Portlandia's Carrie Brownstein and Fred Armisen recently stopped by the Rolling Stone studio to chat about their early experiences in Portland, the first records they owned as kids and Fred's recollection of the very first time he heard Carrie's old band, Sleater-Kinney. "This guy simply said, 'Do you want to hear the best music ever?'" Armisen recalls. "He put on Call the Doctor and I was like, 'THIS IS THE BEST THING I'VE EVER HEARD, EVER!' I couldn't believe what I was hearing. It was just the greatest."
Fred plays the hell out of those bongos and that's no joke.
Carrie is a rock star but she's all "clark kent" about it.
+Mitzi73 best definition.
Flawless description
what the fuck does THAT mean? She's female for starters! More like Wonderwoman! (crap movie I bet)
chill, lady, chill
Aww, her face when fred started talking about the first time he heard call the doctor.
Can you imagine sitting with these two, with the amount of records that are in that room, for a good hour… FACT: my life would be changed.
Oh, is Portland ever seedy again.
they're so painfully cool
I can't tell if I'm watching a rolling stone video right now. There's just not enough rolling stone logos in the shot.
so, wait, this *wasn't* a spin magazine video?
r u sure thats the right logo
😂😂😂
Album too
I WANT THEM TO BE MY PARENTS
ruclips.net/video/WdEPgB2yizw/видео.html
If they were my parents I’d be so much more sane because I wouldn’t think that I’m crazy anymore
Fred is by all accounts a nightmare human, and I’m guessing Carrie’s no picnic. Both childless and neither wants to be your parents. Great comedy though.
I love the way Carrie dresses. It's so elegant yet casual and pretty. She is one schnazzy dresser . . . .
You said this 6 years ago, and I was just thinking the same thing in 2020. Her style is so classic, her clothes and shoes always looks feminine, chic and expensive.
I want to know where she finds all of those killer shirts!!
10 year old comment and it's still true. i think it's just embedded in her essence
Look at that adorable expression on her face when he tells her her music was the BEST THING EVER. That's such a sincere look in her face and it shows how touched she was by his compliment. I can tell it made her happy. Carrie is a sweetheart!
They are so fucking awesome.
Carrie has braces, Fred looks like he has a cold... it's like watching two high-schoolers talk to each other.
I love how geeky Fred gets about Sleater-Kinney because if I were in the same room as Carrie I wouldn't be able to shut up about it either.
"I feel like it's a good thing that we're having a hard time recognizing a crack pipe." HAHAAHAHAHA!!!!!
Fred embarrassing Carrie at the end with praise is so adorable
These guys really show that you can still be cool and hip and young in your 40s.
So much part-gay man/woman sexual tension/platonic friendship.
+gibberconfirm platonic tension
well carrie's bisexual and fred is straight so I'm a liiittle confused by what you mean.
missknisely I thought she was a lesbian?
Carrie's reaction at 5:25 is the best ever.
almost made me cry
I love them both they are so great together.
Carrie looks great! Sleater-Kinney are an amazing band. i just can't believe the jam 'all mod cons' was a really important album for her as it was for me too. Fucking love-d that album. Maybe over-played it ...Nup Its KILLER NO FILLER. Brit punk t its finest nd most passionate and possibly under-rated? Subjective anyway. You really need to be in a certain mood...anyway Mr. Clean the jam and I cannot BELIEVE this pathetc cheap Jam best of CD I got with ONE track the opening track which is 1.20 or some shit minutes long stupid CDs never bothered with vinyl and don't like the show portlandia and i only watched this to stare at carrie for a while yummy :-)
I like how it's basically just them having a conversation.
Such a crush on Carrie.
Brazil?? Fred just became even more amazing.
I would marry her right now..
Chris Craft Of course you would, ass. We all would. Regardless of gender, anyone would want her in their life forever.
Got her autograph...so she’s mine.
"He had a bowl cut...kind of a long bowl cut" I was dying after that line!
I love their voices and use of words. I bet they could talk about paint peeling and it would keep e entertained.
They both are so awesomely deadpan, that I can imagine if you were friends with them it would be difficult to tell whether or not they are joking!!
Patiently waiting for them to get married...
Seriously. They're so in love.
Glad I'm not the only one
You do realize that Carrie is a lesbian... Right?
Kace TheMagician lol no she’s not. she’s bisexual
How are they able to get those records to stand up so straight?? They have to be props.
Oh, and Fred and Carrie are great per usual.
Vinyl is the best. I'm only 19 but vinyl is the way to go. Its such a different experience. Only thing that sucks is that all new records that come out are SO damn expensive; at least compared to used ones. (for obvious reasons I guess...but 30 dollars? THANKS My Bloody Valentine. )
this should've been two hours long
Carrie is so ultra-Zen-controlled.
the bisexual energy in this video...unmatched
carrie always has the most amazing shoes whenever i see her in interviews
the founder of macheesmo mouse had no intention of offering authentic mexican food. Did you notice that the rice was brown only? It was healthy, basic, mostly vegetarian food with delicious condiments. I used to buy their salsa and "boss" sauce by the carton and use it at home. There were tortillas and beans, but it was really American food with a bit of Mexican influence. It was great - until the owner died when his private plane crashed on the way to seattle, killing Tiger and all 4 of his kids. The restaurants went downhill and eventually died. Anyway, Carrie, I'm a bit surprised that you were unable to pick up on the innovation - "macheesmo mouse" - a little bit mexican, a bit cute, and definitely healthy, hearty chow.
Thanks for breaking down the local lore for us.
swift kick to the scrotum to kill that little anecdote, damn...
had to be seattle right :/ god
Call The Doctor is my favorite album by SK and I agree with him it's the best thing I've ever heard in my life.
Clash's London Calling lp behind Fred!
I love Fred talking about S-K because I know exactly what that feeling is like. When I heard the song 'Start Together' I suddenly thought 'holy crap this is the best band ever.'
My very first album was Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen. I'm glad I don't have to be ashamed about my first. Second album was 52nd Street by Billy Joel (less proud of that but was huge at the time).
God I wish Pet Sounds was there, even though i love houses of the holy :D
I would totally watch them just shoot the shit for like 2 hours.
My mom love Macheezmo mouse growing up in portland. We would go there all the time and I hated it. Fucking disgusting but portland history for sure. I always wanted go to the organ grinder. That was my shit as a young kid in Portland
When Portlandia came out, it changed everything. Plus Ive always had a crush on Carrie. Cute, weird, and nerdy musician chick. =)
The sexual tension is so strong lol
just found this in 2024. definitely. Needs to be updated.
we have a special jail for people who pretend to play the bongos... no trial, no nothing
The younger generation is also being ripped off sound-quality wise. A paper thin record from even the 80s sounds richer than a lot of 180g $30+ new records. Sad - still, vinyl is a fuller experience I agree. :)
Carrie, Corin and Janet. Every music project they have ever been involved in is absolutely amazing. Call the Doctor is probably the best SK album.
I really wish more people would have shared music with me in my life. Such a gift. :)
Hey. I loved Macheesmo Mouse. No, it wasn't authentic Mexican food, but it was good.
Well Portland is seedy again so, that's interesting
no disrespect but I lived in Portland just recently for a year and the place is over rated & one can get easily depressed not only because of the weather but even the environment pretentious with little substance & undefined ,like a "dyslexic" society(no offense to dyslexics)without real substantial accomplishements.
considering they're almost cracking up half the time, i'm not sure how much of this to take seriously, and how much is an extension of a portlandia sketch.
When I was young I didn't use to buy vinyl records. I bought some but my thing was really sharing cassette tapes - some with songs from proper records, others with songs recorded from radio shows with announcers saying shit before the end of the song.
The artists I used to listen to at that time? A really varied bunch: Michael Jackson, the Smiths, Iron Maiden, hits from the Police, Genesis (Mama was so huge), Billie Ocean, Yes (the pop songs), and a Brazilian rocker named Raul Seixas.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
I ate mocheezmo mouse all the time it was down the street.
sargent pepper
I don't think he's joking about Beyoncé? I think he's serious! Hahahahahaha! That's soooooo funny!
Why?
why would he be joking about beyonce, she puts on a great live show
Yeah yeah, just make The Toni and Candace Show, already.
Omg, Machismo Mouse. I haven't thought about that place in ages...
I wish they were my best friends
beyonce's single ladies on SNL was good. it was one episode I watched I was like "this is good"
"Houses of the Holy" by Led Zeppelin
The Led Zep Album behind Carrie - I've got a shirt with that printed on it. Not that anyone cares. Just sayin. :) Love them!
Carrie....I dunno, she's just hawt.
Ironic 360p. So cool.
That was pretty much exactly how I felt the first time I heard Call The Doctor. Back in '96 or '97. Stuck with SK til the very end.
They really are hipsters, haha
She totally wants him. You just know it.
She's gay
@@johntao6822 shes literally not.. shes bisexual and im pretty sure they're dating.
Cacao
I wish this was an hour long
6 people do crack. xD
super poppy LOL
"i got one too" haha
there is some odd awkwardness in this
I tots 'member 'cheesmo. Never did eat there- I don't think, anyways. Anyhoo...
damn.
carrie is beautival!
i loved machimo mouse!
Carrie, trying to look modest towards the end there. Stop it Carrie. You're kind of a big deal. Accept it.
Do they? I didn't hear any jokes made about liberals. Can you point out where in the video they do?
My crush on Carrie SKYROCKETED once I saw her play guitar. GOOD LAWD.
What is the record behind Carrie?
does fred live in portland too?
i want more of this interview!
My first album I owned was Moody Blues “ Days of Future Past”
yikes
I love The Jam.
Bet they find it easy to recognize a crack pipe these days....
THE JAM!!!
Carrie and Fred are interviewed by really smart, funny people! (Carrie thinks Fred is funny and cute. She tolerates his silliness just like so many women do men's need to perform.) These two are so appealing, funny, and authentic in their brilliant appreciation of human absurdity.
TOO C U T E!¡! ❣️
Musicians and actors, comedians
Macheesmo Mouse was disgusting
Totally blew my mind, but I have been meaning to check more Sleater Kinney out...had no idea Carrie was in that band. =O I'm going to listen to them some more...
I feel like I'm watching Martin and Akroid and two wild and crazy guys. They walked funny.
I know this will be a majorally lame comment but are these two in love and/or at least dating? If not they need to be asap... they are so cute together
They have sole handedly brought millions and millions of dollars to all the curious tourism they have brought to the City of Roses! It's that curious tourism dollar get's ya everytime!
How can you ever tell if he is being serious or not? He remarked about Beyonce's performance, not her music in general. He said he liked the all girl band and 2 drummer's.
Thanks, you two, for illuminating how extremely cooling I am not and will never be! Sheeesh! :)
Carrie is one of the most gorgeous gals my eyes have ever had the fortune of gazing upon. Something about her truly says to me... "Awesome". Awesome, in it's entirety. Forever young, Carrie Brownstein.
Yes, this happens to me. I stare at her for hours while she sleeps. When she shows signs of waking up I get out so I don't blow it for the next night.
