Just wanted to add, I’ve pretty much eliminated the issue with the battery cover with the adjustment screws. Seems it wasn’t done well at the factory, but I’ve not had the same issues since adjusting it. ALSO, to add some feedback on my commentary on VALUE, I truly believe that at £5k for a carbon ebike with the new Bosch Smart, 750 Battery, Zeb 170mm Fork, decent 12 speed drivetrain from Shimano mix of Deore, XT etc, good Shimano 4 piston brakes, good tyres out the box, good finishing kit, actual local bike shop support and warranty, then yes, its GREAT value!
@Neil Morgan Yes, it made a big difference to how its held onto the bike downtube - Its now made a good seal and looks and fits just how you'd expect it to (secure!) No, noise is still there - its from the Bosch motor, and perhaps some cable rattle in the frame too.
I've been riding the bike for a while and I can confirm your impression - it's a great bike. Minor issues: The battery cover is junk, I also had to adjust and fix the rubber cover over the latch button. The Acros headset has a block at the bottom at 120°, but there is another crown at 150°, that's a big improvement. Attaching a Monkey Link to the Cub stem was also a bit tricky, the handlebar holder unfortunately grabs the wrong side, where the display is already located and that can't be changed either. I glued the cable for the rear light to the frame, unfortunately there is no internal duct. The Bosch software is still missing a dashboard and a navigation function on the Kiox, the felt 200 Numbers there are really superfluous. Such a huge display just for the speedometer, what a joke. And the holder of the Kiox300 is really too fat, it could be 5 mm thick and lead the cables out at the front, then you could glue it to the top tube with silicone. The LED Remote would need a different rocker so that we can find an edge with the thumb, without looking. Nice work Rob and set Rainer Jeske (Bosch) with questions on fire, when you see him some time ;)
Another great review Rob and a very fair assessment of one of the best value EMTBs currently available. I am a bit biased being on my 4th Cube EMTB - currently riding a 2022 140 TM which for an extra £500 is even better value for money imo. The battery cover on the 2022 bike is better than the 2021 version which had the screw fitting at the top rather than the bottom. This results in a far better seal - on the previous bike crud used to get in round the battery terminals and needed sealing with tape to prevent buildup. . Had to adjust mine very slightly, about half a turn, otherwise fits perfectly. Asked my supplying dealer to fit a 36T main chainring - this threw up an error code on the Bosch Kiox which my LBS was unable to clear. Eventually Bosch sent a replacement motor and reverted to a 34T. Changing the chainring on previous Bosch Gen 4 motors (pre smart system) has never caused an issue, but appears to be a Cube/Bosch issue on current 750 battery Cubes. Bosch customer service excellent, Cube less helpful. Great Maxxis tyres with loads of grip, but after 2 months and 400 miles not a lot if life left in the rear. Will have to replace with a harder compound!
I'm 6 months in on my 140 Race. Similar spec but 29", 140 travel and the older Kiox. Upgraded the fork to a 160 Domain and planning on a Bomber CR with Cane Creek progressive spring out back. All in it'll stand me at around £5k. It's a tad heavy but I love it. I think the Cubes are superb vfm.
I have this bike, ridden it a few times so far, pretty hard. The clunking noise is there but not as loud as this review, maybe that will get worse with time but its pretty soft atm. My battery cover fits nice and snug. I quite like it, it's protective and looks reasonably priced to replace should that ever happen. Acts like a bit of a mud guard too. Overall I love the bike, I like how it looks and how it rides. The carbon frame makes it feel playful up top with all the weight lower down, it just rolls over rocks and roots despite the smaller wheels it's not difficult to keep up with 29ers on the trails. Biggest let down is the UK speed restriction but that can't be helped. It's an incredible machine, can't wait to ride it again.
Great review Rob. And its definately a nice bike for the money. Its kinda in the same bracket as my £4300 Haibike 3.0 (Bosch 625wh) and I have to say, to get a set of Zebs, carbon frame and 750wh battery for an extra £700 isnt bad at all. The only issue I have is that awful battery cover. I know you said you improved it but the one on my 3.0 is super snug and sealed. Other than that I'm with you, this Cube is a great all round emtb. FWIW, I'm actually considering swopping out my 29" front for a 27.5 as the 3.0 is definately less 'snappy' than my old 27.5" Trances.
This bike got me into the sport. Its so great i buyed twice now after the first got stolen. I made 2500km since July 2022. i also have two 750 batteries now.
I agree with everything on the review. Value for money is the best out there. Only downside to me is that I have had cube bikes before and have had problems with frames and bearings.
Thank you for the review Rob, very informative and honest. I think this bike will be my first ebike, especially as it seems to be the only emtb with the Bosch Smart System at a reasonable price currently available. I do hope you purchase one as I'd love to see an upgrade video in the future.
Thanks for the review. Should be getting my 160SL this week I hope, waiting on dispatch email. First MTB, looking forward to getting out onto local trails and getting into mountain biking.
I bought the 2020 version of this bike when it came out and have done almost 1200 miles on it over the last 2 years and absolutely love it. It's a very capable machine in most situations. It cost me 4000 bucks back then new. Not sure if the slight upgrades are worth another grand.
Rob, great review as always. I bought my partner, Joan, the small size predecessor of this bike early in 2020. She loves it which is great. However, as you have pointed out on this new model, the battery cover is poor. Hers is obviously shorter than the 750W version that you have but nonetheless it’s a weak point carried over and worsened by the additional length. I really hate the popper button to detach and attach. It’s very flimsy. I washed her bike (ok, I got it dirty) and even gentle low pressure hosing allows water in along with mud/grit etc. That all said, I’m using it in Slovenia right now and it’s perfect for my needs in the mountains where we are staying. The new version looks like a major improvement, just a pity about the battery cover. One last thing: it’s utterly rattle free, unlike my Trek Rail 9………
Hi Rob, I am considering a cube purchase, in the movie you said that it is a bit too small for you, my question is what height are you and what size of the frame is it? I am asking because I am between two sizes m / l and I think which one to choose
Hi Rob, great review. Between this and the Whyte e160 v2 which is the better bike in your opinion? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, Alex
3:50 - somewhat unfortunate from cube. The thing should probably rather represent an extra frame protection. Little stupid only that below a few parts peek out, which must also be evaluated rather than inner life. Otherwise, however, certainly an effective battery/frame protection.
Looking forward to the long term review, I should be getting my 160 TM this week. I was thinking the 650b wheels would be an advantage while on the technical climbs over 29" since they are smaller, not sure what you experince is?
Cube seem to claw back some money on things you might not pay attention to, like using cheaper bearings, and a cheaper slower charger. I recently spent the weekend eMtb ing with some mates in Scotland. My trek rail came with a fast charger and i was able to charge it back from 1 to 4 bars in a couple of hours. My friend started charging his cube at the same time and could only add 1 bars charge in the same time.
This one comes with a Bosch 4 amp charger (the same as my Trek Rail) and the wheels are Newman Components wheels and hubs. The older version came with a 2 amp charger and unbranded wheels.
...again, like for last Cube video (so you should know and mention that !) : Cube's bike category 4 does not allow wheelies, jumps. Only one wheel allowed to be in the air :):) Maximum drop height is 50 cm, but only rolling over it... would'nt call that a potential enduro bike...
I’ve got that exact bike and had for a couple of months and proper love it it’s my first e bike and had a heckler previous and I’m fixing it hard to choose between them for a trail smashing in Devon very good review for the bike tho well done glad you sorted out the battery cover I think that might of been a Friday build my motor doesn’t that make that clunky sound tho. So something to look at when you hand it back
Hi Rob, which would you choose.. base model cube stereo or base model speshy turbo levo? i have ridden analogue bikes since 1991 and would be interested in your input for my first ebike, as i have narrowed my options to these 2. oh, and you just got a new subscriber. wishing you happy trails..
I've just purchased one and waiting for delivery.. I wish they did it in the grey colour but that's it... I'm wondering what the first upgrades should be?
Battery cover need just adjust the screws inside the frame thts all and ratteling sound is not from engine it is from cables inside frame. Just a few small modifications with some textile tape (same tape that is used in cars to stop ratteling cables in doors etc) and bike is completly silent 😏 I have this bike roughly a year… this bike need better brakes- deore are weak in steep rough enduro descent, ideal xt m8120 with metal pads and fron 220mm rotor also rear shock change for deluxe ultimate with expansion tank and megneg kit 👌🏼 its awesome bike
Great video. I saw that my LBS has the 29er version for approx 5.1k Euros. What do you think about it and how do you compare it to the Canyin Spectral on 7 and 8? cheers mate
Respect Cube. Much more consumer-friendly pricing than those mass brands that charge a fortune due to the name on the downtube(Trek & Giant). Prefer Cube offer a couple Aluminum framed 140 models. A recent carbon Rail ride, proved that as the frame fractured at the seattube/toptube junction, and the headtube had noticeable hairline fractures. My only complaint is that damn battery. Li-Ion batts, are not environmentally friendly. Landfills of them are polluting groundwater in South America & Africa(But who cares about that land?). And I've had a couple after Winter 2021-22, have a meltdown, when recharging. Very expensive to replace, though most that can shell-out a few grand for a bike have no concern. There exists safer...better, conserving batteries, that are lighter in weight. Yet bike companies seem fixated on Li-Ion. When they do offer new batteries, they'll probably rip-us-off, stating we need to also buy a entirely new motor, to complement the battery. Right? Right.
Hi Rob, thanks for the review, regarding the specs the bike looks like it could be exactly what i am looking for...but: What do you think about the "Cube-self-defined" Category 4? A bike with 170/160 travel that is not allowed to do jumps/drops higher than 50cm and "no riding on one wheel neither front or rear, no braking that causes the rear wheel to lift up" seems like a no-go for me.
Hi Martin. I’ve read about this. And there are other bikes that also state similar guidelines (Kenevo / Levo / Rail - all have similar or slightly higher categories!). Personally I didn’t worry too much about this. Usually it’s due to a part (could be a seat post / or a wheel) that pulls the bike category down. I definitely did drops higher than 50cm 😂
@@RobRidesEMTB That is great piece of information. Maybe someone could clarify this with Cube.....It would make us more comfortable as owners. I have the 140 Sl model. Great bike for the money, no problems with the battery cover or excessive rattling noise......
@@RobRidesEMTB thanks for your reply! i don't really worry about the 50cm, very likely cube wants to be on the safe side and say 50cm although they know that maybe 100cm will be ok without any problems. similar to the expiry dates on your milk bottle - they say you should drink it within 3 days but after one week it is still ok...;-) but not even wheelies are allowed? that is a hard restriction which makes me be afraid that the bike is really fragile and the risk of a broken carbon frame with void warranty by the manufacturer due to "abuse" is not a good starting point for relaxed rides...
I bought the 140 SL recently; love it as my first e bike and first FS MTB, however I was also a bit concerned with this categorisation, and I think this is probably the only place I’ve seen this addressed thus far - I think we’re probably right to assume Cube are simply covering themselves (in the same sort of way as e scooter manufacturers often make you sign something to make sure you’re aware of the ‘no riding in public spaces’ law, despite the fact that they probably know everyone will definitely be riding on the roads!)
@@RobRidesEMTB cube biggest mistake was to highlight these "rules" in red on their website. Now everyone starts whining about it while , as you said yourself, other brands have the same "rules" but they hide it somewhere in a dark corner on their websites. People should just ride and enjoy the bikes 😉
Thanks once again for another excellent review. Just wondering, based on your experience with multiple systems, if you believe upgrading to the next model TM 750 with Fox suspension system (and other upgrades) would be worth it. Or would these only represent minor handling improvements not noticed by your average, 51 year old, weekend warrior! 😅
In my opinion the best value bikes there are are definetly by radon. No matter if you're looking at a ebike oder a regular mountainbike i think their the benchmark to compare price and performance
Why would this Cube have an "SL" ("Super Light") designation associated with this bike when it weighs so much? Maybe the "SL" is supposed to mean Super Loud? Good honest review; but, it places this bike at or near the bottom of my e-bike list.
Hi Rob @ Rob rides emtb can you help / advise I really need some help . For the past 12 years Iv had a scott mc20 full suspension full carbon mtb with shim Deore xt , fox suspension, tricked out with carbon upgrade bits n pieces the bike is fantastic for what I use it for - Iv always loved the remote lock out feature . I’m now looking either a Scott strike 940 or a trek rail 5 - however I’m slightly concerned the component specs may be worse than the old bike I have - I do love the twin lock out on the Scott but the trek rail has had many good reviews- I can buy only one but both have an rrp of £4300 currently- can you plz help
where would i stand on the carbon frame if it cracks on a trail would i get a replacemet? or would it be classed as my fault and therefore i get nothing.
As always great value does not mean its cheap, you always have to compare it to whats on the market today and for 5k its hard to find many bikes that offer more for the money. That's still a lot of money to spend on a bike and the whole thing if bikes and parts are getting to expensive is different conversion. Not saying you're but just not the point of the video. I would be interested to hear Robs point of view (idea for a Video maybe) on the matter and how value for money has changed other the last years.
The battery cover is defenitaly a let down, but what about the plastic headset cups? Mine 2021 model has plastic headset cups.....thats Just dangerous! But do you think cube does anything abouth it? No, you have to buy yourself a deacent headset and have it installed or instal it yourself.......
I guess the longer travel compensates for the smaller wheels. I'm a dedicated 29er. Never sure about carbon frames and with budget models there never seems to be a weight advantage, so I went for the Rail 5 with ally frame.
Rail 5 is specced like a Bike that should cost have of this cube, yet it costs more so I don’t understand why an ally frame would make you pay more for worse parts.
Ransom all the way. Have a look at the Loam Wolf review on that bike…..it won their enduro category this year, despite beIng the cheapest bike on test.
@@AB-NZ Neither are available in my size yet. The ransom looks nice, but for the price, I think I'd rather have the 750 battery. I don't do a lot of downhill shredding at my age, but I like to take all day trail rides in the hills.
@@kermitthefrog3685 fair enough. I am 62 and loving the gnarly down hill stuff but also like the longer adventures. Still haven’t got my ebike yet….. ordered but still waiting waiting waiting. Suggest you have a look at the Giant Trance X e+ 1. $9400 here in Mew Zealand, so around US6000. Great spec, and vg price. Full XT and Fox performance suspension. 750 battery, Not sure how available in your part of the world of course. My wife just got one, and we went for that top aluminium model because it came with the bigger battery. And it is more suited for the longer rides and not so steep. Can also add a battery range extender!
Hi Rob. What was the size of the bike. I put a deposit last January on the top model actionteam, for 10,000 Australian it was excellent value, got told two weeks back it has been delayed until early 2023, so I think I'll give in and pay for a turbo levo expert, and hoping it will be the only bike I'll buy.
same here. ordered the ams zero99 last september and after 2 delays, last week I´ve got the news that the production will be no earlier than october week 40😤
A brand new yamaha r7 is 8 grand. I honestly don't understand how this can be classed as value for money. Its absolutely ridiculous the price of mountain bikes.
The 2022 stereo has a new frame. No cracks reported on the web so far. At least not that i know off. The few cracks i read about were all on the 2020/2021 frame.
Great platform, absolutely enjoying mine, however I just really would like if cube would release technical specs like every other bike manufacturer around bolt Torque specs with detailed views, more so around those bloody 6 x T40 plus motor mount bolts. One can only hope....😁 maybe Rob can obtain those Torque figures..... The previous generation battery guard is much better and harder wearing I'd say looking at that, noise wise just think of it as a muscle car an ol Cleveland v8 rattling away, lol
A Hybrid 160 for £4,999 is a tempting proposition indeed. I still have my 2021 Hybrid 140 HPC. I love the design of the 2021 Cube Stereos better than the 2022 Cubes. And since looks are one of the most crucial factors as to whether I decide to buy a bike or not, I will unfortunately not be upgrading to any 2022 Cube Stereo Hybrid. Ever since their launch, the look/design of the 2022 Stereos has failed to get my heart racing. I don't really like the way they look at all (which also is exactly why I'm not a fan of the Specialized Levos). This year I'll be going back to Haibike, which was my choice brand in 2017/2018/2019. I'm already currently waiting for my 2022 AllMtn 10, although the March 2023 delivery estimate is going to really test my patience tolerance 😡But I'll patiently wait. It's an exciting bike, with great looks and great components for the £5,999 asking price.
Any idea what sort of range you can get out this sort of ebike? I know weight, speed and assistance level have a big bearing on things... But could it do 100km on say basic assistance with a 100kg rider., on non hilly terrain? Or could it climb say 1000m and still have 20-30% for back to base riding?
did you deliberately chose to ignore the worst thing about this bike? That headset design is NOT OK. - Reviewers need to get behind this and make an outcry to stop them routing cables through the headset.

Right? Right.
How would you compare this to the Trek Rail 5?
Hi Rob,
thanks for the review, regarding the specs the bike looks like it could be exactly what i am looking for...but: What do you think about the "Cube-self-defined" Category 4?
Hey Rob, just a question about your POV camera, what is it and what is your set up? Absolutely love the look of that! Brilliant video!
I hope we get some soon in Australia 🇦🇺
Still got that bosch rattle Rob, you can hear it through your filming
You can also get headset cups to change angles and mullet.
You could but Cube have routed every Cable and Hose through the Headset
Didn't you receive delivery of a Pole Voima a couple of weeks ago? When will the review of it drop?
The wheels in the details show it’s 27.5” inch wheels but then in the heading that their 29” which is it Also says the frame is 18”M is that true
Have you ridden the action team version Rob. I’m seriously thinking of getting one.
In my opinion the best value bikes there are are definetly by radon. No matter if you're looking at a ebike oder a regular mountainbike i think their the benchmark to compare price and performance
And the Frames are made by Cube 😅
But do you get customer service near you? Cube has shops even in lower emd places around the world...
Love this robbie
I wish I’d have got this instead of my haibike, only 500 quid more , gutted, all though never had a problem with the haibike and Lovin it
How would this compare to the Trek Rail 9 GX , as it’s about 1200 cheaper than the Rail
Why would this Cube have an "SL" ("Super Light") designation associated with this bike when it weighs so much? Maybe the "SL" is supposed to mean Super Loud? Good honest review; but, it places this bike at or near the bottom of my e-bike list.
Lite as in budget.
SL is 'Starting Level' like duhh...:)
Good vid Rob 👍
where would i stand on the carbon frame if it cracks on a trail would i get a replacemet? or would it be classed as my fault and therefore i get nothing.
Saves so much electricity compared to the heat pump. Wish it was a little less noisy.
Rob, any chance you can review the Polygon Mt Bromo N8?
Can you review a scott ransom e ride
The battery cover is defenitaly a let down, but what about the plastic headset cups? Mine 2021 model has plastic headset cups.....thats Just dangerous! But do you think cube does anything abouth it?
No, you have to buy yourself a deacent headset and have it installed or instal it yourself.......
Would you spend £500 more for the canyon spectral on cf8?
Why aren’t you using the fox dropframe pro anymore?
Whats the difference between the race and slx?
Do you have a review on the 22 140 cube?
I guess the longer travel compensates for the smaller wheels. I'm a dedicated 29er. Never sure about carbon frames and with budget models there never seems to be a weight advantage, so I went for the Rail 5 with ally frame.
Rail 5 is specced like a Bike that should cost have of this cube, yet it costs more so I don’t understand why an ally frame would make you pay more for worse parts.
I ordered it on Monday. Looking forward for my investment. In 5000euro couldnt find something better ..
Why are cube using 27.5 wheel on the 160 tm
I have buy this bike in acquamarine colour. Arrived in august. omgggggg
Love it. I'm looking at a scott Ransom or a Stereo 140 TM
Havent tried the ransom yet, love my Stereo 140 AT. Best thing since sliced bread. 700km in 5 Weeks.
That clunking noise would drive me fricken insane. Amazing bike though.
The battery cover on mine doesn't do that.
A brand new yamaha r7 is 8 grand. I honestly don't understand how this can be classed as value for money. Its absolutely ridiculous the price of mountain bikes.
I bet you could sound proof it internally, bit of foam type?
Mmmmmm sponge! 😋
Like a foam type 😂
Which frame is the quietest with bosh motor?
Is there anything wrong with the frame because cube has a issue with the carbon frames cracking
The 2022 stereo has a new frame. No cracks reported on the web so far. At least not that i know off. The few cracks i read about were all on the 2020/2021 frame.
Please review 140 sl
Is there a 29 inch wheel version do you know Rob ?
There is but with 140 travel. I think that this 160 would be good to try mullet on!
@@RobRidesEMTB Yes I agree. Thanks for the reply.
You can get a headset cups yo change head angle
@@59trevski probably quicker and easier to try a 29" on the front (assuming it has the clearance in the fork).
@@RobRidesEMTB the 140 actually has 150mm travel.
Hi Rob another great vid. Would you mind sharing your go pro settings please?
You can buy the frame and motor online for $800US
Cube ebikes do seem like a bargain. Especially the hardtails.
I believe all the bolts have torque values written on them.
@@mallias2683 the suspension pivots yes, I'm talking about the motor mount Torx bolts. Appreciate your response.
Cube have one the nest frames
how long is the included charger need to fully load the empty battery?
I charge my different version of this bike in like 4-6 hours.
@@z33r0now3 i only got a 2 amp charger with my ebikes and it charges for 12 hours
@@chrismade123 yeah, mine got 4 amps
Don’t fall for this fake bullshit
Got my 2023 model for under £3k!
Less than £3000 on sale now!
What happened to the Fulgur?
Am waiting for one in my size!
@@RobRidesEMTB Do you want me to test the smaller one😁
I would think that 60 miles of flattish terrain would be achievable with the 750 battery, perhaps some hills, something like a moorland ride.
Value lol, 5 grand still overpriced for what is a push bike with a electric motor.
5 grand to live with a lot of noise, no tar,
£5k !!!? I like your channel & rate it highly though this is far from good vfm.
Mind you I like my analogue bikes
did you deliberately chose to ignore the worst thing about this bike? That headset design is NOT OK. - Reviewers need to get behind this and make an outcry to stop them routing cables through the headset.
Why, what’s the issue with routing the cables that way please?
@@TheMrPedrose everything. From building it to maintenance .
almost 5000 pounds?? and what about those between 2000-3000??? are those rubbish and not worth buying???
50 odd lbs in weight too 🤬MY🤬LIFE
heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeey this is only a Category 4 bike! you are only allowed to jump 0.5 meters !!!! :D
watched until you mentioned, it's 27 wheels
not even close to being the best bang for the buck. An Orbea Rise H, costly less than that.
