    Firearms offences are taken seriously in Australia. It's not a catch and release system or a Laissez-faire approach like the USA with its "Right to Bear Arms" and 2 mass shootings per day.
    There is a law that says you may carry licensed firearms in your stowed luggage, although you may have to inform the Pilot of the ammunition, however that is different to customs laws, and of course she would need to be a member of an Australian gun club to get a pistol licence and without that owning a pistol is illegal.

    • @smalltime0
      @smalltime0 29 дней назад +10

      You'd also need a special import license depending on what that magazine capacity is.
      Also apparently the ammo she brought with her wasn't the same calibre as the gun... So it's not like she was going to shoot anyone.

    • @aarons6935

      I own two rifles for going hunting on a friends property as you can't hunt on crown land. Owning property or knowing someone with property to use the weapon on is a factor too.

      @Goatcha_M 29 дней назад +5

      @@smalltime0 If it was the wrong calibre that just makes it more sus in my opinion, especially as she claimed it was for self defence.
      And the gold plating? That's doesn't fit with the protection story.
      Anyway, courts sorted it out, but yeah, police might let a young woman go with a warning for pepper spray, but firearms are another story.

    • @smalltime0
      @smalltime0 28 дней назад +3

      @@Goatcha_M Pepper Spray is illegal to bring into Australia, even if it is legal in WA. So if she had gone into Perth with Pepper Spray it would've been a caution and confiscation because it's at least a good faith misunderstanding. But everywhere else it is illegal so she'd have copped a fine.

    • @Goatcha_M
      @Goatcha_M 28 дней назад +2

      @@smalltime0 Possibly a fine yes, but unlikely to get jail time.
      I'm far from an expert, I just know from my time working a Departures security checkpoint that if we found illegal items such as pepper spray or credit card knives we had to inform the police and the person was detained until the police dealt with it.
      As long as there were no other issues they generally got to fly when the police were finished, the items confiscated. I don't know whether fines were levied, outside of my area.
      But if we found a firearm or IED, that would be a different matter entirely.

    At the local Coles the Supervisor ran through the parking lot to return a lady's bankcard to her. After the lady was at the self-checkout, she went to pay but realised that she had left her card at home. She asked the Supervisor if she could leave the items to retrieve her card and return for them, the Supervisor agreed, even at 8:30pm. It was about that time that I walked up to the supervisor with a lost bankcard that I found in one of the aisles. She immediately put two and two together and ran after the lady, catching her just as she about to get into her car. Thought that I'd throw a good story for Coles!

    Ryan was jumping all over the article about the gun being brought to Australia. By just pausing and reading the whole article it said that she knowingly brought it in for protection and also that in recent years she has been using psychedelic drugs, synthetic cannabis and methamphetamine. No way is she getting back into Australia.

    Gout Gout was born in Ipswich QLD, his parents migrated to Aus in 2005. For those of us who don't follow T-&-F, his name hit the news this week with this fantastic run. Not only did he beat Peter Norman's long-standing record; but he's being compared to Usain Bolt. In case you forgot - Peter Norman took Silver in 1968 @ Mexico Olympics & famously joined the "Black Power" protest with Tommie Smith & John Carlos (both were pallbearers @ Norman's funeral). As an Aussie, GG will be able to run in local, national & international heats over the next couple of years and the Commonwealth Games in 2 years (before the next Olympics)

    I don’t love it when Americans call our hundreds and thousands ‘sprinkles’. I hate it even more when younger Australians call them that because I feel our uniquely Australian lexicon is being hijacked by Americanisms.
    We do call teeny tiny mini coloured sugar logs ‘sprinkles’ and the same equivalent shape in chocolate are called ‘chocolate sprinkles’, but hundreds and thousands are not ‘sprinkles’ in Australian vernacular

      In my opinion, it began when the government accepted international ads on television, and no longer dubbed them with Australian accents.
      Teenage girls appear to be the major culprits. There are so many examples.
      It's interesting that many countries, insist on retaining their own vernacular.

      That’s right. Price before tax would be $13.18. Plus $1.32 tax = $14.50.
      We usually don’t even think about “price before tax” because almost all our prices are shown GST inclusive.
      BTW, we don’t pay GST on unprepared food items (or, think, bread & milk). Basically, if it can be used as an ingredient, it’s probably GST free. THAT caused a bit of a fuss because, at first, cold cooked chooks were GST free (for use in casseroles, sandwiches….) but we paid GST on hot ones. I don’t remember how it was resolved, I think we don’t pay it. We definitely do on the chips & coleslaw that come with the chook. It all settled down in the end & we’re fine now, don’t even think about it.

    The invoice makes sense: $14.50 is the total. The gst is a portion of the $14.50. It needs to be written that way so GST can be calculated at the end of the tax year. It’s not additional. It’s a component of the total.
    $14.61 likely refers to the fact they are paying via PayPal or zip money or some outside source that includes a surcharge.

      Australia does not "add" tax at checkout, like USA does. Instead, they show how much was GST (Good & Services Tax).

    14:59 the GST (tax) is within the overall price of each "luxury" product on the recipt. The $7.50 meal has the tax already included in that price. • @michellewest3404

      Generally a criminal deportation only happens when a jail sentence of 10 years or more is given. In her case she would have just be made to leave after her jail term ended. It's a subtle difference between being removed from a country, or deported. If you are deported you have to declare it to any country you try to visit and will pretty much mean you can never travel internationally again. The scary thing in Australia is permanent residents who haven't taken up Australian citizenship can be criminally deported after a long jail term, meaning there has been people (usually British or from New Zealand) who come to Australia as babies or young children and find as an adult they are deported to a country they have never lived in.

    GST (Goods & Services Tax) is charged on most food items and services provided. This is included in the listed price (with the exception of some fresh/unprocessed whole foods which are exempt), however - the total GST amount is listed on the docket so you know what tax you've paid and if applicable, what you can claim back in your tax return [ie a small cafe buying groceries to include in the meals they sell]. As this was from a small coffee shop - the tax invoice / bill, may have been given to the customer at their table & when they went to pay - possibly used a card that incurred a processing fee. As long as the fee was disclosed before the transaction or the order was placed, this is fine.

    In Australia GST (Goods and Services Tax) is included in the price and shown as a separate item - a note that the Total Amount Paid INCLUDES the amount of GST charged. This is for Accounting and Tax purposes.

    The tax on the receipt isn’t to be added to the $14.50, it’s just informing you how much of the $14.50 is Goods & Services Tax. If you’re registered for GST and the receipt is for something you can claim back then it makes life a little easier if it says how much GST you paid when you’re adding them all up to full in your BAS (Business Activity Statement) for the ATO (Australian Tax Office). Yeah, we can do lots of TLAs too.
    The 11¢ increase seems to be just a surcharge for paying on a credit card. I believe it’s totally legal as long as they have a sign up somewhere close to the card machine warning you about it. Quite often you’ll pay a surcharge for using contactless payment, including things like Apple Pay, but won’t pay anything extra for putting your card in the machine and selecting Cheque Account. I think it’s because contactless payments go through the credit card system and the shops all get charged merchants fees for processing credit card payments, but don’t get charged for debit cards that take the money from your everyday bank account.

    AFAIK that cylindrical tree is a species of fig (that doesn’t produce edible fruit.) If they are pruned very regularly since they are young they bush up in this dense way and you can keep pruning them into the initial shape but slowly larger and larger and they keep their shape well.

    The coffee charge at 16:38 of 14.50 id correct. In Aus the GST is included in the 14.50. The 11 cents extra on the bank statement is the bank adding a transaction fee. Not the fault of the cafe.

    Under Australian law, she'll be automatically deported as soon as she's finished serving her sentence. Also, the fact that she made it all the way to Australia with the pistol means that US Border agents - or whatever you call them - let her board the plane with it over in the US. Hmmmmmm...

      US is not responsible for administering the laws of destination countries.
      It's up to passengers to be across the restrictions in their destination countries.
      In the plane, passengers headed for Australia complete a customs declaration. Being untruthful on that declaration is serious business.

    So the GST (Goods and Services Tax) is included in the price, but they still have to tell you how much GST you paid on the receipt, so that's the $1.32. The extra $0.11 is the surcharge from the EFTPOS machine. They're supposed to tell you at the register that there's a surcharge for certain payment types. Used to be that it was up to the merchant to pay that fee, but I've been seeing it passed on to the customer more and more. Should be illegal.

    The tax is included in the purchase price, but by law they have to break down the item price, tax, and total cost on the receipt/invoice (this is for many reasons including if it's a business charge, they need to declare the pre tax)
    The reason the bank statement will be different is bank eftpos charges - the banks charge the retailer to use the eftpos service and they oncharge that to the customer (they will have a notice at the register declaring this). Since this is not to do with the items/service purchased, but to do with the customers' use of the eftpos system, it does not appear on the retailers' till receipt. It will only appear eftpos docket.
    So actually the documents they posted are correct. The till receipt will exclude eftpos charge, and the bank statement will include the eftpos charge, hence the higher amount on the statement.
    The main issue in this case is with the financial institutions, not the retailer, and whether the eftpos charges by them to the retailer are reasonable.

    Funny story. In Queensland the government decided to change the knife laws. My dad is 90 and a farmer, and was stoped by a policeman last week, dad was warning his pocketknife “penknife to you”. Any way dad informed the officer he “was a merchant marine and needed the knife for collateral purposes” and was patted on the back and we went home.

    I have friends who are keen target shooters and have entered competitions in different countries.They use their own weapons, take them from Australia and bring them back after the event. They need a special permit and the weapons must be in a secure, locked case and checked seperately to normal luggage. The purser on the plane is responsible for their transport and stowage during the flight.
    A quick internet search showed me that the USA also requires a special permit with conditions so the story she searched about having a pistol in her suitcase doesn't make sense, unless she ignored what the search found.
