DUDE YOU LEFT ME WITH A HEADACHE..YOUR AMAZING
Ohhhh thank you :) I'll help you with your headache if you want. I have a whole system of study that you can follow.
I'll have ta get a 6 string.I could listen to the end of that all day. Sure is nice ta know what the
Heck your doing. Great Tony!🎸🎹
Beautiful. Your improvisation is impressive. I've always had a similar view at soloing over changes like this. A thing I came up with and like to do is find a note common to each of the changes and change the modes above that note. Over the F-7, Emaj7, A-7, G/B changes for example: Going from Bb mixolydian, to Bb locrian, to B phrygian. This way you can stay in the same area and mess with similar melodic ideas with similar contour. Just an interesting way for me to visualize.
Hi Rashydoxx I'm trying to be more interactive with people who show support. There are lots of technique exercises I teach in the Academy but whatever you do remember that speed comes from good form, posture and patience. You don't practice fast to play fast. You start slow and focus on the execution. I have a set of daily workouts to develop the right and left hand coordination that help you escape the problem of muscle memory so you don't end up playing the same licks and riffs
This is what I've been looking for!! So many beginner videos out there, finally something more advanced. I WILL be watching more of your videos.
Tony Grey is a Boss
This dude is a beast!
Tony thank you so much! I have been super busy with life and school and I was stumbling across RUclips bass players for some reminiscing of my once favorite hobby. Sure enough, this video inspired me to pick up my bass again and I love those chords! Exellent delivery! Liked and subscribed, you are incredibly talented and I look forward to your future videos!
Great stuff. Thank you Tony!
Beautiful solo will check out your courses thanks again, for the lesion
Tony, thank for this resource. You are the man.
Great playing Tony. I'm still enjoying your book and have been shedding this exercise recently. I've been pleasantly surprised by the progress I'm making. That was a beautiful solo at the end - very inspirational for me!
Amazing impro Tony. I love those chords!!! hugs from Mexico City, Amigooou!!
+omarsvolta77 Thanks so much, I'm glad you enjoyed
That's the beauty you will always sound like yourself. These are tools to let go of once you master the concept. The music comes from your ears and your choices. Just don't copy too many licks and find your own twists and turns.
You are great. This summer I'm hitting these lessons hard
Thanks Daniel
I´m just diving into Bass playing again and I´m really lucky that I found your channel. Very focussed and condensed material and a good method of teaching - thnx for that... you have played with Hiromi!!! I REALLY like her music ;-)
***** that´s great - keep on doing good stuff
this is exactly what i was seearching for.
Thanks for the advice! Simple and direct. You have no idea how i would like to be in ANY internet bass academy but my time is really tight right now but be sure ill be there for during my year break (i leave in Peru(southern hemisphere) so that means itll be in january). Thanks Again. And a pleasure to finally exchange some words with a true master.
just gave me all i need to know. awesome vid
+kwaku appiah Thank you
Grilliant man, yes I am opening my ears
+William Rodriguez Thanks
Hi Keith. Well you can look at it in many ways. I'm trying to get you all into the habit of thinking Key Centers. When the chords start moving fast in some progressions you don't really have time to think F Dorian = Ab Lydian. Of course it's the same thing but try thinking of the key you are in. I have a system for learning this stuff and relating to a key is very important. I'll be posting another video soon that will explain this concept. So basically F-7 I'm thinking key of Eb major. Thanks
Hi Manuel it's all about practicing things slowly so you can work on your form. Having a good form slowly helps you play fast. Don't be in such a hurry. With your intention you will get there. join us in the tony grey bass academy there are a lot of courses on technique and fluency exercises. Along with posture and positioning exercises
Thanks Elijah
Tony. You have played with Hiromi - To me, she is FAR beyond anything - musically and technically. You have gained new student Sir. Cheers!
Tony, I could listen to you all day. So dam nice! I'm 57 now and wished I had studied harder in music. I took the easy way out and just became a good funk ,club, bass player. I have everything it takes, just have trouble hearing those tension or playing what over what chord changes. I have the dexterity, just need the rest so I can open up? Where do I start without wasting precious time?
Love it tony. I like your teaching method.
Awesome! What a great Tutorial. Thanks.
hay que dejarse de vaina, este chamaco es un monstruo. Excellente leccion.
+Oscar Delossantos thank you so much
You've opened my eyes & ears... Thank you!!! And I love ....moving...:-))

Congrats on hitting 10,000 subs Tony!
Great teaching love your technique nice clean tanks bro!!!!
Thanks Tony
Great lesson man! Thanks!
Hi, Tony i see you take the time to respond to almost everyone who leaves a comment. That is very admirable!
I've started to learn the bass about 7months now. I'm very impressed with your right hand speed.
What exercises can i use to develop my right hand speed and overall speed in general?
great lesson tony! really informative! i've always had trouble with this
Hi Tony!
Just found this - great great stuff mate - wow!!
Thank you
Great lesson!
Wow! I found a "GEM" thank you for this
Thanks so much
You're very elegant bassist! Greetings!
maravilloso sonido...
Hi Travis. I'm using a sustain pedal. But I prerecord the sustained chord for 5-10 mins.
very very nice bass
Hi Rashydoxx just click the link in the video description. Or the web address is written at the bottom of the video screen. Hope to see you inside the Academy.
Hi Bass Treble yeah you can use this concept on standards for sure. Yeah basically learn the points where the key changes. I have a video on analyzing Jazz Standards on my page. Thanks a lot
I just came across this video and as I was listening to the solo part at the end, I thought that it sounded really good, but I think if you played this exact thing again 10 bpm slower, it will sound cleaner making it sound a lot better.
Would you be interested in doing that some time?
That's cool man, I will definitely watch it!
I remember this from a couple years back and stumbled across it tonight, beautiful changes Tony! Are you playing in the UK this year?
+Wayne Matthews No plans yet for any gigs in the UK, but you never know...
+Tony Grey Bass Academy It would be great to have you over here. I forgot to say great playing too! :)
Thanks!!
Hi John I'm using a lot of TC Electronic stuff. I have some demo videos up.
Maybe this is in one of your other lessons, but here you don't really explain WHY you're "thinking about" the particular scale with that particular chord. That is, what is the relationship between the scale and the chord? Is this relationship discussed in one of your other lessons? Nice job, however, explaining how to transition to the next scale.
Also, it's easier for many of us to follow if you use a 4-string for lessons and get some close-up shots. Just my 2 cents. Thanks.
Hi Tony, what effects are using to get your tone on this clip? Amazing lesson!!
+Craig Sinclair TC Electronic flashback delay
Hi Tony, thanks for your lessons I really find them great !
I see you focus a lot in seeing chord changes as one only key instead of playing around each chord with Arpeggios and stuff (saw that in your jazz standards lesson too).... is there a reason for thinking key rather than chord or it's just a personal preference?
Ps- I love your sound specially on the high notes...how did you work it? are using a particular pedal?
Thanks a lot !
Alongside everything, I'm very impressed on your speed and tone. Very nice.
Do you imply your third finger when you do a faster run, or are you only using your index and middle finger?
Great simple technique that seems like it could open up a whole new way of thinking, I'll start looking into this right away. one small question would be regarding chords where the primary scale isn't coming from a major mode, would you do a similar thing using harmonic and melodic minor as the base instead of their modes, eg over a G7b9b13 you would think C Harmonic minor?
Hi Manuel. Sorry I'm not sure I understand your question. Are you saying is it hard to use this plucking technique with Jaco 16th note lines?
Hi Tony! Great lesson as usually!
I've a question: I'm working on this tipe of exercise but I can't understand the way you immediately connect the chord to its alterations.
I mean, I'm used to think more about positions and not to notes so it's difficult for me to reach the right notes in a linear way like this exercise.
It's a kind of memory study? (for ex: G^ immediately connected to a F# alteration) Or something else?
Thank you, i hope you understand, sorry for English.
Hi Porkyo thanks so much for writing...I can help you. The music is already inside you, there are ways of developing your ear by exposing yourself to new approaches and sounds. Once you can hear all this stuff and learn how to connect what you hear to your instrument you can fly...I'm going to send you a message to your inbox.
Hi Tony, I really enjoy your lesson videos and they are very helpful to me! However, I don't understand the point of thinking the E major and A minor chords and etc as B major scale and G major scale etc. How is it different than just thinking them as E major and A minor scale etc?
+johnbkim93 Thanks for your comment. It’s a great question.
When we play over a Chord Progression that changes key a lot we tend to be boxed in to this vertical way of playing over the individual Chords. I want you to let go of this way of thinking so you can move away from playing the same patterns over and over again, which is a problem we all face.
Learning the Key Centers helps us play through the changes in a linear way so we can train our ears to hear color and tension over the Chord. It’s much easier thinking of the related key as we move through the progression rather than thinking (for example) Lydian to Dorian to Mixolydian etc….
We can simply adjust the notes to keep our lines smooth and linear and learn to hear the notes in relation to the Chord. As we are playing the 1/4 note line through the progression we won't always land on Chord Tones with our lines so we are then able to think and move outside the box.
Don’t get me wrong. The most important thing to understand are the Chord Tones and we need to learn different ways of moving through and between them. This is just a different way of training your ears and muscles to play more melodically through Chord Changes.
Tony Grey Bass Academy Hi Tony, could you detail how to find those Key Centers? The lesson feels incomplete without this to me: I understand the whole thing apart from how you got from Emaj7 to Bmaj (and so on). Thanks a lot! :)
Hey Tony, Great stuff thanks! Is the backing track and material up anywhere on-line anymore?
I wanted to ask why you choose to play these chord changes?...what made you choose these theorywise?
Awesome lesson Tony! Any advice to improv on giant steps? Thanks!
+Emilio Palazzolo I have a whole course on Giant Steps in the Bass Academy
Tony Grey Bass Academy i will check it, thank you!
To give it extra tension because it's a short scale
Hi, can I have the backing track ? Thank You for this useful lesson, this is what I looking for
It looks like the monitors are different sizes, perhaps Dynaudio BM5A on the right and BM6A on the left? If so, what's the reason for that?
If your playing an Ab on an F dorian it would be easier to call an Ab lydian scale right?
Tony hey! Great vid. I have one question about your finger style. . . Probably the only thing stoping me from completely playing with that type of plucking is when Iam playing any jaco stuff or any other 16th note type of player. Did/do you have the same problems?
From your advice i can tell you know your stuff, I want to reach to your level. However, I am new to your channel, yr unique bass posture caught my attention in 'related videos'. As a newcomer to bass (I'm a musician otherwise so i can follow your music vocabulary) how do i begin? Were do i sign up?
Welcome to our planet
Very nice thanks
What affect or pedals are using
+luis celaya TC Electronic flashback delay
Great tone, Tony. Can you tell me about how the tone was produced? (Effects, etc.)
That's right you got it :)
So to use this method on a jazz standard, you must analyze it to find the key changes?
How on earth do you get these melodys....Im using the same modes and stuff, but im so bad at soloing... Anyway the video is great and I love your book :) have it since it was available on amazon :) live long Tony
The ultimate goal of any soloist is to be able to play whatever they can hear in their head. You can work on this by singing what you play, while you play it. You'll find your phrasing sounds more natural, melodic, and less like a whole bunch of scales. Also, listen to and transcribe whatever or whoever you want to sound like. You'll find it'll come out in your playing after a while. Hope this helps duder :)
+Szbazsu89 Thank you so much. The slower you can practice the more comfortable you will become with the concepts. Gradually build the tempo and you will start having control of what you are playing. Just be mindful of your note choices. This lesson is also a great Ear Training exercise. Keep it up :)
Yes! Iam still in a transition stage to completely using this fingering but everytime I practice my studies like teen town, chromatic fantasy, etc I end doing it with normal finger plucking. Any suggestions? and how did you get past that stage? Thanks for the fast response! :D
What pickups are you using? Thank you for this!
they look like the Fodera pickups (I'm guessing because it's a Fodera instrument and if they were like Aguilar pickups then the pickups would say that)
Tony - how do you get that mellow tone on your bass? Been trying to figure it out for awhile.
ok,thanks for the reply :)
Great lesson, What are you using to sustain the chords on your midi keyboard?
Hi Tony! Why is your based stringed that way???
***** great tip, thanks man
Hi Tony, do you still have the documents for these older lessons online?
+Daniel Sing Yeah, they're all stored in our lesson archive. Here's the link:
tonygreybassacademy.com/bass-lessons-archive/
For some reason the archive just redirects me to your home page?
+Daniel Sing Hmmmm... I just followed this link and it took me to the sign up page (in order to access the archive). Try again and let me know what you're getting.
All working! Except the Linear Solo Concepts link does not work - it is just an image. Thanks dude.
+Daniel Sing Great! We have yet to film any free linear solo concept lessons -- but when we do, the link will go live. :)
wow
How do we get the backing track
Great video Tony... How did you develop your speed ?
Hey tony.. thank you for taking the time to respond to me. I'll check the blog out.
+Ivan Reyes thank you
Tony can you send me that backing track
+dguy19 The lesson document and playalong tracks are all here: tonygreybassacademy.com/free-lesson-soloing-through-nonrelated-chord-progressions/
why is your b string on the a string post?
Shankdv8 it’s a fodera thing. There have some 6 strings like that on purpose. The tuner is actually moved over also so the strings don’t touch. So it’s not a goof. It’s what the makers of the bass intended.
💯😲
Breezy, hip changes; very Metheny-esque...
+mrmiles725 Thanks
:) me too
Are you a Geordie?
Time ta get a six string can’t get the notes on four
Tony,I wanna be like you, but,I wanna be like Me to.
This one is a PhD course-
i'll just give up now
