintosh is a lake. Nice video specially those drone shots😍. That drone story is cool.
Thanks again Rajiv
@@nightscapeimages.richard You are one man army, the efforts you put to share your moments and knowledge is highly appreciated. Keep the great work going.🤗
@@DiscoverRajivVlogs Many thanks Rajiv
Despite clouding you still got some fantastic images 👍
Thanks a lot Eltin, appreciate you watching
Great shots Richard. This Tasmanian series has been truly enjoyable.
Thanks a lot Darrell .. .I love Tasmania and the next video location is really spectacular.
Clouds are always a burden in tassie. Should have seen how peeved I was when I wasn't able to get a perfect shot of the blood moon atop kunanyi. Always good to get out there and have fun though. Always pays off in the end aye!
Thanks Rory, yes you're so right about the clouds in Tassie
Hi Richard, Thanks for sharing your travels. Those drone shots are fantastic! Got to be out there to capture those Milky Way. All the best to you.
Thanks Jenny .. always appreciate your support
Lake Burbury is beautiful too Richard, you will have to come for longer.
Plus the East Coast, Cosy Corner North near Binalong has some fantastic large red rocks, on the sea shore, you could do wonders with that location. My son is a tour operator so I get to see the most scenic spots in Tasmania luckily. I really enjoy your videos, thank you.
Thanks so much Liz. I did visit Eddystone Point which is right at the northern tip of the Bay of Fires .. .this will be a future video.
Браво 👏🏻!!!!!!! Супер 👏🏻!!!!!!! Прекрасно !!!!!!!!😚
Thank you so much for watching
Looks like you are getting into the weather that I have had to suffer thru here in Virginia, constantly cloudy..
Yes it's frustrating Cliff. After this night the sky cleared up nicely for my next adventure on the road.
Thanks for sharing the video mate. Tasmania really is beautiful 👌 totally agree re the Mavic 2 Pro. Cheers!
Thanks a lot Adrian
Living at the opposite side of the earth (relative to Tas) it amazes me how geologically similar the places are. Google up Lofoten or Senja and you get the picture. I certainly appreciate the honesty in your videos. We've all been there with the flat batteries and cloudy nights.
Thanks High End TV. Yes it's an amazing world we live in, thanks for watching.
Thanx a lot for the next beautiful part! Your boots on the tree were really fun too :) Anyway, I very like your vlogs together with fine photos/images!! LIKE
Really appreciate your support Alex, and thanks for watching
Why did you choose to take multiple images of the sky? Nicely done!
Just guessing, but it could be because of the cloud cover. With the clouds moving a bit between shots, he'd be able to stitch them together to get as much clear sky as possible.
I took multiple image to reduce the noise in the image. It's a technique called stacking and it works really well. The cloud cover does make it harder though.
Did you use light painting into the mountain and the foreground ?
No I used very long high iso exposures for the foreground on the mountain.
Milky Way or not it was still stunning Richard … great vid.
Thanks heaps Tim
I think youre the only photographer from Tasmania that I have ever heard of =p
Hi Noel, thanks for watching. I don't actually live in Tasmania, this was a road trip ... via boat to get there. There are quite a few very famous photographers from Tasmania.
I agree Richard, Tasmania is so gorgeous. I can’t wait to get back there. Love the drone footage mate, spectacular stuff mate. I also enjoyed the creative shots of the wonderful rainforest, shame how some people just dump their rubbish. Stunning shots Richard, looking forward to the rest of the series.
Thanks again Andrew. This location although beautiful was difficult due to the cloud cover but the next 2 locations were much better in that regard. Appreciate you watching.
Scouting Tasmania and the sky is not clear...but as scouts say: "Be prepared"...! You are good at this, got some fine images...! Happy travels.
Thanks a lot for watching Jakob
whacko ASTROMAN ya havin a good time in tassie happy easter to family have had a go at ASTRO and not all bad but you have said keep goining no matter where you are you see things of beauty you have a good sole but to them arseholes that left rubbish behind my advice is pissoff and dont come back but all of us will enjoy whats left of this great land looking forward to the next adventure cheers an beers bobby j.

OH MAN !! I live in Tasmania!! You've got to stop and have a coffee with a fan next time you are down here :)
Haha ... I did stop for quite a few coffee's Christian ... maybe next time.
Hate litter bugs, they should camp at the landfill or the dump. Got some great shots through the clouds.
Thanks for watching Bruce .. yes it made me quite sad seeing all that rubbish laying around.
What a fantastic looking place great choice
It certainly is a beautiful location Brian ... thanks
You'll have to give your Drone a Dog name so it keeps coming back ;)
Haha .. you might be right there John
1st.
Well done Rajiv, thanks for watching
