- Join me as I try and fix a Gearbox on my Scag Turf Tiger that got wire tangled around it from an electric fence that was hidden in high grass. Can it be fixed? just jump half way through the video if you done want to watch the full video. Thanks for watching.
Thanks Brother for the video. Getting ready to do mine as it completely locked down. Thankfully this is my first go round on my mower with about 1600 hours on it.
Thanks so much for this. I was struggling on finding a way to get the drive shaft off the gearbox. It’s so filthy I didn’t see a set screw.
I’m glad I could help you out.
For anyone looking, i found bearings at my local auto parts store. PM A-14 (partsmaster brand). This number can be easily crossed to any other manufacturer. The seals they got me are just a smidgen wide and will not fit into the housing....more to come on that.
I did not know there is supposed to be a shield on the input shaft. Ive put around 1500 hrs on mine since i bought it used. I wonder if the original owner removed it, or maybe the early models didnt have them.
When I bought the mower it didn’t have the gear box on it. So it was my fault for not looking at the diagram the first time. The second time I had some hot wire get raped around shaft and it melted the housing. The guard was also destroyed in the process. It would be nice if they had one of the tractor like safety guards made of plastic so things would not get tangled up on the shaft.
I put the shield on due to high grass specifically when backing up the mower it will wrap around the shaft and destroy the seal causing a slow leak. You will smell the gear oil.

Do you have a part number? My service manual does not show this.
check out the new 61v deck they have a box like plate around the gearbox that stands out past the shaft and i believe its compatible with the older mowers
Next time I have one blow I’ll look into that. Thanks for the tip!
My old Scag turf tiger I bought used had ran dry in the gear box and locked up everything when I was mowing. That was a $400 lesson lol
It happens so fast sometimes that you don’t realize while your mowing it’s damaged beyond repair. Mine was brand new and that wire took it out in 30 second. I thought I smoked the belt at first. But it was the seal.
What is the part number for the seals and where did you find them? Thanks, extremely helpful video.
I went to there website Superior Gearbox Company and they sale seal kits for the 1” gearbox shafts . It will be two seals and one plastic block off. Sorry I don’t have the part number. It should be easy to find on the website.
What is the part number on those seals?
I’ll check and post it for you.
I’m also looking for that part number or atleast the thickness.
@@NobhillFunny The Scag part number for the seals is 481651 but I haven’t found a crossover to a cheaper brand yet.
How often would you recommend changing the gear box oil?
it depends on if it’s leaking or not. That is a sealed system so really once a year would probably be fine for commercial use. It only holds around 5 oz of oil. I would refer to the owners manual, and I’m sure it gives you a time interval on when to change it.
