“There’s this emperor, and he asks the shepherd’s boy how many seconds in eternity. And the shepherd’s boy says, ‘There’s this mountain of pure diamond. +JCE4515 "And when the entire mountain is chiseled away, you still won't have finished watching The Sound of Music. And you'll enjoy it. You really will"
***** ~No, you've mussed the point. The tale is also referenced in Good Omens. A Demon is trying to persuade an Angel to interfere to prevent the apocalypse, on the grounds that if Earth and Hell are destroyed, and Heaven becomes the only existence, there will be unforeseen negative repercussions. One of which is that only "Pure" Music will exist. Like Hymms. And "The Sound of Music." To get his point across, he tells the of the Bird, to show that not only will he, in an enterity, still be listening to The Sound of Music, but that without Hell, he wouldn't possess the free will to even WANT to listen to something else. The point of the story is both the Angel and the Demon have "Gone Native" and prefer earth to their respective home realms. Both value humans, because the good, and evil they are capable of, vastly outstrips everything both angels and demons are capable of.
Some television characters break the 4th wall, but the Doctor's a lord of time and space. He broke the 12th wall... and ended up on Gallifrey. Now that's talent.
Dear Murray Gold. If even ONE track from Heaven Sent gets left out from the series 9 soundtrack release, then for your own sake, understand this: I'll be coming to find you, and I will never ever stop.
DOCTOR: If you think because she is dead, I am weak, then you understand very little. If you were any part of killing her, and you're not afraid, then you understand nothing at all. So, for your own sake, understand this. I am the Doctor. I'm coming to find you, and I will never, ever stop.
+Dreadpirate404 Same here. The doctor punching away at that wall is the perfect symbolism for dealing with lifes troubles that keep returning. No matter how impossible it seems, you punch them again because that is the right thing to do.

And the little shepard boy said to the king "The Diamond mountain is in the lower Pomerania, and it takes an hour to climb it, an hour to go around it, and an hour to go down it. Every hundred years a little bird comes and sharpens it's beak on it. And when the entire mountain is chiseled away, The first second of Eternity will have passed."
+Christopher Court wallace this is the Doctor who breaks the rules and the most reckless one. Except anything fron him. Although i liked a lot series 9. Episodes 3,4,7,8,11,12 were really good to me. Also the 2 firsts with Missy were good, but not as good as those ones. Episode 11 Heaven Sent is my favorite episode ever on Doctor Who, with Listen from Series 8, and Vincent and The Doctor *.*
It's heartbreaking that the Doctor thought he had faced his darkest moment at the end of the Time War where he had two versions of himself beside him, and when he faces the Veil (his worst nightmare) he's completely on his own and nobody can help him :( :( :( btw +Oswin Pond your soundtrack skills are amazing!!!
However awful that experience must have been, believing that he had committed genocide on two species including his own was probably far more traumatic...
+Casey Park I think the the thought of having to die over and over again for billions of years just so a clone of you can survive it's worse. Or maybe it isn't. You know what, this is a good question.
Deep down my heart I call it song of hope... When I get depressed or thinking of everything I lost I listen to this. Just tells you how far you can go for what or who you love. Non whovians say why we watch doctor who. How will they ever know that doctor who stands for hope?
This is some of the most beautiful music Murray Gold has ever written, and some of the most beautiful music to ever be featured in Doctor Who. What a treat! I cant wait for the soundtrack to be released.
+Ionut Maris I would not! Never. However, I always knew that Tennant would regenerate to some variation of The Doctor's Theme. I knew when I heard "Infinite Potential" from Akhaten, that it would be Smith's regeneration theme. Even before it was announced that he was leaving. And now, here we are again. Capaldi's theme will be Bird by Murry Gold, an extended version of This time there's three of us. The Doctor's regeneration themes are always triumphantly sad and bittersweet. If and when Capaldi leaves us, this will always be the theme I come back to.
+Pseudodonn7 Good point. When Matt announced he was leaving many fans said The Long Song or Infinite Potential should be his regeneration music. Turned out to be the case. I'm also thinking maybe Last Christmas a possibility but time will tell when Peter Capaldi decides to step down.
Well, i liked a lot this new season ,but no. For me the best Doctor Who era was Matt Smith seasons. For me: S1 - 7.0 S2 - 8.0 S3 - 10 S4 - 9.5 S5 - 10 S6 - 9.5 S7 - 10 S8 - 8.5 (I liked a lot The Season Finale) S9 - 9.0
+Fil Bencs I agree S4 and S6 were both really good, but i feel that S9 with episodes like the original 2-parter (The Magician's Apprentice/Witch's Familiar) has been my favorite. This episode as well (Heaven Sent) was incredible and one of the best (if not the best) episodes of the whole of New-Who (The way Capaldi was able to hold up an entire episode on his own was just stunning) . But that's just my opinion :-)
+Fil Bencs He feels more like 'The Doctor' than any of the other New-Who doctors to me. Mainly because of the older actor and thus more emphasis on character development than romance and flirting with the companion. (potential spoilers?) Especially with the "Why is everything sexy?!" line from The Doctor in the Christmas special
It only dawned upon me recently while I was listening to my mega Doctor Who playlist (before seeing this video) that "Breaking the Wall" was in "This Time There is Three of Us". Ah, the musical implications (because there were all 13 Doctors there)...I'm going to miss Murray Gold for musical golden nuggets such as this.
This montage sequence could very well be the greatest piece of fiction in the universe. I can't see how they can ever surpass Heaven Sent. Mind you, I said that about Listen too!
No but seriously, I listened to your version on loop all of last week. Oswin Pond's is an equal gift. This track is absolutely fantastic and is probably the best soundtrack I have ever listened to, especially in Doctor Who. Absolutely love you talented people who cleanse the unreleased music. Of course when it's released I will buy the soundtrack (only if this is in it!). have a good day/evening
I can't even study to this because all I can think about is the episode and how epic and awesome it was. The difficult thing about Doctor Who music is there's so many feels attached to each piece of music.
How many seconds in eternity? The shepperds boy says, there is this mountain made of pure diamond, it takes an hour to climb it and an hour to go around it, and every hundred years a bird comes along and sharpens its beak on the mountain face. And when the whole mountain is chistled away by this then a second in eternity will have passed

Much like the doctor the song gets a little further along as the doctor makes progress. After a musical motif more instruments are added, the song gets a little louder as the doctor’s story gets further as he gets closer to breaking through the wall. The songs gets a little further and further until the very end where the brass come swooping in adding that last bit of excitement as the doctor breaks through

+satsumafez Heaven Sent as we know it had major budget cuts, the unreleased version has Rassilon chasing the Doctor throughout the castle while "Never Gonna Give you Up" by Rick Astley plays the entire episode in the background. Instead of Capaldi reuploading himself billions of times. It's replaced with both Rassilon and the Doctor going insane from the song.

Arguably one of the greatest episodes of New Who alongside The Waters of Mars.
I actually 100% agree with you. The Waters of Mars and Heaven Sent are my top two favorites.

best doctor who episode hands down.
Doctor Who has ascended from a TV show to something beyond magic, beyond godlike!
Goes very well with getting through each workday.
